The perfect 2 in 1 Roof Rack for a Suzuki Jimny
Have you ever had to decide between a roof rack and load bars for a Suzuki Jimny? Now you can have both at the same time. This is the first 2 in 1 roof rack and load bars designed especial for the Jimny. I managed to get my hands on the Mighty Smart Rack designed by Skinny Jim. It is a design that allows you to have the best of both worlds. You'll easily be able to transform your 22kg roof rack into 6kg load bars in a couple of minutes.
Rack is rated to 200kg.
This might be the perfect roof rack for a Suzuki Jimny.
Follow along as I go through the steps of fitting the roof rack. Since our baby joined us a few months ago I have not had the opportunity to load the roof rack up and get out. So this experience I have shared is just for urban driving.

    How is the wind noise with those boxes on top while on highways?

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 8 годин тому

      Hey. The Jimny is naturally quite noisy on the inside. I actually don’t find them too noisy. I think most noise with roof racks are generated by the wind being funnelled between the roof and the rack if one does not have a wind deflector. New Zealand speed limits are generally between 80-100 km/h and even if the speed limit is 100, I’m doing 90km by choice or much slower due to the quality and layout of the road. They might be much louder if driving 120km/h.

    How much weight can you place on the roof of a Jimny?

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 16 днів тому

      That's a difficult question to answer as Suzuki have not actually stipulated a max roof loading capacity in the owners manual. I reckon it would be wise to keep the dynamic roof loading as low as possible to keep the CoG as low as possible. The cars handling is reported to be negatively impacted with large amounts of weights loaded on the roof. That's the benefit of the Skinny Jim Smart Rack, it can convert into bars that weigh less than 6kg in a matter of minutes. How much weight would you consider loading on the roof?

    • @andreasbarragan4155
      @andreasbarragan4155 14 днів тому

      @@jonnosjimny thank you for your answer. I am considering a Maximum of 70Kg plus an Aluminium flat Roof Rack from Ironman.

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 14 днів тому

      @@andreasbarragan4155 in my opinion, I don’t think the Jimny was designed to carry that weight on the roof on a daily basis. It definitely could and many people do it. It would raise the CoG and the vehicle would not handle as well. Out of interest. What is the 70kg comprised of? And if you plan on putting that much weight on the roof, I’d say that you should try find the lightest load bars possible, instead of a rack. 30kg a widely quoted “dynamic load limit”. This number seems to be based on the Suzuki aftermarket load bars. I have not purchased the Suzuki bars, so I’m not sure where else Suzuki has officially published that number. If doing that, I’d say you’ll definitely need to upgrade suspension.

    • @beamishnz
      @beamishnz 13 днів тому

      It is a tricky question to give an absolute answer to. To the best of my knowledge Suzuki do not publish an absolute figure but rate the Suzuki own roof bars at 30kg which I believe is more to do with vehicle handling and centre of gravity than structural integrity. I have loaded the Skinny Jim Mighty Smart Rack with 50kg plus for camping trips and it has been fine but you definitely notice the additional load in terms of the vehicle handling. A lot of it comes down to common sense. You drive a little more cautiously with 50kg on the roof and avoid severe cambers if you were off road. With the vehicle stationary we have had a few adults hang out on the rack and it is rated for static load of 200kg but I personally would not drive around with much more than 50kg not because of the stength of the rack but because of the handling of the vehicle.

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 13 днів тому

      @@beamishnz spot on. I think the common sense statement is very accurate. I think if a roof top tent were the goal then the Skinny Jim load bars are best bang for buck considering design and strength to weight ratio.

    Definitely use 2 recovery points with a log bridle strap if at all possible (to reduce side load on the RPs). That RP is weaker than others available because of the unnecessary bends in it, and the little notch at the top. The best rated RPs for a stock bumper are the BEI House ones, but they are VERY expensive, 3 times the price of the cheap Chinese ones. I have a picture somewhere of a bent 8mm rear RP that was used on its own. I ended up making my own RPs, similar design, but out of 12mm thick steel. Keep up the good work. Found this after talking to Paul from Skinny Jim :)

    I ended up getting swag to see what it was like the only real advantage of a swag is it's dark inside helps you sleeping in, a proper 4 season hiking tent are pritty much storm proof plus you have the vestibules to store stuff out the way of your sleeping space, easy to dry tent at home overnight and clean I feel like a tent you don't need to have under an awning when raining I'd hate to deal with a swag in the open rain, Il keep the swag for summer camping and tent for winter weather if I had to get a double or if I had to choose I'd def just go with a tent more space takes up lil room more breathable in winter!

