    Great info. What’s your opinion on closed cell foam as insulating material? I’m building my sauna in the garage of my house that’s currently under construction and walls are going to be sprayed with open cell foam as typical in Texas, however I can just tell the guys to spray closed cell foam where the sauna will be. That’s a vapor barrier in itself but not sure it’s ok for sauna. What do you think?

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater День тому

      Hey Andrea! I have not seen closed cell foam to be used as an insulation material in the projects I have been involved with. Based on my understanding, it doesn't withstand the heat very well and can release toxic chemicals to the air when heated (?). I'm not sure since it's not really used in Finnish sauna construction, based on my understanding.

    I have a barrel sauna (Thermory No. 62), and I love it. But I have experienced the issues mentioned by Veeti in this video. To overcome the cold feet, I closed an intake vent that was close to the floor at the front of the sauna and added intake vents behind my HUUM Hive 13 wood burning stove. I also added a “humidity release” vent high on the front wall. So the airflow is now back to front, low to high. It’s a noticeable improvement. I can literally feel the steam circulating and engulfing my body now. It’s a great feeling! I have used fans as well, running them under the benches from front to back. But I haven’t needed them since adjusting my ventilation. The radiant heat issue is real. The stove can get really hot and uncomfortable to sit next to. So I built a deflector out of the leftover staves, and lined one side w heat resistant metal to block the radiant heat. I stand it in front of the stove once it gets to the temp I desire. Problem solved. I am also going to order the heat deflectors made by HUUM for my stove and add them to the sides so the radiant heat is less of a problem for my feet when lying down. Temps are now in the 20-30degF and it takes about an hour to get my sauna to 180F. No problem. I plan my evening around this, and add wood to the stove after half an hour and once again right before I shower and then enter the sauna. My sessions usually last about and hour, but often longer, staying in the sauna 20min or so, then cooling off outside for 5-10, then back inside for 15min or so, cool off again, and then 10 min inside for my last time inside. I drink A LOT of water before, during and after my sessions. And probably my favorite part is my final cooling off outside. I wear a robe and a big towel over my head and shoulders. Very uncovered at first but covering up as I cool off. It’s amazing to me that I can sit on my deck couches for so long, even w temps in the teens. It’s sublime, especially when it’s snowing and you feel the flakes landing and melting on your skin. It’s a great experience that ends up taking about 2 hours in the evening. And it’s one of those things that I do and cannot wait to do it again as soon as I’m showering before going to bed. I hope you’ll have similar experiences!! By the way, Veeti helped me adjust my ventilation layout. He is a great resource!!! Thank you, Veeti!!

    If using a saunum air 7 or 10 is the venting still the same (one behind the heater, two in the far wall?)

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 2 дні тому

      When it comes to Saunum heaters, you need to follow the specific guidelines found in the manual. For these heaters, it's essential to get the intake correctly placed so the over heating sensor (UL mandated) on the bottom of the heater gets cooled down.

    How would the wall insulation be done on a concrete wall?

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 2 дні тому

      To put it short, you can either a) not insulate at all (in which case you will need a massive amount of extra thermal power) or b) build a layer on top of the concrete wall (inside the sauna room), which has insulation materials, vapour barrier, and the internal cladding Option A requires a huge heater and makes for a dysfunctional sauna since the heat comes from one direction only. Option B eats away your sauna space and is difficult to construct. Concrete wall is not the easiest one to use. I'm sure you will figure it out.

    I have a Huum 10.5 sauna heater. We drilled a hole under the heater through the wood for all the wires. There is a small gap around the conduit . My electrician said I need to seal the hole due to water getting in. What would you recommend I use, obviously I don’t want any off gassing.

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 5 днів тому

      I would recommend high-temperature Silicone Sealant. With this model, your sauna heater won't be super hot from the bottom, and the heat rises so it shouldn't be too hot in there.

    Hi Veeti, I'm planning to build a 3x3x2,5m outdoor sauna next year. Using proper insulation, mechanical ventilation and a HUUM Hive 18. You said that a good sauna will take longer to cool down. With 240kg of stone mass in the Hive 18 this will be the case in my design. But does a sauna need to cool down to ambient temperature after every single use? Or do I only need to remove the moist air? What is your recommended procedure after finishing a sauna session? Greetings from Germany, Tim

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 6 днів тому

      I recommend just opening your drying vent on the ceiling or high up on the wall and letting the ventilation run for a while after finishing a sauna session! There's no reason the sauna should cool down to ambient temperature after every use, there's no reason the sauna should cool down quickly. I just used that as a question since someone was wondering why it doesn't cool down, but it does not matter!

    Great video! You got me worried about my window. I’m building sauna in my basement, the room has two windows of which one I plan to incorporate into the sauna. I would prefer if it looks like other windows from the outside, should it be a special kind of window or can I use the existing one?

    • @MIRSTROY

      No need for any special windows if it's not large. I'm a builder.

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 6 днів тому

      You can use the existing one, your normal window. As long as there are no expandable gases in between if it's a double or triple-pane window. Only reason saying that is sometimes when heated certain gases in between window layers can expand and cause it to break, but this is unlinkely.

