Online course promo: Tease your wool – invite air before carding
In this short lecture you will learn about the benefits of teasing your wool before carding. Teasing the wool will be less straining for your body and the fibers, make the carding easier and leave less waste. The rolags you card with teased wool will be more even and the yarn of higher quality. In the lecture I will also show you a few different ways to tease your wool - with your hands, with a hand card, with a flicker and with mini combs.

New online course! In this short lecture I talk about the Twist Model and what happens between spun and unspun and the point right in between. I also talk about what we can do with this section of the yarn to have less strain on the body, less strain on the fiber, to get a more evenly spun yarn and to be able to listen to the wool. With a theoretical framework and practical examples with differ...
Rehackling flax
Переглядів 3 тис.2 роки тому
In this video I show you how I rehackle flax that has been stored for a long time. These stricks of flax have been stored since probably the 1940's, but any flax that I don't spin directly after the original hackling I rehackle. Like any other fiber preparation, hackling is fresh produce. The separation of fibers will sink back together with time and make the spinning more challenging. The fres...

    Hi! Your ply on the fly Turkish spindle video got my trying it and starting to learn this and while I’m spinning I’m finding more of your videos and I so so so appreciate you making and posting these. I’m fostering a toddler (my granddaughter who is three and so all my wheels are locked safely away and I’ve taken a huge re interest in my spindles that I have never really gotten much use of. I’m learning to truly love these and I also have quite a few and plying as I go seems much more fun as well as productive! I have 3 grown daughters and I know two for sure might catch on from my experiences! Just wanted to say thank you a million times over!

    So neat! Have a renewed interest in the Turkish spindle spinning and hope very much to learn this ply on the fly technique. My grandmother that gave me my love for all textile arts was Austria-Hungarian before coming to America. ❤ I never thought to ask her who taught her to crochet. It’s very interesting that you allow the spindle to hang, spin and balance itself. So fascinating and I’m sure your yarn is very lovely as is your sweater! Thanks for sharing this video!

    • @josefinwaltin
      @josefinwaltin 5 місяців тому

      @@paulettegaleener6754 Thank you! The hanging and balancing is possible with a freshly spun single. If the single has been on the spindle for a while, the energy of the yarn would have settled and not trustworthy.

    I'd love to have a go on one of these, I'm *so* bad at long draw currently and this would force me! I can't stop looking at the clock reel though - I have a very similar one but mine has three gears, two of 10 teeth each, the second of which drops a hammer after a complete rotation, so as it makes a 1.5m skein, we've started referring to 150m of yarn as a Bonk. The last gear counts in 16s for some reason but the hammer is missing and it's a bit out of alignment with the others because there were missing teeth. Probably my favourite loppis find, until the surprisingly-good battered wheel.

    • @RandomAFP
      @RandomAFP 6 місяців тому

      ...well I was meant to be spinning some random white top which the label fell off into random lace-weight yarn to use for a natural dye session with a friend, but this inspired me so what I've been doing for the last hour or so is carding scraps into rather rubbish rolags and practicing my long draw :D I'm not actually as bad at it as I thought!

    • @josefinwaltin

    • @josefinwaltin
      @josefinwaltin 6 місяців тому

      Usually I pull out some fiber from the distaff and roll it into a leader against my thigh and then make a half-hitch or two around the belly of the spindle.

      The rims are made of bent wood and joined with a ribbon. The Japanese, Chinese and Indian wheels were way earlier than the medieval European great wheels and inspired the making of them.