    I've done a lot of tent camping in my younger years, and it's miserable in bad weather. I tried a deluxe single swag last year but had breathing difficulties (allergies and asthma) on one trip so i found the swag quite claustrophobic on that trip and had to end it early. My current solution is a teardrop camper. It wins in every respect except of course price. I can take it down the beach or any reasonable softroad track. It has a kitchen. Room for the dog. An awning which is about the same size as the one I put on the Jimny. I installed solar on the roof and it runs a small fridge plus lighting just fine so is good for extended trips. Super fast setup for long trips if I need to free camp/overnight on the way - I can just pull up and roll into the camper and go to sleep. Yes, 185cm is no problem for most teardrops - the bed is essentially a standard double mattress. My last trip was a three day music festival and the camper was an absolute joy. I find it to be safer towing than it is to overload the Jimny's 20kg roof carrying capacity, but yes you need to be mindful of the limits either way. For example the tow ball weight comes off the vehicle's carrying capacity of 400kg (manual only) and is a maximum of 75kg. Most teardrops are well within the tow limits of the Jimny, but that doesn't mean you can load out the teardrop with all your gear. I limit the loadout to essential van stuff (chocks, lightweight stands etc) kitchen stuff including the fridge, and clothes and other light items. Batteries for the solar were a heavy addition. For example, the Hayman Reese tow bar is 16kg, and the tow ball weight of the camper is 35 kg. GVM is 1435 and the kerb weight is 1035 (manual). 1435-1035-16-35 leaves 349 kg. Add me and the dog and that leaves 269 kg. Also remember that *any* extras you add come off the carrying capacity, so take off another 15 kg for the roof rack, awning and shovel and that brings my carrying capacity down to 254 kg. I'd really like to put a bar and winch on the front, and I think I have the free capacity, but I haven't been stuck yet. I'll probably opt for the long range fuel tank instead. My last trip with teardrop I did 7.9 liters per 100 km, so pretty reasonable towing performance, probably because the wind drag is quite reasonable. It seems to tow better with 91 RON than it does with 98, by at least 1.5 liters per hundred km. That's pretty significant. I'm thinking the 98 is just too slow burning for the Jimny's naturally aspirated high revving engine. That extra 1.5 liters is probably just burning up the catalytic converter.

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 3 місяці тому

      Tent camping in really bad weather can be such a drag at times. I’m also a little claustrophobic in smaller spaces. I think a teardrop would be ideal. Yours sounds like a great setup. But as you say, the price is definitely on the steep side. We are looking at a camping trailer which has a rooftop tent on top. Our 5 door is an auto so I don’t want to tow more than 500kg on a regular basis. The trailer I’m looking at should be under that. That’s excluding the water tank, battery and gas cylinder. Max braked capacity in New Zealand is 950kg and unbraked is 500kg. These are different to the Australian and South African figures of 1300kg braked. Towball is the same.

    Jonno, first a shoutout, Kudo's for all your videos, I find them very informative and enjoy watching. I have recently purchased the 5 dr, but there are some advantages as well as disadvantages. The 5 dr rear seats in my model do not fold fully forward to form a flat load floor such as yours. I think Suzuki went this way to draw more for the family orientated buyer. As my wife and I are still active and are pet owners with large dogs I would have preferred the rear seat as you have shared. My reason for the 5dr purchase was for more space and we plan to do longer trips - in South Africa and to Namibia, Mozambique. However, with 3 Grandchildren the seats also may be more comfortable as Suzuki intended? Still, I think a trailer will be a future option. Please let us know of you trips and challenges, as we are not new to 4x4 and camping, I am still very fascinated by the Zook approach and challenges. p.s. I now need to go look for the Zook rule book. Luv your work and will most definitely watch all the videos. Thanks, from Peter aka “little4by4” (On South African 4x4 Forum)

