Tennessee Valley Railroad No 710 Diesel and Turntable
A fun trip with our 9 year old grandson to the Tennessee Valley Railroad and museum in Chattanooga, TN. A short video highlighting the Diesel No 710 and Turntable.
General Motors Electro-Motive Division built the 710 in 1950 for the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis (NC&St.L) Railway. The 710 was built as a GP7, developing 1,500 horsepower.
The NC&St.L 710 later became Louisville and Nashville (L&N) 478. The 478 was sold to Amtrak in 1978, being again renumbered 772, to be used in maintenance of way service. Amtrak had the locomotive converted to a GP9, increasing its horsepower to 1,750.
TVRM would later acquire the locomotive, completing its restoration in 2004. TVRM also returned the locomotive to its original 1950s appearance, including paint scheme and number. Today, the 710 can be found in operation on many of the museum’s trains.

I learned a trick for HO corrugated steel from MarklinOfSweeden. You have to start with one sheet of scale corrugated plastic and make a mold for your appropriate size of corrugated steel. You then add a thick coat of Elmer's glue and wait for it to dry. After that you just peel off the Elmer's glue layer and presto, you have a sheet of corrugated steel to paint as you would the plastic sheet. Buying individual sheets of corrugated plastic sheets gets expensive. Thanks for the link to the squeezer as now I've got to drop $10.00 for the squeezer as I'm beginning to model in O scale for my Lionel 027 and plan to construct an 027 layout in the near future. I'm gonna start on the Silver City Tool Shed model in the next week or so, and will have to get the squeezer so I can add the relief to the corrugated steel. Just wish they made a finer one for HO scale. Thanks for all your tips and tricks as I really enjoy watching your videos and am learning a lot about card stock modeling. It takes some talent to turn a flat piece of card stock into a 3D building. Cheers from eastern TN

I'm having trouble editing my posts as UA-cam sometimes won't take the edits you've made to the post unless you restart the program. I'm wondering if you use the Elmer's glue full strength or water it a bit. I have an old plastic oiler tube that used to contain smoke juice for the model engine that's been empty for years. Maybe I could fill it with Elmer's and use it since it has a nice needle on it or maybe I could even use a syringe I've got after getting out of the hospital with open heart surgery in 2018. The syringe also has a nice needle to use applying glue. Cheers - eastern TN

I'm beginning to see how layering (a carry over from Photoshop you previously displayed) works on the physical model itself. Two layers of trim and windows with the second layering of boards added to the side will allow the window and trim pieces to stick out (in relief) one layer once the individual boards are applied. Gonna have to get my head in gear when I do a model. Thanks for the tips and tricks. I'll be using those techniques as I begin my next build. Cheers from eastern TN

I've got some Avery card stock #3200 for making greeting cards with an inkjet printer. I cannot find what the weight of the card stock is as it is not listed on the box anywhere. It just says "heavy weight" card stock. Any ideas? I've got several hundred of different card stock pages of the same weight, light green, grey, light yellow, light blue and brown I used for making some WWII boxes for different things. I'm thinking I could print on regular paper (even have some sea foam bond paper--very lightweight) I could print and glue to the card stock. Think that would work? If I remember correctly that's what I did a few years ago when I tackled the first card stock project -- the Taylor's General store in HO scale. Cheers from eastern TN

I downloaded the Haunted House in O scale from Clever Models. I will eventually tackle this after I get the Silver City one completed. I had a difficult time with printing page 6 of the Silver City. My printer wouldn't print the very bottom of the page so I turned the page upside down and tried to print it, but no go. I would always print right side up. I had decided to scrap this project, but I finally figured out how to work around this problem. I decided that I would model that door in wood & and use the measurements of the other door on the page as a reference. I am surprised I thought of this work around and will start the project in a few days when my steel O/HO/N scale ruler arrives along with all the glue I ordered from Yankee Dabbler in New Jersey. By the way, Yankee Dabbler has all the other on line RR model stores beat in prices as well as shipping. I also ordered some HO scale windows & a flat car from Tichy Train Group to try my hand at model building from a plastic kit. I've seen a video about building this model and it has great detail for a $10.50 kit. Cheers from eastern TN

So far I've made two cardstock models for the HO railroad. They ended up just as tedious to construct as any other model. I had to learn all about relief with windows and doors as well as for corners etc. I did the same general store as you have done except mine is in HO scale. I also added the front porch with support posts for the porch roof. I did a lot of relief work with the windows and doors & made individual shingles for the roof. Cheers from an old retired guy in eastern TN

Rusty, many thanks for sharing your experiences... we share the same roller-coaster of emotions! LOL. I applaud your bravery in tackling HO scale with cardstock, not an easy task. While I enjoy practicing / improving my manual cutting skills with an #11 blade, the past 6 months I've been learning to use a cutting machine. I have both a used Cameo 1 and a new Cameo 4. Amazingly it does a fantastic job even with window details where the mullins are .0625" (1/16") wide. If your on FaceBook, I've started a group that you are welcome to join and post comments and your photos to share your experiences! Here's the link: facebook.com/groups/cardstockmodeling. I have a question, and I apologize if you have already explained this. Do you print your own parts on your own printer using the various kinds of paper you show? Or do you purchase the proper weight of paper and give it to a printing shop and have them print the parts on your paper? Or can you have a printer supply the proper weight of paper and have them do all the printing? I ask because I don't have access to a printer. Thank you for any assistance you can offer. You're a great teacher!

Hi Cam, many thanks for your kind words and watching the videos! I'm learning ever day I cardstock... If you are new to this, I suggest using a 65lb cardstock material. Astrobrights Cardstock, 8.5" x 11", 65 lb./176 Gsm, Bright White, 80 Sheets - from Walmart or Amazon runs about $5 for the bundle. This weight has a clean fold and easier to cut than 90 Lb. If you have this done by a printshop, make sure the use 65 lb weight, "premium finish", and acid & lignin free - which maintains the color overtime. May I ask what cardstock model/kit you want to build? All the best, Sam

Nice! I actually own a similar tool that I purchased several years ago specifically to corrugate some card stock. I was building a model of the Saturn-V rocket from scratch and the skin is corrugated, a trick the engineers used to add strength to the metal skin. The effort paid dividends. It looked so very real with the corrugated relief of the skin. What I had to do was run some card stock thru the crimper and then flatten it so I could measure the actual distance from crimp to crimp. I had to do that because on the actual rocket, the corrugations alternate color from white to black. Once I had that data I went back to my cad program and created the skin in strips with the colors properly alternating and then after printing, ran it thru the crimper. It really gave a depth of realism that I'd never seen before on a cardstock model. I've only used it for that one project so now you've inspired me, I'm going to have to dig it out of the tool kit and give it a go again. I think I'll get that free model you pointed out and use it to reintroduce myself to corrugated cardstock. Nice episode! Thanks.

I love it when you explain tips and tricks when you're doing your modeling. It's the little things that make a difference between a cardboard model and a cardstock beauty. I really enjoy what you do and show. I've been waiting for you to come back and am so glad you did. Until next time - Chuck

Chuck, thanks for being patient with my absence... Each time when composing these I'm always struggling with how much detailed to show versus the length of the video! Always glad for your feedback, Sam
