This is another video on the king cleveland. I've lost a lot as I didn't play for 6 years but you can hear how fat these horns are. They play as well as the super 20s are a lot cheaper and only the table keys are little more awkward

This is a Cleveland tenor from the fifties or early sixties. Forgive how warbly I sound on it. The nerve damage I suffer from is worse today than most days. These are very special horns that can be purchased for reasonable money.

I used to run a goodyear store and was a mechanic. I found this car and the guy swore it had a cracked block, head, or main seal. As the car was parked in tall grass I could not see. I bought the car and had it towed and in 2 minutes knew that this sensor went bad. There are a lot of videos and blogs where people are very insulting and say this doesn't happen,it does. Fortunately the switch tur...

Checkout the artists he recommended just heard Peacemaker by Clarence Clemens. Wow.
Beautifully played was looking at this sax, not knowing much about the types and you made it sound wonderful. Thank you.
Beautiful clarinet work Ted. Bravo!
I hope that this guy is still alive
Hello teacher, maybe you can help me and give your opinion. Which tenor sax is better, this king or an aristocrat IV buescher? I would appreciate your opinion.
I have a the face tenor saxophone I love It It Is Antoine courtois and i play with a Berg Larsen .......very very good
I should have done a separate video on just the face model horns. They are the best model beaugnier ever made abd sadly you see very few of them
WEll played!! Love the King's. Never heard a Clevland till this video. Wish you better health friend.
They r known for water pumps to
Nice!
thanks
@@tedkutzer10 what brand of clarinet is that?
@@ricaard It's a d serial number evette clarinet. D serial number evettes and k serial number evette schaeffer k serial numbers above k 6500 are the same bore and basically the same clarinet as a buffet r 13. You can buy them for a song and they play great
@@tedkutzer10 👌🏾
@@tedkutzer10 it has a wonderful sound.
Hello! I own a 1950 Beaugnier made in Mantes France, the perfect 260 model I believe. Serial #47×× and came with the 2nd neck you played so beautifully. I don't have any other history for the horn except a NYPD officer owned it since 2002 and played it for police officer decoration parades and concerts. I believe it is the nicest tenor I have ever played. It looks sort of Keilwerthesque.
Man, I hate spellcheck. The leak is in the valley under the intake manifold. It leaks a quart about every 200 miles.
You sound very informative. I have been contracted to fix an oil leak on a 1995 Buick Century with a 3100 V6. The lease is somewhere in the valley area until the intake. Any ideas? It leaks a guard about every 200 miles.
Thank you for the video! Have you tried a later 615? An 80's one for example. And if so, what did you think was the biggest difference?
Absolutely after watching the camera view of the front grill this emblem and car is an Oldsmobile Ciera not a Buick. Good video either way.
great sax . i have that in a 1950 model. cork grease on the pinky table corks makes for much improvement .Super light lower stack action.. i would love a super 20 too who wouldn't .
I’m supposed to get mine from EBay in a couple of days. It’s a 1920’s King Soprano Saxophone.... hope it sounds just as good as yours....
Thank you. It is wonderfully music. I wish you good health. Lyudmila
Thank you. It is wonderfully music. lyudmila
Hello. Thanks.
move away from the camera!
I recently bought a 1994 Cutlass from a retired older woman. Has 83k beautiful condition. Drove absolutely great last night, and I wake today and start it and it chattering and tapping under the valve case? Any idea or info would be greatly appreciated as I paid 1800$ for it a week ago
I have a tenor sax" Beaugnier Paris" stencil for "Sales Distributor Gretsch" Brooklyn - Chicago Made Made in France" serial 6464 the best I could come up with a date for this instrument is late 50's through mid 60's it is in near mint condition, no evidence of ever being played, I would call it museum quality near mint I am not a instrument expert but I'm sure this has a very high value due to its age, condition, manufacturer and rarity. can you provide recommended sales avenues or more info
Thanks for the informative video. I know it was published a long time ago, but I just bought a Beaugnier/Vito tenor that is similar but has the bell keys on the left side. I repadded it and it is a real player. I just love the tone and am still getting used to the left hand pinky table. I'm just trying to learn more about these great horns. Is there a specific year that they moved the bell keys from one side to the other?
Thank you so much for making this video. I have the same car same problem and paid 250 for mine too haha but thank you this video was informative and has helped soooo much!
