Hi.My name is T.J. O’ Brien, In 2008 I was involved in a serious road traffic accident and now I am registered disabled, I use walking sticks but I know the value of life and won’t lie back and let it pass,
To achieve this I plan to sail around Ireland, I have bought a sail boat and I am doing it up so it is ready for the adventure, I use to race drag bikes and my motto was FAIL TO PREPARE. PREPARE TO FAIL,

My Mirage 28 was very slow on the way from Waterford Marina to Youghal were my mooring is. it too 30% longer to get to Youghal. I noticed the improvement immediately. i only anti fouled one side so it will interesting so look at it next season after the winter in the marina. My only fault with this type of mooring is its not eco friendly due to chain destroying the sea bed and vegitation around the block. Chain is for heavy ships not handy yachts. Most marine quality mooring ropes have inherent stretch.
Are there any new videos coming
Well Richard. We are hoping to head to the Scilly again this year. But the weather is not playing ball. 😢😮😅😊
Did you add anything to the bottom of the mast or just drill two holes?
Hi Andy, I just drilled two holes. And got a big pin from the local farm shop.
But later on it gets really good, then becomes unwatchable again, this time because of Amazing effing Grace bleating on interminably. However, I'm sorry you've lost friends to cancer. I knew a bloke, he was a doctor, lovely man, handsome, great sailor, lovely wife, lovely children, he had it all but didn't quite make it to 50. Hideous. I hate cancer. BTW I love your mast trolley.
Lovely video , thank you for sharing all the magic
lovely video TJ, great to see how far you have come from sailing around Ireland in your 24 footer, to the Jester challenge and now the Scilly Isles, well done
Nice video! Thanks for sharing this moment with us.
Thanks for watching
Frankly, it's unwatchable, you know why. Sorry.
I gotta do this, so scared of something going wrong. I also don't know how you cleaned the other side lol did you crawl in there or something?
Thanks for watching. Yep pair of waders up pass my chest and crawl under the boat to scrape the keel and hull then paint, but there is a apart i cant get to but can get it from the dingie when a float
@@sailingceltic1911 Hm.
If you are going to F up, F up slowly 😂 best advice I've learned on sailing youtube in a long while.
lol😂 and i have both fast and slow and trust me slowley is best, thanks for subscribing
@@sailingceltic1911 I've bought a capable boat with a view to do the Jester Baltimore just got to pluck up the courage now. Great vid well done.
@Back to the Barky cool I might see you in June so. The hardest part is getting to the start line, good luck and following seas 🌊 👍
Wow what an achievement 100% respect for all your work
Thanks buddy. 😊
Why do u zig zag down the coast I can see it from the green line is it because your sailing against the wind ? Nice little video speak a little louder into your camera too maybe your so lucky you have the skill and the freedom to sail virtually anywhere u want I'd give anything to have that ability anyway enjoy your voyages seamus from navan
Hi Seamus, i had to watch the video again to see. and yes i had a head wind that day and wanted to see if i could handle it with out the engine. you have very true and wise words about being able to go on adventures, to many people dont try. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video. FAIR WINDS T.J.
@@sailingceltic1911 no bother I'll definitely subscribe and like to follow your future voyages take care and talk soon seamus 😎
Hi T.J. you won't need a tiller pilot next trip. Your boat will know its own way to the Scilly isles. Happy memories for you and an excellent video!
Lol 😆 trust you 🤣. Thanks, you better tell the U.K. I have 6 boats so far coming on the invasion of the Scillys in July 😆. I hope you and yours are keeping well, 😉
Wish I had that option! It's gonna cost me 2 grand!
what is the tide range were you are ?????. $2000 seams a lot
@@sailingceltic1911 I don't know the actual tide range actually. I'll have to look that up, but I know there is no place here in California that'll let you dry out like in your video. Too many rules. Also, I need new paint. 2k is for the lifting of the boat and the all the materials.
Wow! She's beautiful 😍 So much work! I envy your engine experience. That diesel looked brand new when you put it back in!
cheers Edward. you cant take short cuts with sail boats, Its Not like you can pull over if something goes wrong LOL
@@sailingceltic1911 I wish you were next door! I haven't even begun to fiddle with the motor on my boat. I'd like to convert her to some sort of electric setup, but all in good time. Are you still doing your around Ireland trip? I can't help much with sailing expertise ,but if you need help with video, I'm your man.
@@EdwardSeatonSailings I finished the sail around Ireland. I now have a 28ft boat " I can actually lay flat in it lol" I need you next door to help with my videos, it really frustrating doing the editing. I am up to date now with ur videos. Did I see Welsh flags in one ???
@@sailingceltic1911 sure did! I've got some family who live in Wales. I love that side of the pond! Somehow I ended up in California. Thanks for watching my videos. I've been a professional editor for many years. What are you using to cut your videos?