      Hi Peter. Thanks for the awesome comment. Even after testing all the seating options and configurations in the 3 door, we also just sold our 3 door and bought a 5 door. With the dog and the baby we decided to future proof our Jimny (incase another baby arrives in the future). Having the 5 door allows us to keep the rear seats folded up and have our one dog in the back at all times. I made a fun video about dogs in Jimny’s, you might have seen it. I think the boot of the 5 door might only fit one large or medium size dog. You are correct, I think the biggest drawback of the 5 door is the seats that don’t fold down flat. But I’m aware that there are a few companies who are busy designing flat shelf inserts that fit over the rear seats. This will allow 5 door owners to create that flat area in the back without taking the seats out. Ive yet to see one though. We’ve really enjoyed the 5 door so far. We’ll definitely be getting a camper trailer in the future. Possibly for next summer, but we might delay camping for one season with the baby. There is a facebook page called ‘black mamba trails’. His name is Ian, he has an awesome camper trailer setup for a Jimny.

I do believe that the 3dr is superior to the 5dr. Unfortunately I needed the 5dr for the baby and dog. Since the baby has arrived, I’ve been struggling to get back into some editing. Hopefully I will get back into it soon. I wish my dog would sit up front but she doesn’t like sitting upright too much. So she prefers lying in the back. I’m jealous, I’d be very keen to do a jimny trip down south with our own car. But I’d most likely fly down and hire a Jimny from Adam at “NZJimny”. If you can, you should try meet up with them for their trips. They have info on the website.

    I have the same awning- my only advice is not to take it out in the wind. The holes for the support arms are quite fragile and have snapped on me. But for $60-80 (on sale) you can’t go wrong. Great awning.

    I just want to start by saying great video and you put out some quality content. Due to yourself and a couple other content creators, I’ve recently decided to give this automotive content creation a go - with my old blue JB43 taking centre stage. I was wondering if you might have some tips on what might get my content out there? Again, keep up the great work and congratulations on having a baby! 👍

      Thanks for the comment. Sadly I haven’t uploaded anything recently (getting ready for baby to arrive seems to require a lot of preparation than what I had anticipated). I’ve always enjoyed filming things but wasn’t sure what to film for UA-cam. I figured the Jimny might be an interesting topic. It was always pretty awkward talking to a camera and it still is. I watched your videos and the narrator voice/accent is excellent. You’ll get better as you keep making videos. If you do some research and watch videos on other channels, you’ll find what’s trending and what people might want to watch. I still haven’t quite cracked the UA-cam code. My videos are super basic and not necessarily aimed at what people are looking for but instead just random things I’m doing. There’s a lot more one could do to promote videos by using Facebook, instagram, TikTok etc. Also try linking your videos together by promoting the other videos with links and end screens in each video. There’s an Instagram channel called @overintherover (Blue Tit the Landy). She makes fantastic videos. Also a UA-cam channel called 4xoverland which has more technical content similar to yours. Your humour and storytelling skills have lots of potential. If all else fails, put on a bikini and show some skin, that seems to work. 😂

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 5 місяців тому

      Hi @stephengauden-ing9304 , thanks for the question. I definitely wish I had bought the larger base rack instead of the smaller size. Price and weight were my main considerations. A wind deflector is a must. I bought the arm rest that attaches to the seat. It looks great but it’s not as solid as I would have liked. I think an arm rest that rests in the Center cup holders is probably more solid and will provide more extra storage. Instead of the interior rear ceiling net, I’d choose a solid shelf. The net can’t carry much weight and hangs too low in the Center. I’m very happy with the rear headrest mount. I bought a shorter awning with quick release brackets. Because of the quick release brackets I think a larger awning would have been better to provide more shade. Front runner ladder is great as it gets extra support from the spare wheel mount. I don’t think all ladders do. The air vent cup holders are very flimsy. You might want to consider something a bit more solid.

