    Barrel life is incorrect. We would put more than 3000 rounds through one in a day.

      @NTATchannelNickTaylor thanks for sharing your experience. Which version would you be using? My comparison was based on the old M2 (non-HB) but always happy to be educated. Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoyed the video. ~Mike

      @@airlandmarineHeavy barreled, each Howitzer section is issued two M2's with 2 barrels each. One goes on the Howitzer (Track Commander position) and the other on the Ammunition Support Vehicle (ATC position). We would chew up ammo at a pretty good rate when we would be downrange. IIRC the max rate of fire is somewhere around 800 to 850 rounds per minute but to keep from overheating it (and less frequent barrel swaps) we tried to cut that in half.

    • @airlandmarine
      @airlandmarine 2 дні тому

      Very interesting. Thanks again for sharing your insights. It’s always good to get different perspectives on these things. It’s funny you mention limiting fire to stop them overheating. I have heard stories of them “running away” when they overheat.

  • @pauldewees7571

    Now, wait a minute. M2 has a timing gear adjusted by the gunner!!! Rate of fire is gunners choice!!!

      @airlandmarine 3 дні тому

      @pauldewees7571 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Are you saying the M2 can offer the same maximum rate of fire as a feed boosted M3M / GAU-21? I’m always happy to be educated. 👍🏻

    • @pauldewees7571
      @pauldewees7571 3 дні тому

      @airlandmarine honestly, probably not. But going the other way gives you amazing accuracy at ridiculous range. Like 2k yds. Literally why we have the Barrett light 50.

    • @airlandmarine
      @airlandmarine 3 дні тому

      @pauldewees7571 I also the evolution of such weapons (or lack of it) very interesting. As you know, over the years the 12.7 mm has still found its way in to many anti materiel rifles and heavy machine guns. Given that the DShK heavy machine gun can trace its birth back to 1938 I guess you could say that it shared a similar path to that of the BMG. The difference is that unlike the BMG, the DShK is now pretty much at the end of its life. That said, I understand that it is still seeing some action in Ukraine against their Russian aggressors.

    I wouldn't say the Abrams is the best tank but is pretty powerful, though it has its pros and cons, it has some of the best turret armor and has great mobility, but the hull armor doesn't get the same treatment, the upper glacis plate is only 51mm thick and sure rounds may ricochet, but they would just bounce straight into the turret ring, penetrating it. The side armor is only 30mm thick with 5mm spaced plates, however the first couple plates are better protected with the hull being protected by 60mm composite armor. The engine is also very, very expensive and consumes a lot of fuel, the engine consumes just as much fuel when the tank is idling as it does when the tank is driving. I also have an issue with the multi fuel argument because the U.S Military only uses diesel for most of its vehicles so why would the Abrams use a different fuel especially when most of the Army's vehicles don't use gas turbine engines. But in my opinion, there is no best tank in the world, it's whatever suits your military tactics or doctrine.

    • @airlandmarine
      @airlandmarine 13 днів тому

      @WhereDaBeansAt, thanks for sharing your insights. As you say, the Abrams (as with all tanks) has its pros and cons. I was always surprised about the choice made to fit it with a gas turbine engine, but I can see the benefit of the multi-fuel option if you were stretched beyond your supply lines and needed to take advantage of alternative local fuel sources. As you say, in reality that never happens as the Abrams has never really seen such as use case, but I wonder if this could feature with the Abrams use in Ukraine? I also agree that there is probably no best tank in the world. As I said in one of my earlier comments, as with any "tool" for any job, there is no one option that fits all requirements. Overall the Abrams is still an impressive tank and a formidable weapon in the right hands. Thanks for watching @WhereDaBeansAt. Feel free to share with anyone else that may enjoy it. My aim is to produce quality content that is "technically correct" rather than using guess work etc. It's still early days for my channel but getting there slowly but surely. If you like anything Abrams related you may also enjoy my long form video on the M1150 Assault Breacher (Abrams DNA). 50$ Drone is enough to disable this tank

      @airlandmarine 15 днів тому

      @Bananajoezz Yes, maybe. However, the time for using drones as a cheap way of taking out tanks by dropping grenades through open hatches (in Ukraine) has probably past as everyone is now aware of this tactic. It was certainly effective for a period of time and I'm sure it was rather embarrassing for any tank crews that survived such and attack. Thanks for watching. @mohican6158 Given the choice, if I was going in to battle I would take the Abrams over a $50 drone. Sure, someone could get lucky with the drone but the odd's would not be in their favour.

      @a_lost_alligator9119 What do you think of the Abrams? As I said in one of my earlier comments, sure the Abrams has some shortcomings but overall it is still an impressive tank and a formidable weapon in the right hands. Thanks for watching. @repodog6191 Yes, some form of CATOBAR system would be better than nothing. I hope you enjoyed the video. Don't forget to subscribe for more videos to come. ~Mike

      The problem is these ships, unlike the old Ark, Eagle etc dont run on steam engines so would have to be EMALS which is still to this day having problems

    David Hobbs, curator of FAA Museum and author, says the cost to retrofit QE with CATOBAR is as much as the cost of the QE as built. He is enthusiastic about RN having a carrier strike capability not since 1972, but furious that short sighted finances resulted in locking these ships to the ski jump. The retrofitting of HMS Victorious overhangs any attempt to retrofit to this degree. The USS Midway 1966-70 modernization cost 67% of USS JFK being built at the same time. Midway served another 22 years but rolled heavily and couldn’t conduct air operations in heavy seas while JFK served 39 years as a full capability CV and CVA. The QE has the potential of Victorious and Midway if retrofitted.

      @tonymanero5544 Thanks for your comment. It appears evermore likely that the QE-class will be forever bound by the decisions made before, and during their construction. The only positives are that with the rapid evolution of lighter unmanned systems the requirement for these vessels to have a CATOBAR system capable of supporting full size aircraft such as the F-35C, may soon be a thing of the past. I hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, remember to subscribe for more videos to come. ~Mike 👍