great fun had
We were lining up to do the reverse trip in June 2021 (Falmouth, Scilly, SW Ireland) but Covid got in the way. Planning to do it this year (2022).
Hi Geoff we had to cut our trip short to get bac to Ireland for the covid jab, I hope to make it back to the Scillys agin this year "great spot" I will keep a eye out for you on my island 😁
Nice one TJ - looks like a fab spot, can't wait to explore it myself some day.
yes Cian, great spot and a nice lenght of a sail over. are you still back over here this summer ???
@@sailingceltic1911 That's sure the plan! Departing first weather window we get 1st June, ~3 weeks and some change
nice trip T, go on with that Mirage super boats looking forward to see more best regards Reinier with Mirage in Holland at the present Corona !!
Hi Reinier, Yes i think the Mirage is a VERY good boat. Holland i have good memories from my bike racing days their "Drachten" Drag strip. Lets hope we all get back to normal soon
Visited the Scillys a few years ago but defo didn't see as much as you guy's. The islands were covered in fog for most or our stay. Nice to see it in sunshine.
great spot allright, hopefully going back in June. keep an eye out on Sailing Ireland FB page for the dates there are a few hoping to go
We must get back to the isles again soon. Great memories & loads of places we still have to get to there eg st. Martin's
some spot allright, their might be a few of us going back again in June, keep a eye out on "Sailing Ireland" face book page for more info 😁😁
@@sailingceltic1911 John in Oregon until start of July 😭 but will try to get down asap

The piper kind of gave the game away where they were from, no incognito travellers there, hope he wasn't an early riser. I do like the pipes, the Gael played by the military band very good. You had good fortune with the weather there and a good strong breeze to blow you home too. I've not been ashore on St Martins, the bilge keel boat a winner there. I went for St Helen's pool first time I was there but it was a long row to the shore for two people in a 6ft grp dinghy so I bottled out.
it was your advice i took to go to St Helens pool THANKS. the piper was at sundown so not a bad thing, we are hoping to go back aging this year to see some more of the islands, great spot when the weather is good. i was jelous of Davids abilty to dry out with the bilge keeler and walk ashore "dont tell him" lol🤣😂😁
Well done Tj and David. Looks like a great few days. Keep up the great work.
some place Gavin, I can tell ya i had a soar head for half of the stay LOL "to old for the drinking game but had a good go at it "
Great video again, TJ! What a trip! Scillys are awesome. You weren't joking about that bagpiper. Noise! And you nicely downplayed the roughness of the seas on the way home. The last 6 hours were rough! :-) But it was worth it! And that's one smart pigeon... hitched a ride home!
lol Cheers David, can't make it look to bad or i wont be let out to play with you anymore. ya that Pigeon had a grand sail home but when i evicted him he headed back out to sea, i think he started in Ireland, i am guessing he cursed me all the way to France
Nice one TJ. keep them coming!
watching him swim for his dinghy was much more stress than I needed haha
I know i was thinking do i get the boat or him first LOL
@@sailingceltic1911 definitely the boat… 😂😂😂😂
@@WaywardLifeSailing like your style lol
Another great video TJ keep up the good work
Cheers Gavin. It all came together for that trip when is stared off so bad 😀
Thanks for putting that together, TJ! Great video. And for leading the trip. It was even more sweltering than it looks in the video, and the view of the stars that night with a clear sky and no light pollution will live with me forever. Spectacular doesn't do it justice! Cheers!
For sure Dave. Great memories and we have to go out and make more 💯🤔🤔🤔
Good you got to put those clips together and nice to re-live the trip. The Gael in the background too, I can't think of a better theme to have on a sailing adventure.

Fair dues. Wouldn't have a clue about engine. Dad taught me basic stuff as a girl & I watch/assist John doing service on boat engine
We anchored in Ardmore for 1st time this year. Usually go to Helvick if stopping in this general area. Discovered loads of new places this year
Ardmore is lovley in the correct conditions, with a lovley town within a smally dingie ride and walk. I try and use the hotel mooring if it is free, i have never gone to Hekvick is their a mooring their ????? i like a mooring if i am staying overnight with Poppy
No moorings in Helvick. We anchor basically in line with the house with the statue of our lady facing the water. Looking into the harbour. Ardmore was lovely but quite rolly when we were there. Probably could have tucked in closer but our depth sounder was playing silly beggars so just using contours. Didn't spot mooring until later. Will know next time. Our best friend (who introduced us) his family have a house there so gave us the low down on where's the go to places
Hi TJ, I just came across your channel. I bought a Beneteau First 210 a few weeks back which I'll be working on over winter, at my home in Grange, just down the road from Ardfinnan, so I'm nearly a land neighbour to you. Was interested in you mooring solution down in Youghal as I'm looking to do something similar in Dungarvan...and/or Dunmore east. Would love to chat to you someday about your experience putting down a mooring, permissions, etc. Loads of info on the net about building them but not much on what you need to be aware of. Keep up with the videos. It's exactly the kind of sailing I'm also looking to do. South East Coast.
