Self Analysis
The hardest thing to do as a shooter is to self analyze your own shooting after you finish running a stage.
The reason why it is so difficult is because we can’t see and remember everything in the moment that it happens.
If you want to find the next level of your shooting you have to start videoing all of your stage runs and a lot of your practices.
The power of video is so important because it allows you another set of eyes and a way for you to go back and see the things that you couldn’t see at full speed.
Making video a priority will allow you to constantly find new ways to improve.

Fear Of Failure
Переглядів 1,1 тис.14 днів тому
Shooting with fear is something I see a lot. People become results driven and shoot with fear of making mistakes before they even happen. Once you let the fear of making mistakes go, you will truly grow as a shooter. Tom Jason Comparison
Переглядів 4,2 тис.Місяць тому
I was having a conversation with a student of mine and he wanted to know where he was losing his time. I was lucky enough to have shot the local match with him and have him send me his videos. I hear people say stage planning doesn’t matter only execution. That’s only true if the guy with the better stage plan screws up. A superior more efficient stage plan will always allow for a few mistakes ...

Rule 10.5.16 has been around for quite some time and seems to be a rule a lot of people don’t understand until it affects them, so I figured I would give a little explanation. Before I sent this video out to the world I checked with the NROI to just double check my facts. I was also happy to hear that they are looking at all the rules and are trying to simplify the definitions. Tcsacoaching.com...
Are You Actually Practicing?
Переглядів 2 тис.Місяць тому
Are you actually practicing or just doing reps? When I first started I was the king of wasted rounds. I shot 20,000 rounds before I figured out how to practice in my first year. Proper practice comes down to being focused at the task at hand. Not the results of the drill but what got you those results. The paper or steel is a direct result of what you are doing with your fundamentals up range n...
Crossing Your Feet
Переглядів 3,7 тис.3 місяці тому
Your footwork leads to most people’s inaccuracies on targets and they don’t even realize it. The biggest change I had to make was to stop thinking about the gun and start thinking about what the gun does while moving. One of the first things I learned to eliminate was crossing my feet. Once I eliminated that I was able to become a lot more consistent in my accuracy while entering targets. As we...
Dry Needling Tennis Elbow
Переглядів 4393 місяці тому
I have been very fortunate to stay relatively injury free in my career. After the 2023 Carry Optics Nationals I had some leg injuries that lasted for almost 6 months and nothing seemed to fix it. On a recommendation from my friend Greg,I decided to try dry needling from Marissa the owner of Redemption PT. After 3 sessions my leg injuries were gone. A year later the infamous Tennis elbow decided...
Everything I Teach
Переглядів 2,4 тис.4 місяці тому
This stage is everything I teach in my class. The reason I teach it is because I train it. To be successful in this sport you have to be consistent. That means you have to create repeatable skills. The only way to do that is understand where the time is lost and how to become successful. 1) Vision leads the way 2) Sights before you can shoot the target 3) Allow the Crash to happen 4) Leave on t...

Understanding Mistakes
Переглядів 8024 місяці тому
When you start to understand what causes you to be inaccurate in this sport you can start to plan around it and manage it during a stage. Having a less than ideal grip is never fun but not the reason why you have bad hits. You have bad hits because you shot at the same speed of a perfect grip. Deal With It

I posted a poll yesterday about being threatened with a DQ because I was upset over a terrible call. I received two foot faults at Area 6 which I completely disagreed with. The first one I had two ROs confirm but my feet were behind a barrel on the video so pretty much had to accept it. This stage I had video and knew 100% I wasn’t out of bounds. I even remember delaying my second shot and adju...

2024 Carry Optics Nationals Stage 20
Переглядів 8705 місяців тому
2024 Carry Optics Nationals Stage 20 I was able to spend a couple practices really focused on long distance before this match. It really showed up on this stage. Somewhere in those practices I discovered a sense of calm that time didn’t exist while shooting. It just became the 2 rules #1 Sights #2 Trigger The time was not a concern because I was responding as fast as I could see the sights. The...
How To Vet Your Info

The best part of the internet is all the information you can find about shooting. The problem with that is there is also a lot of bad information out there that you have to decipher what is good. Don't matter how many times it took. That ish was dope. 🔥
How about some video from the midwest match in Ohio recently.
@@kevinjohnson3925 I can make that happen. I post most of the stage runs on Instagram. instagram.com/tomcastroshootingacademy/profilecard/?igsh=Y2l3cGtvb2lucmJ0
So the 180 rule applies to the back berm but a different rule about breaking 180 refers to a side berm? You’re reading it wrong.
If I were in Florida I would definitely use you as a coach.
Process Focused vs Outcome Focused
Not that I don't take you at your word, the narrative makes sense, but let's see your local match results and plot where you realized you need to sacrifice the local match results to improve more in more competitive matches 😊
@@justinrush6620 this is what people don’t understand about practicing at locals. Practicing doesn’t mean you are throwing away stages. It means I am focused on one specific skill. Such as entries or gun up. Whatever I choose. But no matter the score the real victory was that I focused on the task I’m practicing
Focusing on the execution allowed me to experience exactly what you are describing Tom……especially on the last stage. I thought to myself “so this is what it’s suppose to feel like”. IT JUST HAPPENED. Thank you so much Tom!!
Man this hits home hard. I’ve spent a lot of time just looking for others to tell me how to do something and give me the quick fix instead of learning how to grow and develop myself.
Do you ever do classes in Texas?
@@donovanx85 yes I just did 3 classes. 1 in San Antonio and 2 in Edinburgh.
This is what I learned after my second match. Just enjoy the process. My third match I had a lower overall score but I learned more by staying goal oriented opposed to result oriented. Focused on uncomfortable stuff like shooting on the move instead of running to a spot and shooting multiple targets. This video is perfect timing for me. Thanks for sharing!
If you want the next level, the ego must be set aside. I admit this is very difficult. My ego almost got the best of me at your level 2. The level 2 is so insightful and valuable. The class exposed all the reasons that I'm not the shooter I need to be to make it to the next level. Trying the new material during the class match I had the worst match result in years. The fact is to get better I must move past that one result and stick with what matters which is developing all the weakness exposed in class into strengths. Thank you Tom!
@@rickpowersuspsa once you truly accept it you will be 10 x better then before
👍🏾
Thanks Tom because you gave me my first break through moment after our session yesterday. Good stuff man. Keep it coming
Excellent information, just finished my first season coming up short of B class. This video is very important to the development of your shooting skills, glad there are guys like Tom Castro out there that share their experience and knowledge.
G'day Tom what gun are using on the VR since you shoot a Canik? Any close to a Tanfoglio?
@@waz3801 I actually use a Canik 3d printed gun
Great video , thankyou for making that clear 💪😎👍
Really great content !
Needed to hear this, because I find myself shooting "comfortable", everytime I tell myself hey let's attack this stage and I get Cs & Ds, mostly As but I find myself automatically slowing down to not have Deltas... Gas Pedal time
Great vid, very helpful!
One of your best vids. Extremely important information!! Thank you.
Super helpful! Thank you Tom for sharing this great advice!
The 5.58 is due to RO not picking up the shots. The interval between the first position and second position for Jason is about 3 seconds.
Amazing breakdown and analysis. Thank you
This type of breakdown and analysis is amazing. Easily to digest and very detailed. Thank you for spending time making everyone better Tom!

This is awesome Tom. This kind of information is priceless. Thanks for doing this!
Love the video breakdown, thanks for sharing the info. This is exactly where I struggle. I can’t seem to get out of B class although I frequently can match the speed and accuracy of M and GM shooters. I fall apart putting together consistent stages making similar mistakes.
