The wire going to the black common screw is coming from an 14/2 power source?

@alijordanx8954 yes. On one of the 3 way switches, the wire going to the black common screw is coming from a 14/2 power source. On the other 3 way switch , the black common screw is coming from the light.

Very nice job explaining the steps in this video. So the ground wire does not need to be connected at the outlet or the box? Why do you not cut it in the outlet box? Is that in case you need it for a future 4-prong? Appreciate it!

For those who think this is easy, you should know that the old NEMA 10 series plugs like this one have been illegal for new installations since about 1996 in the US. Appliances built before then were designed for buildings that did not have a dedicated ground circuit, so they used the neutral wire to carry ground faults. It will work, but it is potentially dangerous because the frame of the appliance may have some voltage on it caused by the imbalanced 120V loads. The NEMA 10 series were replaced with NEMA 14 series which have 4 wires, or NEMA 6 series which have three wires but no neutral (in those the third wire is a ground, not neutral). You don't want to be using a NEMA 6 plug on an appliance that runs some 120V circuits since the ground wire would end up carrying the unbalanced load back to the panel which is also illegal. NEMA 6 plugs are designed for appliances that don't require the use of 120V circuits to power oven lights, accessory plugs, or circuit boards. To tell which plug your appliance requires, check the wiring diagram and installation manual for the appliance. If it is a relatively new appliance, you probably don't want NEMA 10 receptacles! If the appliance supports a dedicated ground wire the most versatile and safest option is to use a NEMA 14 plug and receptacle AND be sure any ground/neutral bonding strap inside the appliance is removed. The 4 wire configuration of the NEMA 14 series is the direction almost all new appliances are moving to, and older plugs may be flagged during home inspections.

Very clear and concise, you would make a good instructor at a trade school. Just my opinion, for a 100% complete guide to 3 light testers you need a total of 8 outlets. In addition to the 6 shown here, there is a condition where only the red light is lit. Ideal is the only manufacturer I'm aware of that lists this problem, but it is called hot on neutral with hot open. It simply means a hot/neutral reverse with an open neutral. The last condition is where all 3 lights are lit, usually with one light brighter than the other two. This occurs when the outlet is connected to 240V or something considerably more than 120V, either the result of a lost neutral on a multiwire branch circuit or possibly at the panel or the utility connection to the building, or the wrong outlet was installed, for example a standard 120V/ 15 or 20A duplex outlet could have been mistakenly installed for a larger window air conditioner that requires a single 240V/20A outlet.

That was good and to the point. Question: If I take the bare ground wire and clip it to the outlet plate (keeping it away from the two hots and common), would that not be safer? If for some odd reason one of the hot leads came loose in the box and touched the outlet plate, the presence of the ground would trip the breaker, and otherwise (absent the ground), the plate would be energized at 110V were someone (child) to touch the plate (I know, this is a really unlikely scenario). I did clip my ground to the plate, and I"m wondering if there's any specific danger I'm missing by doing this. I have a 3 wire outlet.

No, you need a 4 wire receptacle attaching the ground wire to the ground contact on the receptacle. Then use a 4 wire power cord, designed for this purpose, and attach the wires to the appliance per the instructions. The ground and neutral wires will be separated. The neutral wire connects to the neutral on the appliance and the ground wire connects to the metal frame.

Violation of NEC 250.140(B) that allows 3 wire says "... if an equipment grounding conductor is not present in the outlet or junction box...". So that section doesn't apply, you have to use a a four wire receptacle in compliance with 250.140(A), and change the cord per appliance manufacturers instructions.