Hi a late post but I have an opportunity to buy a special perfect tenor. Is this similar to the one you are playing in your video Thanks Steve
which mouthpiece/reed/ligature combo are you using during this session? I have Gretch Commander, and I would love to get it sounding as good as you sound with yours! This video has inspired me to get the horn rebuilt/restored!
Love your playing.
Hi, really informative video, have you played the Atlantic Fabrication Artistique tenor saxophone by any chance, and do you have any information on that particular horn?
Thank you.I really closed my shop 11 years ago due to disability. I haven't been to a NAMM show in forever and I'm sorry I'm not familiar with that model. I recently purchased a soprano, alto, and tenor of Chinese manufacturer by 2 different vendors. The tenor I have and was shocked in a good way what you got. I plan on playing them for months to see if their are any quality issues long term. I'm also at the beginning of a 60k remodel of my home so it will be a while before I post again. I hope to become much more active here and review mouthpieces, as well as discuss all things saxophone including some of the things my teachers taught for people that can't afford lessons and would like to learn themselves. It could be as long as a year or much sooner but I look forward to being more active and broader in scope on upcoming videos.
jazzmanted Atlantic Fabrication Artistique is a tenor made by Beaugnier from the 30's I believe. I hope you get well soon, and look forward to your future video productions.
I managed to get one of these for free! I love it! It was in my aunts storage room and amazing playing very beautiful Tone!
They are great tenors. I wish I had this horn now. This was recorded a year after my gallbladder surgery and my recovery with being able to walk again. I don't do the horn justice. Unoverhauled you can get one for a few hundred. Invest another 600 in an overhaul and you'll have a great tenor. BTW if you replace the pads with a conn style flat reso instead of the button resonators from the factory and they sound like a super 20. Ironically if you look up a zephyr series 5 horn the keying is identical and they go for 1600-2000 dollars. Their is a difference, the bell keys are on the pant leg side on this one and the zephyr has them on the other side. Glad you found a find for free
jazzmanted Im glad you recovered! Thank you for the advise! Im already looking at a tech in Houston to rebuild it. And you sound really nice btw.
I like your playing Ted. I assume this horn has been sold? If so, do you have any other horns for sale? Thanks!
I bought a super 20 after I acquired this as they sound so nice so this is gone now. I paid the house off on the 12th of march and my energy has been spent fixing it as I plan on relocating in the next year. I own many tenors but only 2 that I own would I sell. One is a 61 yamaha tenor fully overhauled for 1800.00 and a b@s silver plated tenor overhauled for 1100. The other tenors I'm either going to keep or will finish working on in the next 24 months. Currently Iam playing only the super 20 and a noblet model 79 tenor. If you need advice let me know your budget and I'll be happy to let you know the best buys in that price range
By the way, you have nothing to apologize, if I played half of that would be happy
Hi, I just bought one of those and really in an excellent sax. In this video mouthpiece you use or which one do you recommend me to get the best sound to this saxo in particular? Thank you
Thank you. I recorded this shortly after having my gallbladder removed. I have much more sound and control back now. The mouthpiece that I used in this video was a buescher true tone mouthpiece I think with a number 4 on it. To advise you without knowing how long that you have been playing and what you're using now it's hard to say. Berg Larsen's sound great on these. King Curtis the famous R&B tenor player played a super 20 with a Berg. I'm currently playing on a 10m fan Rubousto 8 star on everything I play, but it's expensive and it may play darker than you care for. I found a Noblet model 79 tenor and am playing it almost excluseively. The super 20 and other tenors that I own I rarely play now.
is this a Noblet or Duke and which is the better horn Thanks
The model to buy in Tenor is the model 79 noblet and they also made a few marked vito. I have one but they are rare. If you google model 79 noblet tenor pics you'll see the horn. The Duke models are newer and are not as good as the 79 or as it is referred to the face model. The model 79 has a neck octave pip that is similar to the teakettle octave on the balanced action. In fact the entire sax resembles a balanced action with a few minor differences. It has gold springs and a huge sound between a selmer and a King. Think an SML sound. Leo Strasser of SML was a minority partner in beaugnier as well. The tables are much better than the Duke model and that big neck octave gives it a very appealing upper range. They can be had for little more than a student model but should sell forr11-15k like the balanced actionteakettle models do. These play better and their are less of them. They're just not known and they are great.
and you have one for sale? how do I contact you?
jazzmanted@yahoo.com
Do you have any Beaugnier for sale now?