      Hey! You didn’t ask me, but I want to respond- I bought mine in may 2023. It’s just me, my partner and my dogs and I have not had a single regret. No issues with it other than the factory head-unit is a bit average. Have never gotten stuck, cheap on fuel and really fun and easy to kit out with mods. Can’t go wrong

  • @SalvoDan
    @SalvoDan 6 місяців тому

    #1 mod of any off-road vehicle are *rated* recovery points so that the people rescuing you have something safe to pull on. #2 mod of any off-road vehicle (in areas where they are legal) is a UHF radio so you can call the people to rescue you. #3 mod is not really a mod, but make sure you have all the recovery gear you need, including your own shackles. Make sure your recovery points are compatible with your shackles. Round profile apertures with square edges are perfect for bow shackles and elongated apertures with rounded edges are ideal for soft shackles. Elongated and odd-shaped apertures with sharp edges are not suitable for soft shackles or bow shackles.

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for all the advice. What type of shackles do you recommend with these recovery points? I figured the soft shackles wouldn’t be ideal with the 90deg edges. Snatch strap or kinetic rope? I currently have the XTM 5T strap and XTM bow shackles. So far it’s been sufficient. But deflating tyres further and using recovery boards has done the job.

    That's one way to damage and grub up your hood lining real quick with that netting also fastening a cup holder to those delicate little vents and not being able to adjust them is a big no thank you from me. You have to be very selective as to what accessories you put on your vehicle as there's allot of crap out there.

    • @jonnosjimny
      @jonnosjimny 6 місяців тому

      Been using the netting for the past year and all good, no damage or dirt so far. These are definitely not the most practical cup/drink holders but I’m pretty sure they won’t damage the vents. Because of the lever arm and the way that they secure to the vent, the base that a drink rests on will break off long before enough force is generated to damage the vent. It can’t hold anything large or heavy, (600ml according to manufacturer) I recommend 500ml max. It’s perfect for soda cans. Having the vents open permanently is not ideal. Controlling the aircon through main controller works fine though.

    I’m considering getting the 5 door Jimny here in the Philippines. I’m originally from the United States, I bought a 1991 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2dr 4x4 manual. After my wife and daughter arrived from the Philippines, I kept the Jeep. However, when my son was born in January 1993 I wasn’t happy with trying to get my kids in back especially the car seat for my son. Plus my wife wanted to get her drivers license and didn’t know how to drive a manual. That next month, I traded in the Cherokee for another Cherokee Sport 4dr 4x4 automatic. The Jimny reminds me of the Cherokee, hence my desire for one.

      I’m also on the verge of getting the 5 door. I’m just thinking long term, 2 kids (hopefully a second one in the future) and a dog would fit better in the 5 door. I guess if it were not for the pet, the 3 door would be ideal. I did a test drive in the manual 5 door today and it was great. I haven’t driven stick for 5 years.

    Canvas seat covers would probably be the best for cleaning up dog hair & an open rear window just invites the dog hair to be blown about in the car more. Trust me I know, I used to have a husky & ended up buying a ute after 12 months as I was wasting too much time vacuuming the car out 😂

    I keep seeing people lifting the luggage box by the spring loaded flaps, and I have no idea why. It's awkward and if you have tools in there you run the risk of breaking the hinges or tipping your stuff out. Open the luggage box, and there's a handle on either side to lift it straight up. (on the outside, under the lid). Suzuki weren't stupid. I keep all the maintenance gear for track and trail in the box - 1L brake fluid, 1L oil, battery tester, jump box, puncture repair, multimeter, spare bulbs, torque wrench adapter, rags etc to stop things rattling and wipe the grime off. The 1/2" drive extendable shaft wheel-nut brace sits underneath on top of the OEM tyre equipment (I'd never want to have to rely on the OEM tool). A satchel tool kit goes under the driver's seat (3/8" and 1/4" drive and other stuff). The only thing I don't have a good permanent spot for is the air compressor, so it floats around on the floor at the back. I might make a bracket for it to mount at the rear. Congrats on the new addition to the family. That doggo looks like he's going to be baby's best friend. Good luck managing with a Jimny though... when children come along all the plans you thought you had taped down go out the window at mach 2.0. You'll need that spare space just for the nappy bag, the rubbish bag, and the toy bag. Just to go to the shops ;-D
