I'm not interested in AF, video, ISO... just the image and colors. I have the 5D Classic and plan to buy the 5D Mark III. The 5D classic is a great camera too, but the 5D3 is generally speaking a bit closer to modern cameras when it comes to the image output, usability and AF performance compared to the 5DC, but hey if you don’t care about all that then the OG 5D is absolutely the way to go!

    • @rudermanphoto

Unsure, tbh i think im going to sell this lens and just keep the 28-70 as its size advantage and near identical performance just makes it an overall far more appealing lens, i dont want anything even bigger haha Plus honestly id probably just get the Lumix 24-105 instead, yes it’s an F4 but it’s smaller, has IS for video and the extra 4mm on the wide end is really nice too. It’s cheaper as well.

Right on. I'm about to try out the voigtlander 18mm pancake for fuji. I have fujis 27mm pancake and while I find the inage quality ok enough, I go for a pancake I want low key, poasibly indoors and somewhere I am right in the middle of the action and don't want to impose. I would rather have this over a GoPro. I mean, the GoPro is great and all, but it's ultra-small size means it's more susceptible to getting lost more easily, so I'm rolling back to compact cameras as an alternative for when I don't want to use a cheap, very low quality, action camera.

  • @plagueofkoalas

F2 being soft is a huge plus. I've started to not like that all the Fuji lenses are so damn sharp. I got the Voigtlander 35 f1.2 and sold my XF35 f1.4. It's quite amusing that so many people stress out over perfect lense IQ and then put glimmerglass or blackmist filters on to make them more "film like" and softer. Only lenses I want tack sharp are my wildlife and super wide landscape lenses. Everything in between does not need to be razor sharp, in fact it's a minus

There is so much reason to pick the 5D III, It is one of the last Canon DSLRs that support Magic Lantern that is modern, I never picked it up when it was new as I was quite literally 5 years old but shot on two 5D III and image quality is still up there today, Autofocus on 5D III is fine, for 90% of work DSLR older AutoFocus does the trick, Honestly was an unexpected surprise how good they are coming from Sony Mirrorless, they don't make Cameras like they used to, the flippy and OLED Screens make them so much more delicate, I appreciated its Tank like body and by far has photo battery life better than a majority of Mirrorless Cameras, it has no Battery Anxiety and its something thats not really been matched, I think the DSLR platform is harder for beginners and the weight for alot of people who are less able bodied than me is definitely a point of contention, overall great video and a Camera that has come and go from my life when my Sony was just not having it!

That pop-out diffuser on the large speedlight at 4:52 is the wide angle diffuser that, when deployed, automatically sets your flash's zoom to 14mm (basically, an ultra wide spread of light); you can't change the zoom until you retract that diffuser. At least that's how it was on the original Canon 600 EX-RT. i had mine for 10 years and it only just gave up the ghost a few months ago. Loved that speedlight to death. It was a real workhorse. But since I got my m11, the lighter weight and overall better sensor (just needs a bit more work in the post) made me not picking up my m9 for a whole year. That being said, I do think my m10p and md262 (essentially m240) did not manage to triumph the m9. Espeically the m10, even though the body is fantastic, the color simply isn't there.

The only thing holding me back from buying it right now are problems with shooting with strobes.

Shoot manual mode with flash and there is no issues, just TTL has problems.

Bought the M9 in 2024, because I was bored by the perfection of my Sony A1. Shooting the M9 is definitely more fun and the colors right out of camera are lovely - much closer to the analog film experience. But to be honest, the results of the A1 are technically so much better and in dynamic sceneries or at really low light, where you get lost with the M9, nothing can currently beat the A1 (ok, may be the A1 Mk2). So I would recommend the M9 only for the joy of taking the photo, if you can afford it beside another, more up-to-date camera.

Ofcourse, my S5ii is leaps and bounds better then the M9 technically speaking but I have a lot of fun shooting with the M9! I wouldn’t do any professional work with the M9 for that very reason though.

Thanks for the comparison. I think in the future it would be better to be a bit more careful with comparing like for like, particularly stuff like checking the focus point with manual focusing and also comparing depth of field/bokeh at the same focal length, as that makes a massive difference. The image detail comparison wasn't very convincing tbh. In terms of bokeh: a full frame f/2 50mm lens would have a similar DoF as an f/1.4 33mm APS-C lens with the same framing/distance to subject. And the full frame cameras seem to have about 2 stops better ISO performance. So I guess you balance this out with the size of the cameras and lenses for equivalent DoF and the required shutter speed/ISO. If you could get a small FF body and an f/2 equivalent lens that is also small, it seems like it would beat APS-C by 1 stop (ignoring sensor resolution etc.) because of the ISO performance compensating. You also have stuff like zooms for wildlife photography being decent in good light when on cropped sensors (smaller cropped sensor, smaller lenses, etc).

Had both this and the Voigtlander 35mm f1.5. Kept the latter. The Zeiss sold.. bad construction quality for Zeiss, way too much focus shift, etc.

I have an M9 and several other Leica cameras. Whenever people look at my photos, they always seem to like, or notice the colours of the M9 more so than the other Digital Leicas I have.

Some nice photos. Re M9 these have retained as much value as they have not just because of having Leica on them but because if you can afford it these are very low risk. If it breaks Leica will sell you a new camera at a very, very significant discount. If you are buying this because it's "cheap" that's like buying an old BMW. Good luck to you. Re color it's just Kodak's interpretation, it's not hard to LUT into it if you like it with a more modern body but to each their own. IMO this camera is the body equivalent of the 35mm v4. Folks can take that statement however they like.

    • @rudermanphoto
      @rudermanphoto 13 днів тому

You can absolutely get a modern camera to have somewhat similar colours but the M9 makes it so effortless - even just comparing the same preset over two different cameras the difference is pretty substationial imo. I don’t think the M9 is “cheap” either, the M8 is but an M9 is more then an M240 nowadays!

@@rudermanphoto I am a big fan of the "apply on import" feature in lightroom. I know of at least one company (Cobalt) who again are selling LUTs that Lightroom can use to effectively project whatever camera's raw output into what you'd get out of an M9. Or even better, color corrected Provia 100.

I never had a chance to test the mark 2 56 1.2 but neither had linear motors so I don’t think it would be that much better!

I’m a late comer to the whole Canon DSLR ecosystem. I love the output of the Canon 5D Classic paired with my Olympus OM Zuiko lenses and Super Takumar M42 lenses. Have had the Mark II off the back of the Classic, and while amazing, I just prefer the simplicity of the Classic more and result of the 12mp sensor is more that enough. Suits the older manual lenses more in my humble opinion. Just purchased the Nikon D700 to pair with the 5D, and that is an amazing camera. It’s beefier and chunkier than the 5D, and the low light performance is a bit better. The whole menu system on the 5D Classic is so nice and simple to use which I love. The Nikon D700 menu is too convoluted to me. I would urge anyone to consider the older DSLRs if starting out. You can pick them up cheap, and the things that made them great and flagship cameras all them years ago, still make them great today.

The 5d Classic is the one camera I really regret selling, I had such a minty perfect example that I sold to fund the Mark 3 and the person who bought it off me broke it a month later by somehow trying to shove an SD card into the CF slot and bending the pins :( Someday I’ll get another one!
