Wicked is a spectacular realization of the stratospherically popular stage musical, based on a book, based on a movie, based on a totally different book. And yet, it's somehow still quite good! Though _many_ of you are going to disagree with Alan's rating. Maybe even Alan disagrees with his own rating. Who knows. Support us! Not going to spoil it, but the awkward thing that happens when Mr Reed asks Sister Barnes how her father died is the biggest laugh i've had to any movie in 2024. 😄
Every so often Alan has a hard miss and this is one of them
The girl that looks naive was sweating from when the was setting in the beginning like she know that something was wrong. Someone that talked about this movie said she was just acting naive and nice to get out of a bad situation that is something that women do.
I agree with them both about the timing. I loved the film, but I dozed off a couple of times while watching, and it caught me by surprise.
I very much appreciate the lack of spoilers, as I hate spoilers. My wife doesn't care about spoilers and said she'd like more spoiler segments. So, I guess as long as they're very clearly marked at the end like this one so I can skip them? Or maybe even a secondary video she can watch without me?
You two were kinder to this movie than other critics have been.
** Spoiler ** I really enjoyed this movie! I just kept thinking how absolutely gorgeous everything was, the animation was fabulous! It is definitely a feel good movie that teaches so many lessons on parenting and community. However, as much as I wanted to love this film, I can only really LIKE it. There were some things that didn’t quite fit. #1- The “wild robot “ doesn’t stay wild! While there are some logical points made for her decision, it felt like a slap in the face to the wildlife that worked so hard to save her. I understand her reasoning, but even my kids were bothered by the ending. #2- it did feel like multiple endings, but I was glad when it continued.
10/10 for me
I agree with Alan 100%. I loved the movie at first but then it felt like it was dragging and Bloated. Couldn't enjoy the last 30 min because I was getting restless. I've been telling people.." it's bloated! But it's good!. " I hate that that is the final impression I walked away with,🤷.😂
Yeah I agree. Spoilers at the end was nice for this one. I was on the fence and your info on the series really helps set expectations
The movie was a 9/10 for me. I completely bought in and loved every delicious second. So many themes and messages being explored … the one that made me bawl for the last hour was the unbearable weight of power with morality. How it tears you away from people you love and respected. The duty in your heart for others. The isolation. There is truly only one devastating path forward.
Suffering through Les Miz???? I hope you mean the heart breaking plot and nothing else.
I'm no where near a professional film maker but I thought there was no dragging moment at all and we needed all of that.
My view is that Paxton is fawning, not less smart. Her way to survive is to not challenge Reed, at first.
Does nobody watch late night TV? Ariana Grande is always displaying her amazing character actor talent on late night talk shows!!! ❤❤❤ Look up her work on Jimmy Fallen!
Yea for breaking reviews into a "non-spoiler" half and "spoiler" half. Honestly would've preferred this as a TV show. Raya and the Last Dragon is also a movie that I thought would've worked much better as a TV show. But I think the production backstory (which NPR's PCHH also went into) just shows how much of a disaster Chapek's tenure was and how we're going to be feeling the effects of his mistakes for quite a while.
Absolutely loved this movie but I think it easily could have been a three and a half hour film with a intermission
You guys are lostttttt
I like the spoiler free until the end format. I was not a fan of this movie. I loved the first film. Moana is just as charming in the sequel as the original film. The sidekicks were more annoying than endearing. I might have pushed them off the boat. My biggest hang up was the “everyone in peril” element. I think it’s too scary for the younger viewers. Just my opinion. Live the channel.
Good format for sure! Love your thoughts and then spoiler thoughts :)
Yes! I love the spoilers at the end!
A 5/10 is crazy …I just feel like it might not have been for the guy on the left because I thought the pacing was completely fine considering the “side stories” set up relevant moments for part 2. And even without the “padding” I never once felt there was too much bloat. So gotta agree to disagree I guess lol. But it just totally feels like it’s not for him, especially if he is checking his watch constantly 🥴
2hrs40min with no 3-D creativity Poor writing/pacing/character & relationship development Like eating an entire brick of birthday cake-flavored fudge
But Elphaba didn’t invite her wheelchair-bound sister to Oz even when Elphaba said it was her fault her sister couldn’t walk

LOL YAY the professional movie director said (almost) the exact same thing I said afterwards: "Give me an afternoon and a digital copy, and I could take out thirty minutes that the movie wouldn't suffer for losing." And actually, the places he would cut are the same places I would cut (which I wasn't expecting). Just shorten a few scenes and cut the pyrotechnics in DG. That's it. I adore the stage show, but it DOES feel rushed, so the story needs at least another 30-40 minutes to develop and breathe. I was thrilled the movie gave it some time. But not an extra 70. The editor in me easily admitted that. However, as a fan I didn't really notice the run time as I was watching it because of how caught up I was in the story. I felt just like I did as a smol, cynical 17-year-old who had her heart totally melted and brought alive by the stage show when I saw it for the first time. I was right back in that feeling for the whole thing. I was similarly blown away by Ariana Grande. I was VEHEMENTLY opposed to her casting as Galinda, but she totally won me over. I knew Jonathan Bailey was going to be phenomenal (he has an Olivier for Company AND Y'ALL NEED TO WATCH FELLOW TRAVELERS), but he actually made me care about Fiyero for the first time ever. Spongebob...was there. Marissa Bode was cute and really held her own, considering it was her first-ever film role. I think all the songs slap, but that's just me as a former theater kid. Nessarose, Boq, and Fiyero have important roles to play in Part 2. They're the ones who are kind of mid-arc at the end of Part 1.
The graphics were great BUT… It sucked! It tried too hard to capture magic moments from the first movie, it wasn’t very cohesive, and not enough characters analysis. A lot to ask from a cartoon but Disney usually nails it.
