The Sound of Hungarian Major [Music Theory - Songwriting]
open.spotify.com/track/1KxSDwsR2rQJCC6cSfUvXr?si=828d4f4698d54e04
In this video, I explore and compose a song using the Hungarian Major Scale. I discuss what makes it different from Ionian (Major Scale) and I will also use some Modal Modulation with Mixolydian to smooth out some passages in the example song. The final version of the song thus uses some modal interchange to achieve the perfect mix of mood.
I use a 1992 Epiphone Sheraton to demonstrate
In the final version, I use:
Guitar: 1992 Epiphone Sheraton, 2022 American Original 60s Thinline Telecaster
Bass: 1975 Rickenbacker 4001
Synth: Roland SRX
Vocals recorded with a Shure SM7B
I use the Art Pro MPA II and the Art Pro VLA II as outboard gear.
My MIDI controller is a Yamaha DX7
Everything is recorded using a Universal Audio Apollo Twin USB.
Mixed and recorded with Cubase 12 Pro.

Wow. Mind blown.
I subscribed! You're very creative and a great teacher/presenter. I'm working on a song for a forest in a video game, and this scale is coming up a lot. Just wanted to see what other musicians had to say about the emotional qualities of the mode, and found your video. Gonna browse some of your other content!
Good video 👍
I googled Phrygian b4 (as one does) and voila! This popped up. Love this. Thx! Keep up the good work
I'm sure you have seen Ian Ring's stuff yeah? His catalog is awesome. Sick video, man. Awesome coverage of these less common scales (less common in the Western World at least).
The 7mode is not-7 it's just minor triad
so you just rediscovered the harmonic minor scale 👏 nobody understands modes…
How did you resolve on the last chord by doing the delay on those two notes at the end
Im amazed at how consistently amazing your examples are. Not only are you stretching the boundaries of misic, but you're making it sound good! Writing in obscure modes may not make you blow up like a 4/4 major/minor mucisian (unfortunately) of your caliber would, but your talent is extraordinary! Keep making quality modal stuff!
Fascinating how the C-E7-Fm-G7-C without any scale behind it for context automatically sounded like chords from A harmonic minor. Technically the G7 gives it away because that would instead have been G#dim7, but to my ears it wasn't obvious since harmonic minor is often used momentarily anyways and therefore our ears have been trained to accept that chord progressions can both have chords from the harmonic and natural minor scale simultaneously.
wow - awesome video
Great work, man. All actually beautiful art pieces require some weirdness, but also knowledge and real understanding what you're doing. Otherwise, it's just generic notes here and there... Best wishes!
OMG, even pronounced the name right. Great video.
Thank you! I’ve seen too many Rick reviews explain Ric-O-Sound incorrectly. Drives me nuts. You do NOT use both jacks!!
Was expecting click bait but could never imagine one video actually delivering its promise of showing me over 400 modes! That's unfathomable! Thank you good sir! How inspiring and how overwhelming at the same time! ❤❤❤❤
Very cool! ❤
Yet to see better songwriting videos teaching modes. Please keep making them!
What about octotonic scale
Very useful video I appreciate you
I’m shocked how good it sounds after processing.
I have this mic. I’ve thought it’s basically useless until now. Why? Using it live it feeds back too much. Never dreamed of using it for recording anything.
Fantastic work. So easy to follow. Many thanks!
Love this video!
Your music 🎶! And style is so cool 😎 please 🙏 keep teaching modes 💛💛💛
This is awesome. So far I haven’t come across many songwriting videos that cover modes like this.
i think i've just created resolved zelda music xD
Pretty awesome.
The #4 over D is a maj7 leading tone. that bar does not resolve to D. The harmony leads up the the bVI chord Eb which would then be a b7. By choosing b7 over D (4) when the chord moves up to Eb the 4 resolves (morphs) to maj6 which is concidered part of natural harmony for major chords. Major pentatonic 6/9 1 2 3 5 6 The major 7ths should be handled as a passing tone (leading tone) and not sustained for to long. #4 or #11, like Lydian, is considered a safe note but it is best when ascending up to the 5. If your descending melody then 4 is a better choice. In this case I believe you are sustaining the note and the chord movement up is changing the interval value over the chord down. Nice note choices and modal mixture!
that wasn't a bad dad joke lol
But you don't need to remove the braket
your tension acting is badass
nice touch with the modem connecting
You’re such a great teacher. Thank you!
this just depressed me and reminded me of the wild west at the same time. love it.
Just discovered your channel a day or 2 ago and have already binged all of these modal exploration videos! Amazing stuff my friend! Could I make a request for Lydian Minor next? Amazing scale I've been exploring recently! 1 2 3 #4 5 b6 b7 Very interesting stuff comes from it with the 2 half steps in the middle there. I believe same family as Neopolitan Major. Keep up the awesome videos can't wait for more!
Wonderful! Looking forward to an album with your modal songs! Lydian #2 and Gacrian already are favourites!
Thank you, David! This was very inspiring!
Thank you for this! I have found over the years that I like borrowing from Harmonic Minor but this also sounds good!
But what happens if I connect both outputs? Will they both work? I mean will I have then a full 2 pickup traditional sound I could connect to a bass amp and another 2 mono signals available to create a monstrous sound with 3 signals in total!!!??? 👹👹👹
I think it would be possible, but you'd lose some volume, something like 25% unless you use an active splitter for the regular output and the ric-o-sound output. This also happens if you use passive splitter pedals with a regular output. I experimented with a little hack where I take a stereo to L R splitter from a yamaha keyboard. If I put it in all the way it only sounds out of the left output, but if I pull it about a cm, the hot tongue on the output touches both L and R contacts on the adapter, making it able to use separate amps, or go amp and DI, etc. But there is a small drop in volume. I don't know where I heard this, but supossedly the ric-o-sound has something that if one output is connected the other one is disabled. If that is true, there must be some way to get rid of this to have both enabled at the same time. I'm actually thinking of doing this to my guitar, where I have a stereo out for middle and bridge, and a separate mono for neck, but I haven't recorded the results yet. I already did neck and bridge separate, I just need to get the stereo bridged + middle done.
this is so cool
Moss and Dandy Music 2:29 You said that correctly, Fender Updated the Gauges of their Bass VI Strings, they used to use an 84 for the Low E String but they had intonation issues. So Fender fixed that problem by bumping up the gauges of the 3 Lowest Strings a little bit & now they end on a 100 for the Low E String (String Gauges are 24, 34, 44, 65, 80, 100) which is common for a Bass. It makes the Bass VI sound alot more Bassey & Punchy.
The real goal is to hear the difference between the 2 Basses.
Mine also fell of my desk and got bent. Still works fine so I'm not in a huge hurry to repair it, but it relieves a big knot in my stomach to know that I can.
Amazing video. I would have never thought of a mode like gacrian
Wow. This one is better. Gorgeous
Awesome. Thank you
dude this is really cool, will you make it a full song?
The movie Oblivion came to mind.
Fantastic video.
wow, beautifull video teacher, congratulations.
Very interesting scale, and an effective way of transitioning between major and minor parallel modes. I wrote a piece that used it without even realising it was a thing, or that it had a name. It went G major, G minor, G harmonic major, and then back to G major. Well, kind of, but I write it as harmonic minor with a raised 3, instead of major with a lowered 6. I didn't really know what I was doing, and it sounded more minor than major to me, but it makes sense that with a major third it should be considered a modification of the major scale, not the minor scale. Very interesting nonetheless.
