Episode 23 - Johann Fanzoj Express Rifle -- Double Rifle, .500/465 Nitro Express

The gun I want to cover today is a rifle that is very similar to the rifle we covered in Episode 4: a big bore double rifle specifically designed for big and dangerous game. There are, however, several differences and one is major enough to include this rifle in this series in addition to the rifle of Episode 4. That rifle was a boxlock rifle and while very well made, was produced from modern C...

    Thank you so much for doing these videos. I have always loved bolt action rifles but when I watch you review these magnificent works of functional art and historical treasures it makes me realize just how little I know about what makes a rifle truly special. Thanks so much for sharing your great knowledge and appreciation, these videos are treasures to me since I probably won't ever be able to own or hunt with one. I have my CZ 550 American though! It's my own little 6.5x55SE treasure ;-) And good job Virginia! My daughter likes your hair color!

    I own 2 pre 64 Winchesters, that were left to me by my Dad, after he passed...a 270 and a 375 H+H magnum, both mfg in 1950 (according to Winchester collectors assn)...taken several deer with the 270, nothing yet with the 375...both of these guns mean the world to me, both very accurate!!

      Good question: Off the top of my head, I would say it is in the quality of the finish, the engraving pattern and quality, and the wood checkering and quality. But, the guy who can answer this question better than me is Ken Pendleton, a Beretta expert. He is in Tennessee and his phone number is 931-308-2304. You can tell him I recommended you call him for this.

    What's a 22 hornet worth?

    • @rogerrule8195
      @rogerrule8195 2 місяці тому

      Hi Mike, the question is too general. The value depends on which style, barrel length, and most of all, condition. I would suggest you go to GunsInternational.com and sort by Winchester pre-64 Model 70 and refine your search with caliber 22Hornet. You'll get an idea of what sellers are asking for.

    When you mentioned the extreme recoil fron NE cartridges vs 100 or so 12 guage shotgun shells, i assume its because the NE cartridges are burning much faster powders and accelerate those large heavy bullets much quicker than your average 12g shotgun can. Always been facinated with the double rifle concept in large heavy hitting cartridges. The ultimate in "stopping power". Here in Europe the 9.3mm cartridge is popular for shooting running boar, sometimes in a double rifle configuration.

    • @rogerrule8195
      @rogerrule8195 2 місяці тому

      I have a lot of respect for the 9.3 cartridges and have owned 9.3x74r doubles, 9.3x64 Brenneke Mauser, and a 360N0.2 John Wilkes double that George Caswell of Champlin Arms claims is the best of the 9.3 cartridges.

    This was a great video with one exception. The post 64 model 70 saved winchester from bankruptcy. The model 70 xtr was as ĥandsome as any pre 64 and were better then the model 700 rem I love the pre 64 winchester 70 ditto the post 64,and the early 90 s super grade that I have in 7 mag .my best rifle far and away is my 1st year production model 54 in 30 government 06.while the 70 had several upgrades over the 54,my 54 beats any of the 4 pre64 model 70s I have better than my 1903.better than my custom fn Mauser My lowly 54 handles like a light shotgun and will shoot a 165 gr Hornady interlock 5 shot group into a ragged hole at 100 yds.i don't shoot this rifle at targets anymore only game ,and I don't let anyone touch it. All winchesters are good some great rifles

You'll find them, that's how I found mine.

    I had been under the mistaken impression that the Browning BLR was a unique lever action design. It has a rack & pinion mechanism, a detachable box magazine, and the bolt lugs engage with the rear of the barrel. However, it was introduced in 1967 or 1968. Clearly the BLR took its inspiration from the Sako Finnwolf. I am not knocking the BLR in any way. I own one in .308 Winchester, and it is an excellent rifle. Looking at the parts diagrams, the BLR mechanism appears to have fewer parts and be more robust. The underside of the bolt itself is the rack, and there is a single pinion. That said, I would dearly love to find a Sako Finnwolf in good operating condition.

    Given the choice between the 450NE and the 470NE I’d take the 450 any day. Only when the 45 calibre get banned in the British empire did the invented of the 470NE come up with the his replacement and he didn’t patent the round so it became very popular. It’s essentially the same as the 450NE but because it’s a .475 calibre and not a .458 calibre it has lower sectional density. The first shot on an elephant or Cape buffalo will be fine but when it turns and you have to try and get solids through to it’s vitals from the rear end you have much less penetration with the 470.

    • @rogerrule8195
      @rogerrule8195 7 місяців тому

      For 450 I would rather have a 450 Rigby, but to each his own. Thank you for your comment.

    • @chrisc2671
      @chrisc2671 7 місяців тому

      @@rogerrule8195 yeah, but that’s a bolt action cartridge. I also like the 450 Rigby rimless and think it’s an extremely versatile cartridge. But for a double rifle I think the 450NE is a better choice than the 470NE. I’m certainly not an expert. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.

      Great analogy! ...and besides the great makers, if you get into the great engravers, such as Stefano Pedretti, Manrico Torcoli, Mario Terzi, Claude Cremini, Aldo Rizzini, and many others... then you really get a feeling that the great Italian painters and sculptor's are back! Bertuzzi liked to think they were the Ferrari of Italian guns. Some guns have now been named Michelangelo and Leonardo -- so your analogy is appropo, thank you for your comment.