Yay
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Allan so mad at a movie 😂
The visualisations of ancient Rome were amazing. Beautiful. Acting - meh. Leading man was not engaging. Script - meh to poor. Some core characters and their motivations not properly fleshed out/clarified sufficiently. Half-baked ideas introduced then we're moving right along. I've rewatched Gladiator, but never plan to ever watch this movie again. I don't hate it, it's just not worth spending 2.5 hours of my life on it, a second time. 4/10
I agree with the ratings. They could have cut a few scenes or just made them shorter. Like Dancing through Life. My favorite song, but those scenes were way too long.
thank you for this... i'm a HUGE Wicked fan... and my skin crawls when the pacing is off... already pretty perturbed that they split it in two.... DEF gonna wait for streaming on this one... 'preciate y'all 🤎
I LOVED it, and as a dad, I also cried so much.
You need to review Last Christmas, please, because you know what you are doing.
Love this format! No spoilers and spoilers at the end.
Yay! I like this style. 👍🏻
So I haven't seen the movie yet, I really want to, though. But as someone who was recommended the book and read it a few years ago, I'm glad to know that they added the more in-depth parts of the story that had to be cut from the stage adaptation while also making nods to the 1930's film and the original books that started it all. This is a world that transcends generations and from the clips I've seen as well as the music they nailed it. This is a love letter to fans of all ages no matter how they found their way to Oz.
This movie lost me at blueberry pie. It's not a clever reveal if you have to defy reality to make it make sense. Anyone knows that if someone tells you blueberry pie is baking in their oven, it's going to be like 6 hours before you can eat it. F*** that I'm not coming into your house. Call me when it's ready.
sure, good idea
Love you guys and your film reviews! It makes sense to do a spoiler review if you're finding it difficult to justify your rating without it. Spoilers at the end of the video, or a separate video with spoilers are good options (whichever works best for your workloads)
I don't suppose Jon and Alan will do a cinematic therapeutic video on Moana 2.
Mr. Reed does not represent the other side though. You missed the point. He is the embodiment of religion itself.
He is the embodiment of religion as he sees it, with the film making the point that anybody can become a fanatic, no matter their views. He is a fanatical non-believer. We did not miss it.
Alan is wrong, he is just so wrong, firstly I never felt that the musical number pauses were a problem, they happen in the show and there are plenty of musical numbers that don’t have weird pauses. The subplots were not padding they need to happen in order for the next movie to work otherwise you are just left wondering why all these characters are making decisions that make no sense. They only thing that I can point to is new story beats that weren’t in the musical is dolcebear and the circumstances for something bad. Dolcebear helped me understand more why Elphaba is so passionate about the animals because she was raised by them, in the show she is just just kinda already compassionate and outspoken about what is happening to the animals which worked but it helped to have Dolcebear as a character. Something bad the main differences is the first half is between the animals and ellhaba at the side lines, the way the musical number was framed did feel more in place and made more sense then in the play where is was between a student and a professor but in the movie most of to was between colleagues who are apart of the same marginalized group. This movie is a 10/10 in my book, I was laughing every five minutes, the production was beautiful, the story was amazing, the actors were great, and the songs no matter the pauses worked flawlessly. Alan J hate to tell you this but you are entirely wrong, watch the second part when it comes out and tell me the “padding” wasn’t necessary in order for the story to work.
I loved the “Go Beyond” and “Get Lost” songs!!
I haven't seen it yet and won't be seeing it in the theater, but I will when it comes to home streaming. I remain dubious. The casting seems to me to be just horrifically bad. Elphaba and Galinda are college students in the source material. Elphaba is a couple of years older than most other students because she was waiting for Nessa to be ready, but that still makes for a character in her late teens and another in her early 20s being played by actresses in their early and late 30s respectively. This works fine on the stage, but on the screen, it really stands out when actors are playing characters a decade or more younger than they are. Ben Platt was in his mid twenties when he played Evan Hanson, and that was a disaster in part because he looks so much older than his character. Two hours and forty minutes just for act one of a musical that's about that length for the entire production, including intermission, set changes, and pauses for applause. Were they able to find an extra hour of material for act one without it feeling like padding? Act 2 is about an hour on stage; where are they going to find another 90 minutes of material for that without it feeling like padding? On the positive side, both leads can actually sing, and Galinda being a shallow, insensitive snob works well with Ariana Grande's public persona.
My wife and I just saw it last night. I agree that they did add a few things (my wife insists they were in the play), but I wasn't as bothered by them as Alan. A play/musical has an added layer of surrealism built into it, which lets you short-hand some things. That doesn't work as well in a movie, so they added some additional dialog in places. For the most part, I was fine with it and felt it worked. Special call out to the face acting. There were a few places where just some close ups on the actors and letting them do their thing added a lot of nuance to a scene that couldn't have existed in a play where you're 50 feet from the actors. Alan should love that. 🙂 There were a few song-interrupting additions that I thought were too much (particularly at the very end), but overall, I still thought it was great. I'd say 8/10. Do go watch.
I definitely like the idea of doing spoilers at the end of the video, especially since I am matching you guys on watching some of this big name movies during opening days. And I agree with Alan's score and would actually go a little lower. Lin-Manuel Miranda's influence on the music was missed for me, and the emotional beats just did not hit where the original Moana's did. I often found myself lost in the plot in this film, honestly. The song "Get Lost" was pretty great, though
I really enjoyed this film. I actually like most of the new songs better than the first films songs with the exception of Maui song in the 1st film.
I have the emotions of a very sensitive toddler and that's why I haven't seen this yet because I'm afraid it will put me down bad 😂😂😂
Yes at the end with an overview of everything that happened like Alan said if there's no real arc in the story
