Confusing Pattern Work Returning from First Practice Area Solo
Переглядів 1,9 тис.7 років тому
NOTE: This video is from 2013 when I was a student pilot returning to the airport after my first out-of-the pattern solo. I had it sitting around and figured I'd toss it up so others can think about what they would do in a similar situation. I'm flying Sportstar 7SL on a left pattern for runway 19L at John Wayne Airport. A couple of weeks ago, I completed two series of solo landings while stayi...

This is a video of my short sunset flight from Santa Monica (SMO) back to John Wayne (SNA). I, too, am training at Sunrise Aviation, and I’m flying my long XC flight this weekend KSNA KSBA KCMA KSNA. What was the TS220 route that Clearance-Delivery was referring to?

    • @jandras1
      @jandras1 Рік тому

      Hi Les. I'm not sure what he meant with the TS prefix in "TS220," but I knew then he was wondering why I didn't want a "Mesa Departure" which is a 220 heading over Costa Mesa, to the coast, rather than an Orange Departure which would involve a climbing right turn to intercept a 330 heading back toward Orange. I think this is because most pilots would tend to fly to Santa Barbara by flying up the coast and then using one of the transitions through the LAX bravo, rather than departing on a 330 heading and flying completely around it like I did. The four VFR departures are mentioned here: (1) El Toro Depature (heading 080) (2) Newport Departure (heading 150) (3) Mesa Departure (heading 220) (4) Orange Departure (heading 340, was 330). www.ocair.com/business/general-aviation/pilot-information/pilot-guide/ Have fun on your flight! If you ever find out what "TS" means, let me know! Joe

      @@LesGainous Hi Les. I don't think Sunrise ever lets its students traverse the bravo. I assume it's an insurance thing. And, no luck on the video for the other legs. The battery life on my video camera back then was barely enough to get to SBA.

    Well done! I live in Irvine and I'm trying to get my license, so it's nice to see a realistic representation of southern california air space. Does ATC sound more clear with the headphones on? I know they talk fast, but it seems like they're near impossible to hear through these youtube videos. Like the sound of the plane mutes the volume from them

    • @jandras1
      @jandras1 3 роки тому

      Hi Dajilus. That's pretty much what they sound like. However, it's usually a very scripted dance so, once familiar, you can interpret what they are saying because you already have some expectation of the questions they will ask or instructions they will give. I have an old cheat-sheet "script" I made showing both sides of the conversation when on the ground and in the air I'd be happy to share. It's tied to operations at John Wayne. I practiced both sides of the conversation when driving to and from work to embed it in my head to some degree. If you're interested, let me know. Joe

    How is that Cross Country you only went 80 miles to Ramona

    • @jandras1
      @jandras1 3 роки тому

      Hi Joey - 80? I'm not sure where that number comes from. Under FAR 61.1(4)(i), cross-country time is logged during a flight from one airport to another without regard to the distance between them, but under FAR 61.1(4)(ii), you can only meet your experience requirement for solo cross-country flights (5 hours) with cross-country flights > 50 nm. This flight counted for solo cross-country experience because the straight-line distance between KSNA and KRNM is 70 nm. Under FAR 61.109(2)(iii), the required experience also includes a long solo cross-country flight that is > 150 nm total distance with 3 full-stop landings and with at least one segment being > 50 nm. Thus, the flights from John Wayne to Ramona and back were logged as cross-country flights, but not as the long flight.

      I'm not sure to exactly where in the video your referring, but aviation times are given in "zulu" time, aka Greenwich Mean Time or GMT, so that they don't vary from location to location and cause confusion. And, in California, we are either GMT-7 or GMT-8 depending on the time of year. The difference is 7 hours in the summer during "Daylight Saving Time." In other words, 2020z translates to 1320 local, i.e. 1:20 PM.

    What do you mean unmonitored?

    • @jandras1
      @jandras1 5 років тому

      Hi Sagar, I assume you're asking about the tower controller's end-of-night announcement that starts at 6:05, where she says, "the ILS runway 26R is operating unmonitored." If you look on the official chart supplement (link below), you'll see that the tower at Chino airport (KCNO) is operated only part-time. It's near the middle, next to "TOWER", you can see that the tower only operates from 1500z to 0500z. Converting to CA time, that's from 7am local to 10pm local. And, if you look down near the bottom, it says "Unmonitored when ATCT closed," where ATCT evidently means Air Traffic Control Tower. Basically, the controller was telling everybody listening that she's going home and will no longer be monitoring (i.e. watching and controlling) the runways, including the one with an instrument landing system (ILS). In other words, she's telling you that you are on your own. Link: aeronav.faa.gov/afd/05dec2019/sw_110_05DEC2019.pdf
