Ballad For Bing - Dave Plews Trumpet with NYJO - National Youth Jazz Orchestra 1977.
Ballad For Bing - Composed by Dave Lindup.
Trumpet soloist - Dave Plews Age 19
Trumpets; Dave Plews, Stuart Brooks, Gavin Mallett, Guy Barker, Simon Taylor, Chris Smith. Trombones; Rick Taylor, Pete Beachill, Mike Innes, Vince Sullivan, Martin Koch, Kenny Hamilton. Saxes; Jamie Talbot, Chris Hunter, Dave Bishop, Phil Todd, Mike Read, Bob McKay. Flute; Andy Findon. Piano; Mike Hatchard. Guitar; Ray Harborne. Bass; Phil Cranham. Drums; Graham Ward. Percussion; Dave Early.
In July 1977 the National Youth Jazz orchestra of Great Britain had the honour of becoming the first British big band ever to visit the Soviet Union. The subsequent double LP “To Russia With Jazz” documented this visit with many of the tracks recorded live at the Russia Concert Hall, Moscow. The remaining tracks including this one were recorded at Regents Park Studios, St Johns Wood London. Dave would have been just 19 years old at time of recording. This is quite a blow for trumpet with long sustained phrases, only a few bars rest and ends on a super high note finish.
Dave Plews was born and grew up in Plymouth, Devon. A fellow Plymothian I first heard of Dave when I joined the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra in 1981. Dave had played 1st trumpet in the orchestra during the mid-late 70’s and was a bit of a legend! He went on to play lead trumpet with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra 1977-80 and subsequently toured & recorded with many of the top artists of the day including Eurythmics, Dire Straits, Elvis Costello, Howard Jones, Shakatak, Pete Townshend & Mike Westbrook. I was fortunate enough to play on some shows and gigs with Dave in the 90’s and remember them all with much fondness. Dave tragically took his own life in November 2000 at the age of 42. Miss you Dave. X

I went to their first ever rehearsal as a mix of BBC northern dance orchestra and Granada band members, then followed them each week as they increased their book.
Trekffic😮
I bought the band I go and listen to a copy of the arrangement and they played it last night. Wonderful!
A chaque fois que j'écoute ça, cela me donne envie de danser et je crois encore que je peux faire comme eux ... depuis le temps je l'saurais
Check out Baritonist GLENN KOSTUR @1:00:25 soloing on the old “Morgan’s Organ” tune from early 60’s - an Ernie Wilkins blues chart, renamed “Glenn’s Den” here in 1990. Orig: Si!Si! MF 1962 MF Birdland Dream Band… “Let’s hear it for the trumpet player that raised all that hell, let’s hear it for Roger Ingram!”
Alert! @41:01, at the end of the 1st set, there’s a 10 min. interview with Maynard. Listening now…
YES!!!! Maynard!!! …Love the opening BLUE BIRDLAND (Theme). Excellent sound quality. Listening to the rest now…THANK YOU for posting this.
Love it!
Ah it’s the generation game so it’s a challenge. Nice. How fun.
So Harry didn't sing Danny Boy at this event? Anyone know? Thanks and cheers.
@@triplejazzmusicisall1883 Harry sang Danny Boy in the 2nd half.
@@mikethomas7038 Thank you for your time and kindness. I appreicate it. Cheers
Besides this there was another London concert that was screened on television in some countries. Some of the footage was used in the music video of Recipe of Love. There is some footage of it on youtube about 15 minutes worth. The set list is very different from this and the Dallas concerts. In the Dallas concert he wears the reddish jacket and in the London one he wears a more typical tux like arrangement. In the London concert he sings the beautiful song Drifting. It is from a different concert than when this played on radio. I recorded it when I was about 20 (34 years ago) from a World channel SBS and still have never seen it anywhere else.
That’s show biz
If I didn’t know better I would swear the drummer on the Royal Variety Clip is my old a dear friend, Geoff Myers?
Hey Mike, where is Dream is a wish from end of album?
Not a clue Andy! Hadn’t realized it was missing! Not sure how that happened…Whoops 😬
@@mikethomas7038 Hi is Andy Prior still performing ? Would love to see him live again I had the pleasure of meeting him and the night owls when they accompanied me at Blackpool tower ballroom I sang “Begin the Beguine and Andy liked the arrangement which was a Johnny Mathis arrangement . He was wonderful with me and gave me a fabulous experience I will never forget please will you tell him when you are in touch thank you 🙏 Gayle Trevone