    • @olimarghe
      @olimarghe 6 днів тому

      @@thesaunaheaterwill steam cover the window facing outside (due to humid and hot temperature inside the sauna on 1 side of the window and cold temperature from outside on the other side of the window), or will the window the window stay clear offering a nice view outside from inside the sauna? does single or double glazing influence this?

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 6 днів тому

      @@olimarghe This depends on the sauna. In some saunas windows get foggy when you throw water to the heater (make löyly), in others, it won't happen. It depends on the ventilation and how the löyly moves around. If you put your window right above your heater it's obviously guaranteed to fog when making löyly, If the window is on an opposite wall, not necessary. But you can see out from Haljas Saunas very well as an example and they're fully glass - thesaunaheater.com/products/single-glass-sauna So truly can't tell, it depends so much on the sauna and löyly movement inside.

    Thanks for the info. Can I add two additional construction details for your consideration. When using western red cedar 316 stainless steel nails/brads should be used to prevent corrosion (cedar contains a substance that reacts with steel and even galvanized nails), and the last horizontal lining board just under the ceiling lining should a have a 3mm or 1/8inch gap to let any moisture escape.

    Thank you ! I was framing my outdoor sauna today. Re clearance around the stove. Do you know what thickness of stone is needed to reduce the clearance between the wall and the stove? Thank you

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 9 днів тому

      Does not need to be thick, I think brands don't have any official guidelines on it. It's not that the wood could really burn, this is more UL-mandated (talking about safety distances), getting wood to really burn would mean you need the stove crazy hot and crazy long. Any basic thickness of stone wall works. but I DO NOT KNOW since I think there are no guidelines on this.

    • @MIRSTROY
      @MIRSTROY 8 днів тому

      Just don't put any wood around the stove. Better use a non flammable sheet of sheet rock painted with a heat proof paint or a stainless steel panel behind which is just rockwool, never risk it.

    This is timely because we will start the vapour barrier and clad the interior walls this week (indoor sauna). However I was not aware of leaving a gap between the vapour barrier and cedar cladding. We have some thinking to do…

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 9 днів тому

      I think you will be fine without the small cap for ventilation with properly treated internal cladding, and if you don't sauna like crazy, every day. Depends how difficult it is to do in your case if you should do it or not.

    • @loriwht
      @loriwht 9 днів тому

      @@thesaunaheater Thanks, Veeti. Our issue would be losing the extra 1" of space. We're using Western Red Cedar (Grade "A and Better") T&G and it's kiln-dried but I'm not sure to which moisture%. Since cedar does not suffer warping issues like other species I'm thinking we may be okay - but we'll continue to weigh our options before we start on the walls this Wednesday. We plan to add a drip-edge baseboard along the walls which will provide a small gap at the base of the wall cladding in case any moisture runs down the vapour barrier (since there is some inherent laxity in the vapour barrier paper itself). Veeti, as always you've provided excellent information and great advice!! Thank you.

      In your ceiling, between the vapor barrier and the internal cladding, you do need to have little space for air circulation so the ceiling wood dries effectively after sauna going! Thanks Weeti for the valuable information. If I go further by adding factors of relevance to each of the five categories, cedar could become my best choice, as I believe the ability to absorb/release moisture is very important, yet aroma/aesthetic appeal likely is my last consideration.

      Thank you for the comment! It's very opinion based which wood to use, and any of these woods mentioned will work well in your build.

    I am not sure how accurate this is, but according to fast search, Finnish forest 50% pine, 30% spruce and 17% birch. Some might find reason why certain woods are selected.. well it fits the use and resin is only extra bonus you get..

    Thank you for this information, my sauna will be delivered this week. I’m looking for the best company to buy ventilation fans. I need at least 2. Any thoughts?

      I know people who use Fantech fans and are happy with them, but we're personally in the middle of testing different options so we don't officially endorse any brand at this time. Make sure the fan can handle the rapidly changing heat, and humidity conditions and you will be golden.

    Want to get Aspen, but worried about it getting dirty.

      Because of sweat it's recommended to spray sitting platforms with water after every use of sauna. And wash sauna weekly to monthly depending how often you use it... There are products made for washing saunas, that won't release volatile chemicals. As of how badly USA laws are written regarding chemicals, those product are probably better to avoid (meaning USA products, if not clear).. Which ever wood is bad choice, if maintenanced poorly.

      I would say no need to wash weekly, or even monthly, I wash my saunas a few times a year as high temperature kills bacteria so the sauna (if built properly and heated enough) kills bacteria automatically. Aesthetically, the more you wash the nicer the Aspen stays but I wouldn't worry too much about that and just enjoy my sauna. It stays pretty white in anycase.

    I just bought an 8x8x8.5 outdoor sauna. What specific fans do you recommend for my mechanical ventilation.

    • @thesaunaheater

      We don't currently have specific recommended fan manufacturers for saunas. Just ensure that the fan you get can handle heat, humidity, and rapidly changing temperatures and you will be golden.

    Is it okay if my sauna is made out of stone and not wood?

    • @thesaunaheater
      @thesaunaheater 20 днів тому

      Yes that is okay, you just need MUCH larger sauna heater to heat up that thing and you need to cover the benches with wooden blanks because stone gets way too hot to sit in when heated.
