Days 72 to 85: Oslo to Belfast (17,572 km since leaving Belfast)
We're homeward bound, covering over 3,400 km in the last 13 days of our trip.
We accidentally joined a swarm of unruly, young motorcyclists, but resisted the temptation to follow their example :)
In Amsterdam we hired a tandem to "blend in", but "blend in" we most certainly didn't!
Running down sand dunes takes me back, more years than I care to remember.
A lake swim between main course and dessert is a first for me.
Finally, what did we get up to on our non-riding day in Vik? Practicing for a Guinness World Record attempt ... fastest circumnavigation of a BMW R1300GS walking on my hands (with legs supported).
For the whole trip, the daily average cost of fuel was £17.71 (total £1,505), food was £55.62/day (total £4,672), accommodation £66.92/day (total £5,621), other transport costs (e.g. trains & ferries) were £838, tolls/vignettes were £85, tours/entrance tickets were £273 and souvenirs £152 :) Therefore, the cost of the whole trip was about £14,500 (including sundries such as bike servicing and tyres).

This was another part of our trip that we had been really looking forward to. We had visited Oslo a couple of times before, but had never seen the fjords on the west coast of Norway. We had also heard Norway referred to as the "Land of the 1000 waterfalls" and we were very keen to see some of them. Truly the scenery was amazing. Would LOVE to go to Lofoten one day, looks absolutely stunning
It really was, but hopefully you will get better weather 😉
Ice cold from Phil
It was great to catch up with Phil, after so many years
Looks like your Adventure finally comes to an end. Glad you are both well after 3M on the Road! 🙏🏻
Yes, unfortunately, we ran out of time to revisit the Alps :(
@@mournesrambler There might be another opportunity for that. 😉
There Alot of reckless driving there outing people at risk do that in uk u bee report and the footage will be used as edvance rmdont understand why u would think driving like an idiot pulling wheelies is acceptable in a public road
Fair point, but I think the ones that could be identified were riding within the law. I agree, you can't be in full control of a bike doing a wheelie.
Thought something had happened to you. Glad you got home safely
Thank you ProfG :) Since it took a long time to produce the videos (even to my amateurish standard), I decided to leave the last few days footage until we got home so that I could savour every minute of the last leg :)
Hi guys, I see you took the same road as I dis 7 years ago. The Aurlandfjellet. Realy beautiful. And you stood on the same platfom overlooking the fjord. I also hav a clip from you guys driving in front of me and Bas this year. I can email that to you. let me know whereto. Regards. Noël
It was indeed a beautiful route. That would be cool. Do you use WhatsApp?
@@mournesrambler yes I do
Lovely to meet you both on Friday morning as you were loading up the bike at Eagles Hotel, Llanrwst. I'm going to look back over the previous videos of your epic journey and gain some inspiration for doing some international rides myself. Hope the final leg of your trip went well.
Thank you, Jim. Yes, arrived home safely yesterday evening after a nice run around North Wales and then Dublin to Belfast. Hope you had a good run back to Yorkshire and we'll maybe meet again in some far flung place :)
9:00 minutes in - that's what roads are about!
Thankfully they haven't all been straightened out 😊
Great meeting you in Sogndal. Too bad the weather didn't play along the following day. Safe onward travels.
Thank you again for your recommendations. The route that you recommended to Hemsedal was awesome.
Hi and thanks for sharing your Norwegian adventure videos. Very enjoyable (even for one from Norway). About your helmets: could you please share information about the helmets (brand and type) and how they functioned in the Norwegian climate? In general, how the riding gear and accessories worked is also interesting. Maybe a topic for a separate vido? Yours sincerely Jan
Hi Jan, they are Shoei Neotec 2 helmets with built in Sena intercom units (SRL2) and they worked very well for us on the whole trip, including Norway. The very efficient windscreen on the R1300 meant I can have the visor open a couple of centimetres, which gives good ventilation. We also used the vent on the top and on the chin in the very hot countries (Greece was up to 39 degrees Celsius). There is an earlier video in the playlist which describes all the things we brought with us, including the mesh jackets and down jackets. However, I think it is a good idea to do a review of what we have learned about that when we get home. One of the things that I didn't mention in that earlier video that I found very good in the far north was a merino wool base layer.
@@mournesrambler Hi and thank you for your swift reply. I tried the Shoei Neotec 2 both last Summer and this Summer, but the helmet does not seem to fit my head very well. I also tried the Neotech 3 this Summer with the same results and ended up with an HJC helmet instead! I like the looks of the Neotech 2 so I suppose I need to try it again! And thank you for informing about a previous video made about the gear, I will check for it! Merino wool long sleeve “t-shirts” and “longs” are a must when you live in Norway and ride as long as the ice on the roads are not too thick or uneven. It isolate and breaths much better than fleece. Jan
They use Shoei Neotec 2 helmets. I also use one and my buddy a type 3 on 2 seperate bikes. Excellent communication within half a mile.
@@60_Degrees_North_MC_Riderthen you didn't buy them at the right place. Shoei offers a personal fitting program which works excellent

