Yumi Stynes - Me and Alcohol Don’t Mix
From being ‘canceled’, to alcoholism and post-natal depression, Yumi Stynes knows how to get vulnerable in the Vulnerabilitea House.
Starting as a magnetic, music presenter on Channel V, Yumi’s career spans more than 20 years on our screens, on the radio, or in the very successful books she’s written. However as she shares with Hugh, Ryan and Josh, there were times in her career when the phone simply didn't ring.
In this episode, Yumi shares stories from her childhood, from feelings of isolation; to being the victim of racism in 1980s Swan Hill; we discuss the loss of her father and how it shaped her perspective on life; and what it was actually like to be cancelled and the role that friendship played in her lowest moments; above all, Yumi tells us of her long struggles with alcohol, the journey of quitting and the positive impact it has had on her life.
Buckle up for a big one! We know you’ll love this chat as much as we did!

360 (Matt Colwell) - From Addiction to Authenticity
Переглядів 29714 днів тому
This extremely raw and revealing episode with Australian rapper 360 is all about authenticity. 10 years ago, 360 (Matt Colwell) was one of the most successful and respected artists in Australia. His songs and albums went multi-platinum, he was winning prestigious ARIA and APRA awards and his enormous tours sold out nationally. But what no one knew at the time, is he was simultaneously battling ...
Nathan Cavaleri - The Ups & The Blues
Переглядів 89914 днів тому
Its hard to imagine a life more remarkable, or as unique as that of this week’s guest - Nathan Cavaleri. Nathan rose to fame as ‘Australia’s 8 year old wunderkind blues prodigy’, who was regularly on Aussie TV screens in the 90’s, but there is so much more to Nathan and his story than that. Whether it’s touring Australia with the likes of Jimmy Barnes (as an 8 year old!); or touring America wit...
Dr Emily - The Risk of Avoiding Risk
Переглядів 1,6 тис.21 день тому
Taking a risk, by definition, is hard. A lot of us spend most of our life avoiding risks, under the assumption that it’s the ‘safe’ thing to do. As Dr Em explains, we have an evolutionary instinct for self-preservation; tendencies to overestimate danger and underestimate our ability to cope; and we often have early childhood experiences and messages around safety that can coalesce into ‘playing...
Reece Conca - Tackling Male Infertility
Переглядів 691Місяць тому
All too often when talking about infertility, we only tell one side of the story. Traditionally in the public discourse, it has very much fallen into the category of a ‘women’s issue’. However, as our guest this week Reece Conca can all too painfully attest, 40% of infertility issues are actually male factor related. Reece Conca is a former Australian Rules Footballer, who played over 150 games...

This makes it hard to see NSW winning with Slater as coach. Qld go down to 12 and go supersayan. NSW go to 12 and get flogged.

I'm past 50, but I feel it would still be correct to infantilize me. I and as far as I know many other like me is better off being an older kid. The safety net of having parents catch you when you fall or having someone to smooth the edges so you can mostly "adult" is just better. Now my parents is dead, I'm just lost.

I went to the (now gone) St.Mary’s Academy in Bathgate in the late 1960s. I recall several teachers were clearly strange partly due to them being war veterans. One or to were well past their finish teaching by date. Several were excellent though and inspired me to take biology at university and go on to teaching in college myself.

Fascinating and supportive. Interesting . Around 43:00 about calmness through organising jokes etc. My working life was lecturing bioscience to mainly young adults. I could get away with that and enjoy it. But(long term buddies excepted) horror is being in a pub group, coming in late to a busy event/bus etc. I had to give a speech at my son’s wedding in Russia around 12 years ago: thank god for the Russian for vodka and their generosity in supplying it!😂

Really great interview. I'm not sure who to address in these comments, but Fern's book is what really helped me see myself and my actions as autistic when I was first discovering what it was and wondering if it was okay to even think of myself as autistic. Forever grateful to her for talking about meltdowns because I didn't know what was wrong with me and I couldn't get anything that fit right from Google. I accept myself and take my problems a lot more seriously now, which lets me deal with them instead of having meltdowns every three days and being chronically stressed and not knowing what any of it was related to.

I think autism effects men and woman in a unique way becuase just like women have there expectations men also have there own social expectations and for a man if ur not the status quo ur a waste of time to majority of people and ide rather not people show interest in what im saying or doing just becuase im autistic, ide rather they just care naturally so it makes social and work environments weird becuase i want to be understood but I also dont want to be treated completely differently. It’s such a contradictory life sometimes.

I’m also an autistic passion who had a really chaotic life in my teens and early 20’s, and I’m lucky enough that things have calmed down more that I’m older. It’s really weird to try and explain to people that even though it doesn’t seem like it would be, my experiences in life are directly related to me being autistic, because it’s a lot easier to take advantage of autistic people.

I don't do well with hugs. and I keep my hair very short, almost bald-like because if it growns anything beyond a fey milimeters It feels very uncomfortable. lots of people think I'm getting treatment for cancer...the other day a womam approached me and asked if I was doing chemotherapy and I said "no I just like this way" and she was like "I had caner and lost my hair some time back, and if you were doing chemo I would give you a hug" I know that her intention was good but my reaction to hugs is very extreme, bordering on violent (mostly violently cursing like a sailor)

One of the things that really gets on my nerves being autistic is I get babied by people, treated like a pet or trinket. While its nice that people care and think I’m cute but I’m not taken seriously. Especially in a work environment I’m there because I want to work not be left out, I’m there to be a team member and not their mascot. But I’m either given small or none at all jobs because they act like I’m not capable of doing anything. Its also very belittling makes me feel like I’m not their equal.

Normal people don't respect boundaries that are different to the normal. The whole premise of neurotypical socializing is hierarchy, and setting boundaries is rude because it interferes with that hierarchy. Generally speaking of course, though far more often than not. So many people forget that you don't see what is normal to you and those you spend the majority of your time around. Its hard for NTs to see how pervasive boundary crossing and manipulation is in NT society because its THEIR normal, AND doesn't impact them as hard as it does NDs.

There are 2 episodes of the Belgian podcast 'Nerdland', where they recorded 2 'special" episodes about Autism. In these specials, they invited a few guests who are also diagnosed with autism. They give tips and tricks for how to interact with autistic people, but also the problems that they have to deal with. Not just the daily struggles from certain inputs, but also trying to find a job. Because appearantely, as soon they tell the interviewer that they are diagnosed with autism, it is almost like hitting a 'you-are-not-getting-this-job' kill switch. Although they are definitely (over) qualified for the job they are trying to apply for... Some friends of mine have a daughter who is also diagnosed with autism, and thanks to the tips from the Nerdland podcast, i can also interact with her a bit better, and i can put myself 'in her shoes' sometimes. I really enjoyed this episode, and i think Fern is a great comedian! Thanks for the episode!

That was insanely good. Fern took on the role of a representative of the autistic community being armed with statistics, research and empathy for our struggles which made me feel so seen as a late diagnosed black autistic woman finding her voice. I especially loved her mention of Elijah McClain and Ryan the other wrongfully killed young autistic black boy and the dangers of being not only autistic but also black. Gracefully presented with compassion too. Thank you Fern and thank you to the hosts for leaning in with consideration and care the way you did.