@KennyWheeler has inspired me since I was way younger! I am now re-listening- and I am blown away!!! Kenny Wheeler’ trumpet and music!!
I love this
Jay Kay has a magnificent mother! And, surely Mommy is proud of his son!
The first time I saw Harry Connick jr playing in Europe /London ❤
Big band music is on the rise again. Huge viewing figures on UA-cam for the young musicians from Saint Andreu in Barcelona, German TV promoting the great Thilo Wolf Big band. There's hope for melodic music and multi instrumentation yet.
unfortunately my Dad Norman brown sadly passed on January 23rd 2024. 💔
Trumpet Olympics.
Roger and Dan. Damn!!!!!
That is Kenny?
Heartfelt thanks for this- you've saved me a lot of time- I've got a tape recording of this that's the only one of my old tapes not to have survived the years in my parents' attic (and the only one I really wanted), so it was a revelation to find it and takes me back. Thanks!
Holy moly. Great playing!
thank you!

This is a great big band, great arrangements and one hell of a ballad singer, they deserved much more popular success, but alas the tyranny of 'playlists' put the lid ont. that.
Thank you Mike Thomas you da man!!!! Best high note Trumpeter in the world Maynard Ferguson!!! 😆
Blimey. just stumbled across this. I recorded the concert on the radio back in 91 and then years later edited it down to MP3 tracks that i have listened too and shared with friends. I never knew all the track names that were played so you filled in the blanks. I uploaded my tracks to the RadioCircle website audio files collection last year because they didn't have it. If someone has the full concert as an MP3 file would love it. I edited out the chat during the recording and when i did transfer to MP3 and lost the old C120 tape and the original MP3 files. I was worried i would run out of space on the tape. It was played on a Wednesday evening on the 22nd of May. Happy to share my version too if someone thinks their copy could be better. Thanks for doing it!!
Hi Paul, I'd love to hear a clearer version of the 2nd half of this concert. I recorded the 1st half from radio 1 but the 2nd half FM signal was rubbish!
@@mikethomas7038 not a massive user of youtube so missed this. How do i get in contact with you Mike? i can add them to a one drive folder and can share it with you.
Woah! Great fine ST!
Can't believe I've found this! My friend Helen and I were the ones who shouted out "Harry, I love you!" at the appropriate moment during "All I need is the girl" and he said "I sent them all that money to say that and they sat them back there!" What memories 30+ years later! Thank you!
Haha I must have listened to you shouting that hundreds of times over last 20 years!!! 😂
Thanks for sharing.
Great guy and fab band! His live stage craft is class. ❤
🎶 💗
Wooww what amazing voice!!! ❤
When hearing this in 1991 thought he played a wonderful 'Danny Boy'. Any ideas?
RIP Nigel Hailwood 😢

Granada Plus Repeated Sounds Like A Story From 1996-1997 And Was Shown In The Morning
Whoa I've been looking for this for years. I remember when they first aired this I recorded it on VHS (I was 11) and I remembered the song years later so I was listening to the original go a while and randomly remembered and it and found out the blue Peter version is actually on UA-cam
A few bars in, my dad, Alec Coburn, on guitar.
Great playing brother...still miss you loads.
OMG I haven't heard this in 35 years! We used to play this at Bournemouth Youth Jazz Orchestra and I loved it. I was like 4th trumpet and enjoyed every minute of Tracey, Dave or Simon who were just idols to me playing this just like the track here. Great trip down memory lane!! Thanks Mike.
I was playing trumpet back at that time....Somethings got to Give is just awesome!!!!
Hi Guys I recorded this too and have it digitised on MP3 feel free to contact for it
Hi Gary I’d love to hear that mp3 if possible? Do you have the whole show? (My act 2 is quite rough as the radio signal went!) lol
Hi Of course I am writing asking and hoping you might consider sending me a copy Would it email as an mp3 file? I am happy to pay of course for all costs plus time taken to do this for me. However, I never like to make assumptions that someone should do me favours, so I would respect you if you'd rather not or are too busy. I have some Harry Connick items including a book that I would happily exchange if you were interested. I think I have other stuff too I can dig for and get back to you. I know I have an Australian tour book from circa Oh My Nola and possibly some rare audio. Whatever you decide have a wonderful week. As another Harry fan I respect your excellent taste in music.
Hey guys I have an even better recording of the whole show all on MP3 if you are interested let me know!
Oooh! Sounds amazing Gary! My part 1 is good but part 2 suffers with radio frequency trauma! :-(
@@mikethomas7038 Just realised from your Part 1 that I missed the first 4 songs but got the rest. I'll see if I can get your email from this otherwise send it across.
I would love a copy