I have 2 face model tenors which is the one I refer to as looking like it was fished out of a swamp. The Noblet one is completely overhauled and I have about a months worth of play time on the overhaul. It's respectable but won't win any beauty contests for 800 dollars. I also have a relaquered vito version that needs about 60 dollars worth of work of the same model. The face brace on the bell has been replaced with a mark 6 brace. It also won't win any beauty contests for 500.00 These play like balanced action tenors with the teapot octave on the neck and if it said Selmer it would be an 11 - 14 thousand dollar horn. I wouldn't sell either except that I found a new near one of this model and I don't need 2 spares. Let me know if you're interested. I don't know where you can find any pro horn for this money. IMHO these are the nicest horns ever built.
Thanks I better wait I have horns just sitting now but some day
where are you located I'm in Florida
I'm in Charlottee, NC
I just purchased a 615, looking forward its arrival. You play wonderfully, and I hope you are managing your illness, and are still playing.
Congrats on paying your house off! 🏠
I love the Beaugnier / Vito saxophones. They have more flexibility than the Mark-VI. Perfect intonation. But I have only tried baritones and a tenor sax. I guess the alto saxophone will be similar.
The altos are similar but have offset stacks. At least the face model does. It's also a great sax. The altos sound like a mark6
Ok. Thank You!
I need a neck for one of these ,I'm hoping someone has one ? thoughts brad 404 394 3356
Nice, Bro!
I'm glad to see you're back able to play again, as per your recent videos. I love old King horns, and enjoyed hearing your King soprano again. I have a King curved soprano and King Saxello. Be blessed, and continue in good health. Robert Story
+Rob Story Ford Thanks Rob. I had serious health issues even back then. I spent nearly 6 years bedbound and had a 22 year history of gallbladder disease among other issues until they finally removed it. This allowed the pancreas to heal enough to allow me to walk and play some music again. I spent this winter overhauling 6 pro tenors that I had from when I closed my shop due to health. I am now spending stupid money finding a muthpiece orpieces that work for me. The nerve damage and arthritis in the jaw has caused me to have to make many adjustments. I also have hypothyroidism and it is not being treated correctly. It is nice to not be in constant tachycardia and to have regained enough to play some. Hopefully I'll post a few more videos in the future. I too love kings. I have a super 20 tenor and a cleveland 615 model tenor as well. King and martin were the only manufacturers to use soldered toneholes and king used silver soldered brazed rather than the low temp tin on the martin horns. That and a few other things make them play like nothing else ever built. No one makes a sax of this quality today unfortunately. Thanks for the kind words
Sir, you sound awesome! No need to apologize. Thanks for the video, and man these horns sound sweet. I am definitely glad to own one.
+George Widener Thank you Goerge but I know how I used to play. When I recorded this I had very fine tremors that were full body. I hope to recover enough to play again. I spent 6 years in a wheelchair so I'm thrilled to be able to do even this. Along with everything else I had a 22 year history of gallbladder disease. Finally it was removed last year . I couldn't play at all prior to that. We'll see how much I can improve. I haven't had a syncopal event in a year now and that's a first in nearly a decade so it's encouraging. The best of the clevelands are the ones that say Cleveland on them and have this table. These are the better table than the earlier models and have the silver soldered toneholes. When they started making them in the Eastlake plant they changed to a drawn tonehole like everyone else except Martin. It's not a coincidence that these are the 2 most powerful saxophones ever made. Once you get to 5000 dollars all flutes have silver soldered toneholes. In almost everything else where old people speak about the good old days they are wrong as technology has enhanced most things. Saxophones are one of the few things that older in many ways is better. What is coming out of china and taiwan today sounds lousy, and doesn't hold up well . Of course it's a different story with the French Selmers but they are 9000 dollars new now. Even those do not have a bottom end as nice as the vintage stuff.
