Los Angeles Metro Regional Connector: One Year Later | Is it still as nice as it was?
June 16th, 2023, the Light Rail system in Los Angeles was changed, when the A, E, and L lines were merged into just the A and E lines, through a downtown tunnel with three new stations. They opened with tons of ambassadors and staff, loads of riders, and shiny new stations, but is it still the same? Make sure to watch this comprehensive video on what's changed since its opening, if any. Stick around for a brand new regional connector train compilation, filmed just yesterday of this video's upload (June 21st, 2024!) Related videos to the regional connector will be linked down below.

    When I visited LA 12 months ago, the metro seemed to have an air of decay about it. The random men screaming at passengers on the Red Line (idk what they're calling it now) and trying to kick the carriage doors in didn't help. I'm glad things seem to be improving and that there is an effort to encourage good behaviour.

    The stations look great. Strange to see some of the lights off. I rode through there last month and they were all on. Seems like a tripped circuit, or maybe the LED bulbs are beginning to go out. At a university, I used to work at would turn off half of the lights in all the hallways during the summer to save money and keep the hallways cooler, but they were fluorescent lights back then, not LEDs.

    The Regional Connector tunnel still looks clean a year after opening to the public. It's still a shame that the Siemens P2000's never sought the chance of running under the new subway tunnel during revenue service on the A Line (Blue). Shortly before the RC tunnel opened, all P2000's running the A Line and briefly the former L Line (Gold) (north branch only) were pulled out of service for refurbishment. Now all newly refurbished P2000's that are back in service are exclusively running the C Line (Green). Still, no one bothered taking a picture or filming a video of a refurbished P2000 test train running the A Line under the RC tunnel for the time they were being tested. Well, there's a high chance that some of the P2000's will run the K Line instead once the future LAX/Metro Transit Center station opens and the C and K lines get connected.

    Great video! I’m glad that the LA Metro rail line is improving in some ways. I like the idea of making the metro stations clean, working to expand more metro stations around the LA area to help people like me get to places when I visit LA, and I like on how they announce of where the rails system is going to and it is helpful, the metro staff are helpful when the tap card machine has glitches. Here are some of the things that I had wished the the LA Metro could do is put public restrooms in the metro stations to help passengers if they need to go to the bathroom before riding the rail system, also they need to update the gate to read the tap card better when you swipe, and I wish that people who bring in bicycles into the metro to be extra mindful of other people the reason I say this is when I rode the metro rail system I would deal with people hitting me with a bicycle when they were riding the metro, also the metro cops including law enforcement are usually okay but they need to bring a social worker with them to help them deal with different situations, and many others. Much as the LA metro can be long to travel to places, however I like the fact that I don’t have to worry about dealing with traffic, being worried about finding a place to park or pay for expensive parking, and it helps me save from using Uber or Lyft on some of my trips.

    • @mrxman581
      @mrxman581 День тому

      They are doing some of the things you suggest. They've installed bathrooms just outside the entrance to a few stations. I think you need a valid TAP card to use it. It's a pilot program. There are social services workers that make their rounds on the network to reach out to passengers who look like they might need help. I've seen some at the end of the lines where everyone has to get off. BTW, LA Metro decided from its inception not to have public restrooms or eateries in the stations to reduce maintenance costs and security issues. Not sure if you know this, but the LA Metro originally had no fare gates at all. It was all on the honor system. After several years of increasing fare evasion, they retrofitted all the subway stations with fare gates. Some of the older LRT stations still have no gates, only fare validators. Can't wait for the LAX People Mover to open next year. That will be another huge milestone for the LA Metro.

    The streets around the airport are ridiculously dangerous. All of them are street-highways with driveways and 45 mph speed limits. It's weird how driving and buses has been the only way to get to the airport for so long but they designed it to be so horrible for cars and buses. It makes no sense to me. I'm so glad the People Mover is coming. But disappointing that it will not open until late 2025.

      It's the horseshoe design. Back when it was first conceived and built, it worked really well. The whole idea was to make the distance between the terminal entrance and the boarding gate as short as possible. However, they miscalculated how well this design would work increasing the use of the airport much faster than anticipated. In 1984 they added the upper deck and the TBIT, it helped for a time, but it wasn't nearly enough. And then the added security after the attack in NYC, only exacerbated the problems. So, this latest attempt is to decentralize the traffic in the horseshoe to other areas away from it. That is what the APM will help do.

    Metro needs Platform Edge/Screen Doors (PEDs/PSDs) at every light rail platform (subway be included ideally) at least so incidents like this can be prevented in addition to sealing loopholes at surface light rail stations where there are only validators and PSDs with fare gates and turnstiles can help close such loopholes. Stations such as Expo/Crenshaw would benefit with full height PSDs to not only provide rail safety but also better regulate platform ambient temperatures.

      @@TigerRailfan At-grade stations such as Farmdale would need fare gates such as the ones used at stations with direct subway connections and grade-separated stations to work as I already mentioned. PEDs/PSDs cannot work with validators. PEDs must work alongside with fare gates and turnstiles to be effective at stations such as Farmdale so physical fare control boundaries are well defined in addition to providing passenger safety since it would be technically impossible IMO to use track intrusion sensors at such at-grade stations with vehicles (cars, buses, trucks, etc.) that can easily access track areas and can mess up the track intrusion sensors. There are LRT/tram systems with both fare gates/turnstiles and PEDs such as the 🇧🇷 Baixada Santista VLT, 🇨🇴 #TranvíadeAyacucho, and 🇹🇷 #EsTram.

    Hi Tiger Railfan, I wanted to sat that I enjoy your youtube coverage of the California rail system including the bus system. Also on your UA-cam Page I like on how you cover the LA Metro Rail line. Your videos that cover the LA Metro Rail line helps me out when I do solo traveling to LA and it helps expand me on learning more about where the LA Metro can go to different places. I use the LA Metro Rail line to help save money while reduce waiting for traffic. However I wish the the LA bus transit could improve on helping people know what time they come and at the LAX airport I wish that they could have a thing to say what time the buses will come.

    Cool video. Many different types of buses and shuttles. The traffic is much better ever since private vehicles now are required to pick up passengers at the outer islands. You don't get caught in that inner horseshoe with cars, shuttles, and buses all trying to come in and out of that inner ring, closest to the terminal buildinds.