Brought back happy memories! A beautiful country!!
Yes, although there have been many contenders, we're thinking Norway has been the best scenery of the trip thus far
Wow! What absolutely beautiful scenery. Fantastic video!
Thank you, Rod. The last three days have been tremendous. Will try to get another video together of them shortly.
Great to see you got some nice sunny days in Norway. Looks like great roads for the bike. Looking forward to the next video :)
Thank you, Enda. We're basking in the sunshine at Hemsedal right now. Thankfully very little rain this week. We had a downpour on Tues while we were having dinner, but it stopped in time for us heading home

Good point, Rod :)
Fantastic video Ian. Lovely to meet you both in Helsinki and enjoy the rest of your amazing trip 😊
Thank you, again, Enda. The weather isn't great here in Lofoten which is disappointing, because the scenery is spectacular. Hopefully it will clear up before we move on.

Great video Ian and Gill. Really enjoyed this one. ...Rod.
Thank you, Rod. Your encouragement is providing motivation to continue the production :)
The elevator in Warsaw looks terrible. This is a temporary situation. The elevator is secured while tenants move in. It must be a new building.
Yes, that sounds likely. Everything else was very nice.
Great views as always and blue sky’s galore!!
This week has been a bit more inclement, but still mostly dry when we've been travelling
Great video editing Ian and Gill. The composition gets better with every episode! 👍
Thanks for the encouraging words, Rod. Still much to learn :)
Great info & footage looks like you both are having a great trip . Safe travels & keep up the good work . Regards Robert
Thank you, Robert. It has been an amazing experience. We're heading to Estonia this morning.
Ian and Gill, Really enjoyed (if that is the right word) this episode. The use of silence in the camp was very appropriate. The horror is unimaginable, but important to be aware of. ...Rod & Linda.
Thank you, Rod. We also had a walking tour in Warsaw which highlighted the conditions in the biggest Jewish ghetto. As you say, unimaginable. Kind regards to you both.
By the way your video also as always has a lot more positive clips!!
Thank you!
That must have been traumatic! It’s a trip myself and Juliana have still to do!!
I would thoroughly recommend it. Interestingly, it apparently gets more visitors than either Krakow or Warsaw
Thanks for sharing. I would like to visit Auschwitz myself one day - it's an important reminder as to how evil people can be and these places should never be forgotten.
Agreed, Colin It's also a salutary warning against indifference from those not immediately involved.
Great to watch this episode Ian, we were in Krakow last year and watching this brought back good memories, you have captured it well. Safe travels for you and your wife.

Yes, some of them are to try to keep the length of the videos down :)
Might not have been an easy decision but it was the right one. Cream first every time 🤣 Michael J (Cobam)
The consistency of the cream made it a fairly obvious choice :)