real nice but some parts squeaked i don't know maybe just me to hear it
+chriss1152 I suffer from fairly serious neurodegenerative disease. I am bothered by the intonation and the unpredictable vibrato as every nerve in my body has been affected. I recorded these when I closed my shop due to disability. The more than 100,000 dollars I lost in liquidating the shop and instruments was what really hurt. I am finally playing again after 6 years in a wheelchair. My 4th surgery for a bad gallbladder that I had for 22 years has finally had me walking and playing some again. I have repurchased some vintage stuff that I plan on dyeing with and will post videos of those. Whether I ever recover enough to play for a living again which I did full time for 6 years and part time for 30 years remains to be seen. Four of those full time years were in the United States Air Force. I was fortunate enough in my life to have worked with many recording artists and renowned jazz musicians. I hope to start posting new stuff and hope to help aspiring wind and jazz musicians/
ohhh man man i,m so sorry i'm just now learning the saxophone and it takes a trained ear to here things that others can't or don,t i,m sorry for my bad comment i study by listening my saxophone needs to be worked on and i don't have the money at this time because i,m not working i,m trying to get my disability my self bad knees so once again i., sorry
+chriss1152 I'm not faulting you Chriss. There are many comments that I have not replied to as I have not had thr physical energy to reply to. FYI I've performed wjith Diannah Ross, Lou Rawls, the classical pianist Leon Bates on who was featured on entertainment tonight and is a representative for steinway pianos on you tube as well as on entertainment tonight. Lou Rawls, and many other world renown musicians in pop music, jazz, and classical music in my lifetime. My hopes are to recover enough to make my own statement. BTW, in addittion to playing professionally for years I was fortunate enough to teach privately and half of my students went on to perform in district band and I had students that -played in state band on 3 of the 5 instruments that I taught. I did not place students on oboe or bassoon as the children I taught went on to study those instruments with charlotte symphony members . I was referred to beginners on those instruments as the symphony musicians respected the fundamentals that I instilled on those musicians. I hope to recover enough to both perform and teach again. Make no mistake, I can supply the names of music department heads at major universities as well as booking agents that know me that book class9ical, jazz, and pop acts that are universally known. Having had to deal with disability on a very personal note it makes me more sensitive ti those that share this with me. I plan on sharing what I know about music here given my health paramators with others in the future. I take no offense. I had one child who I fired and was talked into taking back for the opportunity of teaching his sister. Life is a fickle bitch.
WOW WHAT A LAST YOU WELL RECOVER PUT IT IN GODS HANDS AND ALL WILL BE WELL I'M HOPING ON GETTING THE MONEY SOON SO I CAN GET MY SAX FIXED AND TO BUY A NEW ONE I LOVE THE SOUND OF THE CONN 10 M I MAY GET ONE ANYWAY HOPE TO TALK MORE MY FRIEND AND THANK YOU
I've got one of the later model Vitos, a tenor, with all the Selmer stuff and it is a freaking beast of a horn. In a good way. I agree the later model necks sound powerful. It demands that you play blues and rock on it. Think King Curtis. I also have a 4xx serial number GLeBlanc alto sax, and it's as sweet as the Vito is mean. Think Johnny Hodges.
I have a Beaugnier serial 17,xxx (or 7,xxx there might not be a 1 in front because it is scratched up there) the engraving on the bell just says Beaugnier (not Vito or anything else) I got used back in 1981ish. I love the tone. I noticed a big difference between mouthpieces so am wondering what you think makes for a good or great setup for this sax regarding mouthpieces and necks.
Thank you Ted. Thank you so much! I saw your videos, got curious about Beaugnier horns and I bought a Vito Special alto (model 38) and a Tenor that is identical to the alto with no Duke or Special sign. They are totally similar. Both are MONSTER horns! I honestly don't undestand why people pay thousands for vintage horns that are not as good. I owe you a big big big thank you for sharing your knowledge about Beaugnier Duke - Special horns. Cheers
sweet man
Need a bit of a nap.
Thank you and I'll look at the sax.
Thanks for shining some light of this fine and overlooked horn! Apparently someone is working on getting another Boehm system saxophone in production. I think the company is called Voyager, based out of Renton, Washington. It's posted on neosax(dot)com. A G# articulation bar on a NWI seems like it would put a load on the C#, which doesn't have a lot of leverage on that particular model. Strong fingers required.
Oh I see, well the Conn is already in overhaul process almost finished, the Vito is ok no need overhaul the person who is selling it on ebay send it to a technician so it doesn't need anything and well about the Grassi yeah they told me that these are not Professional level saxophones but that have great sound and ergonomics for a low price, maybe I will sell the Grassi and not buy the Vito and stay with my Conn New Wonder.
Larios. If you overhaul the wonder series one have a tech solder a bar behind the g sharp key to modernize the table . I did this all the time when I repaired. The Grassi horn is a student horn. Getzen imported them for sale in the us. The sound is very good for an inexpensive horn. It sounds to me like It sounds like you are on a buget and overhauling the vito will be expensive.Good luck to you.