A month ago at age 57 I walked into a local gun store and hanging on the wall looking like the Holy Grail was a pristine 1961 MCA Carbine in 30/06 with single trigger complete with original factory sling. Thank you so much for producing such an excellent review of this amazing double rifle. I have recently read "Hunter" by J.A. Hunter and "White Hunters" by Brian Herne and am currently reading Lt. Col Peterson's "The Man-Eaters of Tsavo". So I've been dreaming of the lost golden age of African hunting and the ubiquitous double rifles so loved and relied upon by almost all of the great white hunters a lot lately. This rifle looks like it would be equally comfortable in the richest museum or in the sweaty hands of a grizzled PH stalking the brush with a dangerous animal laying in ambush ready to launch a final, desperate attack. I'm going to also watch episode 4 which you referred to and I have really been enjoying your bolt gun presentations immensely as well. I currently own, handload for and hunt with a CZ 550 American in 6.5x55 SE so I have come to appreciate a good bolt gun, although I'm greatly humbled by your tremendous knowledge and genuine love for these most special firearms. You, sir, are a great credit to both our sport and our passion. I wish I could find the right words to convey my profound thanks for this video series. And thanks to Virginia, too, for helping make the videos so engaging!

      Wow, Steven, that is really a wonderful comment -- I'm just sorry it took me so long to reply. Your kudos are greatly appreciated. Since I did this video, because of your specific interest, I have picked up a John Wilkes 470 NE and a Holland & Holland sidelock 500-465. I love these big guns and the great nostalgic age they reflect. Have you read Death in the Tall Grass by Peter Capstick... if not, you will love it!

    • @stevenwagner9205
      @stevenwagner9205 7 місяців тому

      Congratulations on your recent acquisitions! The heaviest recoiling rifle I have ever fired was a .458 Win Mag (CZ 550 Safari). That was a lot of power! That 470 NE sounds sweet, seems like that is a real classic. In reply to your inquiry, Capstick's "Death In The Long Grass" was actually the first book I ever read on African hunting. I liked how he broke it down into sections on the Big 5 and then covered the other dangerous beasts that didn't make the cut like hippos, crocs, etc. I seem to remember a gruesome picture in that book of a man who had been trampled by an African Bull Elephant. It looked like a mud puddle with a boot in the middle of it. Quite sobering! Since my last comment I read Roosevelt's "African Game Trails" and that was very interesting. If I recall correctly he carried the 500-450 and referred to it as his "Big Stick". It sounds like you got an even "Bigger Stick" with the 500-465! As Teddy declared, "You will go far." Your videos are awesome and you are a credit to true American culture sir! I have a 13 yr old daughter and I want to be sure she has an appreciation for all these fine things in life. Your tireless, generous and extensive work will ensure that our children will have excellent guidance in the pursuit of developing a deep and lasting appreciation of functional luxury. Words do not exist to express my gratitude to you.

      @@AustrianJager That sounds like a very interesting bullet, I have used light bullets in my Mannlicher and they shoot well but they are a single shot proposition due to feeding issues,some of my brands of brass I have to load the shell in the bolt first and put it in the receiver because of the controlled feed and the extractor not able to hop over the extraction notch,I now just stick with my 160gn round nose Hornaday bullets and the carbine feeds like butter.The bore in my gun is like new but I have headspace issues but I cured that by expanding the neck to .277 and sizing it back down to .264 but leaving just a bit of the neck oversize to where the bolt just closes and no more headspace problems and the fired brass is a mirror image of my chamber and brass life is forever instead of two or three loading's.

      @@rogerrule8195 Might be the case BUT as I live in New Zealand, the savings are not so much. I also get sick and tired of the defective Amazon algorithm which repeatedly directs me to sellers who will not ship internationally🙂. Keep up the good work.

    Looking for info on a early, what I believe to be, 1923/24 Abercrombie & Fitch #137- 30-06. Supposedly owned by one of the "4 great white hunters" whom assisted in the production of the 1931 MGM movie - Trader Horn. It does possess many indicators of a Griffin and/or G&H. Existing G&H records apparently begin in 1930, so no help there. If you could steer me to a resource ? Would love to share pics in order to learn more. Thank you in advance for your time.

      Jb, there was a magazine called Gun Facts, that had much information on early Griffin & Howe's, Sedgeley's, Hoffman's and other custom rifles between the wars. I would start with trying to find copies of those. They usually had beautiful covers.

      They are, and I really didn't emphasize the third lock enough -- found on Arrizabalagas and rarely found on other shotguns.

    Nice video Roger but 18.4 is the barrel inside diameter in millimeter’s. I used to shoot an Mt6 trap and now shoot an Mx8 trap and a High Tech sporting clays gun, you can’t do better than Perazzi!

    I have a 1957 Marlin 336 with the G&H side mount. The quality was impeccable. These were the types of side mounts hunters wanted on their hunting rifles.

      I agree whole-heartedly. These mounting systems are still available today, but they are costly to install correctly and since first made in 1928, they are a little more cumbersome than the latest Rechnagel and the older claw-mount systems that are as expensive to install. All three are excellent mounting systems that retain zero when removed and remounted (if installed correctly.)
