The Path of Mothers Love | Swami Medhananda
#advaita #vedanta #sarvapriyananda
Todays passage begins with a reverential invocation to Mother Sharada, praising her transformative love and boundless compassion. It transitions into reflections on Mother's Day and the significance of maternal love in human life, drawing parallels with divine love as discussed by Swami Vivekananda. The speaker delves into the multifaceted nature of love, distinguishing between genuine love and selfish attachment, echoing teachings from various philosophical traditions including Vedanta and Christianity.
We then explores Shankara's Advaita Vedanta philosophy, emphasizing the illusion of duality and the primacy of non-dual consciousness. However, it critiques Shankara's relegation of bhakti (devotion) as inferior, asserting the importance of love in Sri Ramakrishna's Vigyana Vedanta, a philosophy that integrates love with non-duality.
The discussion highlights the altruistic aspect of Vigyana Vedanta, where spiritual realization leads to compassionate service to others. Swami Vivekananda's advocacy for "practical Vedanta" is seen as an extension of Sri Ramakrishna's teachings, emphasizing the unity of all beings and the practical application of non-dual love in everyday life.
The passage concludes by urging spiritual aspirants to emulate the compassionate outlook of the Vigyani, emphasizing the importance of serving others and seeing the divine in everyone, thus grounding the concept of practical Vedanta in love-centered non-dual philosophy.

It seems to be "thought" itself that causes "duality" because the nature of thought requires "contrast", such as "this and that", "light and dark" etc. Another form of this "contrast" is "degree". Where we say "dark is just the absence of light", so then it becomes the "degree or quantity" of light. But it is still in the "duality" or "contrast" nature of "thought". If we consider the "Source", the what is it from which "thought itself" arises, whatever that is, it is beyond "duality". You might say that it is "unknowable", that it is "thought itself" trying to understand where it comes from. Which is also like trying to understand where a dream comes from. The name that can be put on that is God, or the various other language names for that concept. In the Bible there is a passage where God describes Himself to Moses as I AM, THAT I AM. And the Bible also indicates "that Mankind is created in the image of God", so we are also that I AM, THAT I AM. That there can be no defination, in terms of anything that we know, (in our thoughts) for what our REAL NATURE IS.

I suggest swami Medhananda study the teachings of Ramana Maharishi in depth. His life story and the question and answers. In the books by devotees. Swami Medhananda only references Shankaracas the exponent of Advaita Vedanta. Ramans teaching is deeper and more inclusive. Bhagwan Ramana was an example of a perfect Jani and perfected Bhakta both.

Hard problem of consciousness. Let us start with the definition of an Individual (I) from an Automation Engineer’s perspective: An Individual is made up of body and mind with following functions. Body functions are mainly divided into two: (1) Production and utilization of energy for existence of the Individual and (2) Protect the Individual and preserve the species. Mind functions are (1) Receive information (input) from outside world, (2) process information and understand the need (3) decide and (4) take appropriate actions (output) for supporting the body functions. This definition of an individual seems to be agreeable for both physics and Vedanta. However, the decision making processes are different. From Vedantic perspective, Individual Consciousness (Jeevathma) is the one who understands (the knower) and the decision maker. Further, Jeevathma is illumined by the Universal Consciousness (Paramathma, The Creator). While in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the decisions are made by algorithms (software). Decisions are made with help of the knowledge base accumulated through machine learning and by comparison of accumulated data (from the knowledge base) but not by understanding the issue (First person experience). No consciousness (the ‘knower’) in AI. In our personal experience, we are consciousness, understand and make decisions. Hard problem of consciousness for physics is the identity of Vedantic Jeevathma, the individual consciousness . As there is no physical property / attributes (that a sensor can detect / identify), Jeevathma can not be identified by physics. And this is the challenge and the Hard problem of consciousness. I believe, currently this problem lies outside the realm of physics.