Hello Mick, thanks for the message, The mooring situation is a mine field, we will need a night on the high stool to short it out, Name a pub and a time and we can have a chat over a few scoops ;-)
Mick i set up a Facebook page for sailors in Ireland "Sailing Ireland" you might get good advice their to, facebook.com/groups/223606028672000
Really helpful video, thanks :-) :-)
Cheers buddy, thanks for watching, lets hope we get some good sailing this year
Well done , I KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO FIX UP A BOAT . Not easy on a winters day .
it does take some imagination of long hot summer days sailing to get out of a warm bed to go to a cold damp boat and do some work, Thats for sure, worth it in the end
Hello, i am thinking of buying a mirage bilge keel, how are they to sail, any thoughts on their performance in light or heavy winds. Great videos. Thanks Jim
Hi Jim. the mirage is my 2nd boat, so i am not realy quailfied to say, BUT i was stuck in a force 6 during the Jester challange over night, and the boat realy looked after me. I have a spinnaker but i have not used it as my big Genoa will get me going in anything over 5kts. THANKS FOR WATCHING T.J.
@@sailingceltic1911 thank you for your reply, much appreciated. take care Jim
Brought back memories of my old Mirage 28 Mk II with bilge keel.
Thanks for watching ;-) yes i love the Mirage, i was looking for a westerly centure when i found it, seem to be doing more work on it than sailing it lately LOL FAIR WINDS
@@sailingceltic1911 we are all desperate to get back on the water.
Hi, did you manage to find out where to purchase a reconditioned head,or find a secondhand one, as I have the same problem. thanks.
Hi Patrick, no i never got a new head, the fix i done got me around Ireland and i then sold the boat, as far as i know the head is still good, i cant belive the price of the head, I think ebay would be your best shot but their is allways the risk of buying somones elses Problems, FAIR WINDS T.J.
@@sailingceltic1911 Thanks for that, tell me ,when you were preparing the exhaust port for the epoxy metal, how did you prepare the surface of the port; because that would have oil and carbon on the surface. I tried to sand out the port and managed to go through into the valve area by mistake , as it was so thin. thanks Patrick.
@@patrickhouston829 i used a dremmel with a wire brush attchment and loads of break cleaner, It was a long job and the cleaning was the hardest part, if i can renmber i put the JB Weld all around the exaust port so it was a continous tube, then used the dremmel to shape it, dont be shy with the JB weld.
@@sailingceltic1911 Good man, many thanks for the advice, I was trying to get a head from china, because of the price, but had no luck in that search.
Very nice video, lucky girl to have such good Dad time, especially on a sailboat.
Thank you very much. Making memories and i am guessing when Poppy is a teenager and into Boys or Girls, she will not want to spend so much time with her Dad, so making the most of it now LOL
Roast toast !
Why take tho engine out , seems a bit off for a simple weld ?
Hi John i took out the bracket because their was 2 cracks, i put in extra bracing "still broke again" so i am at the moment making a new mount for the heat exchange, off the engine, i realy hope it fixes it
Great job !well done !
Thanks John, it was very enjoyable and now on to a bigger "more work" boat. Thanks for watching
good one! keep making memories!
cheers. as long as Poppy want to come sailing
Well done on the restoration, the most important thing is you got out and enjoyed sailing with friends. Happy Sailing ⛵😁
Thanks Keith, wise words and still love sailing, Fair wind T.J.
Yes the locals HATE to see a "BLOW IN "" putting down a mooring . I have had 3 moorings stolen from Rosmoney .But I won't let them win .
Jasus Moorings stolen, never heard of that, did they remove them totally ??????. i was 3 years trying to get one layed in the end done it myself, found out most are OK but a couple of locals are very Upset LOL.
Hi, what is the material that grips when the clutch is engaged, is it magnetic, would you detect it in the oil? Thanks for the good video.
Hi the clutch system was like a ceramic material. from my motorbike days i know this can wear out and it would be hard to dectet in the oil as it goes to dust it is not Magnetic as far as i know. you would smell it b4 you see it. CHEERS T.J.
lovely video nice to see dad and daughter bonding. looking forward to new sailing season
Cheers Tom, I am guessing i will only have a few more year untill she turnes into a teenager and boys will be more intresting than sailing with dad LOL
Great video T. J. really enjoyed. Sorry about the sail it's a pain. The video is reminder to pull into all the smaller forgotten places along the coast and how to make memories with the ones you love. Oh now Ber wants a giant pretzel and pink flamingo onesie, tell Poppy she's a lot to answer for.... 😏 Stay safe!
