    New to me. Basically the same theme as their (with The Sparkletones) previous big hit Black Slacks, with a slightly slower tempo. Doesn’t have the multi-color ABC-Paramount label, so very probably not a US pressing, and off-centered, not rare in 78s.

  • @TwilightZoneX

    Great music! I like seeing the needle/arm sway while playing. I am very curious how this was produced that way or if that was 'ok' at the time?

    • @sopaman1234
      @sopaman1234 5 днів тому

      Most likely that is the way it was pressed at the plant

    • @rickyf243
      @rickyf243 5 днів тому

      Actually, there should be no swaying at all of the tone arm while playing in a properly pressed record. Unfortunately, quality control was not a top priority in record pressing plants.

      It's a cover of Rock & Roll Angel by Webb Dixon, with a slightly modified title. The original had been released on the Mobile, Alabama based Astro label. Judd Records owner Jud Phillips had heard the song during a visit to Mobile and suggested it to Smith's manager, who agreed it would be a good choice for Smith.

    I'm aware of half a dozen different versions of this song, including one in French. The Everly Brothers' take is the most popular, while Gene Vincent's interpretation is my personal favourite. However, this is the original. The songwriters were England in late 1959 for Shuman to cut a record for Decca. They had planned to travel to Germany to offer It's Been Nice to Elvis Presley but after meeting Wilde, decided to offer it to him. A weekly UK trade paper interview with the songwriters took place the day after Wilde's recording session. That issue is dated November 14 but it doesn't state exactly when the interview took place. There is a extant photo of Wilde in the recording studio, dated October 28, so that may be the session date. The session almost certainly took place at Philip's in-house studio in London. Wildcats personnel at the time were "Big Jim" Sullivan on lead guitar, Tony Belcher on rhythm guitar. Brian "Licorice" Locking on bass and Brian Bennett on drums. Originally, It's Been Nice was intended as the A-side. The matrix number for It's Been Nice has the 1H suffix, while Bad Boy has the 2H suffix. This is further supported by an contemporary article in a UK trade paper, highlighting It's Been Nice over Bad Boy. Reportedly, there was an issue with the song's publisher, resulting in a change in marketing. This may be the reason why the USA release on the EpIc label has Teenage tears replacing It's Been Nice. It would have been interesting to see how the song would have fared, had it received the marketing push of an A-side. Regardless, the release was late November, 1959. Gene Vincent undoubtedly became familiar with the tune through Wilde. The record was Marty's current release when Gene arrived in England in early December to be "guest artist" on some tour dates headlined by Wilde and appear on the Boy Meets Girls TV show hosted by Wilde. The Wildcats even performed as Gene's back-up band during this time. While Gene's recording is more restrained and polished, it has a memorable piano arrangement. Ironically, the Wilde version was to have piano accompaniment, played by Mort Shuman himself. However, just as they set to roll the tape, a musician's union representative had Schuman removed.
