A simple, yet beautiful tune and my personal favourite of Rick's ballads. It's another Nelson recording that almost never happened, as Rick rescued the tune when Baker Knight was contemplating a final resting place for it in his wastebasket. Speaking of which, Rick's uncanny ability to find the right tunes may be his most underappreciated talent. Be it Baker Knight., the Burnettes, Jerry Fuller, Dave Burgess or numerous other songwriters, Rick had an almost infallible instinct in song selection. Most artists of the era, at least those who weren't songwriters, had A&R men select and bring them songs to record. Rick spent his spare time seeking out songwriters, listening to songs and then going back to Haskel with those that he wanted to record and release. Rick knew what he liked, the sound he wanted and believed in the songs. Of course, Rick didn't select all the songs but a high percentage of hits were personal selections. I think his belief in those songs comes across in the recordings and is one of the intangibles that helped to make them hits.
