Orthobros and RadTrads: Too Many Monks, Not Enough Knights
Some thoughts about the tendency for some contemporary Orthodox and Catholic men, even married ones, to emulate the monastic life (and I don't mean guys living in monasteries under vows of monasticism) and rejecting the archetype of the knight. It's not a good trend.

um..... we're not "imitating monasticism...." we're being wholesale REJECTED by the opposite sex. We have no choice.
Tiny Hats love those who don't oppose them. So those who support them preach "worldly quietism" which is about not upsetting anyone - even evil persons.
Read Storm of Steel
I've been happy to see the push back against that mindset. Lord knows we needed a lil orthobro energy last year, but I think it's time for us to move on
You cant fight back, if you try the state will stop you, everyone around you will stop you, you can only lose. You couldn't even start to form a militia without getting infiltrated. Perhaps if the monks and academics could provide an intellectual foundation for such an idea something may be rallied around that but the academics of the other side have way more power
Knights? You mean oprichniki or bogatyri? Constantinople had Varangian guards, still no knights. Orthodox knights, hm, what an idea
I just put out a video not too long ago on this need for a return to chivalry that does not neuter masculine strength. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.
A few points made in a critique of Paul Kingsnorth’s First Things offering made sense to me and is possibly relevant here. First of all, Kingsnorth didn’t give enough credit to the ways in which monasticism served and contributed to and supported Christian rulers and warriors. The critique also pointed out that it was disappointing to see a new convert enter the Cathedral through one door and then to chastise someone else (in this case Hirsi Ali) for entering by another. Yes, there are different vocations and the vocation of the Christian Knight, let us not forget, was to defend, via his sword and his personal manliness, the poor and defenseless. But Knighthood and Warriorhood has to be practiced and inculcated from early on - so a return to the Middle Age ethos would probably mean many more young men practicing martial arts on the village green.
You might be interested in interviewing someone on the relationship between Christianity (the Holy Spirit) and Kundalini. I’ve always heard scary things about Kundalini, but I am kinda surprised how similar the two are in reality. There are a couple authors that have written on this: Philip St. Romain and Anne-Marie Wegh.
The Fisher King (1991) is a good movie for this topic. I watched it a couple weeks ago and I’m still thinking about it. So much could be written about it tbh. Modern day lotuses, cyclops, trials to overcome, etc
You have to chat to Sebastian Morello about this!
The inane ramblings of a worldly man.
Interesting
Very good points. Im very wary of the piety-signaling of 'forget the world', etc etc. And if the 'west' should fall, as Kingsnorth suggests, something as sinister will replace it. Its also hard to justify that sentiment when there are growing numbers of Americans/westerners who are curious about the historic Church.
Listening to you talk the lyrics from Pete Seegers “where have a the flowers gone…..” comes to mind. Yes the days of knights, dragons, fair damsels is long long gone, ner to be seen in this desecrated, disenchanted, despiritualized, materialistic world.
I think a lot of young guys are turning to this pseudo-monasticism because the world has become a wilderness for them. Our third spaces are gone and the damsels are telling us they don't want to be saved.
As a Lady trying to make the Sophianic manifest in very masculine spaces, I can attest to the abundance of men carrying swords, and often they are chasing the Woman back into the wilderness with her Child. I’m not sure I’m having the same impressions of the world as you are Michael. Maybe we should talk about this.
Define swords please?
Thanks for the far-seeing perspective, we need it
Stimulating and nuanced as usual.Orthodox spirituality is rich and deep, and therefore is a minefield for the naive and the neophyte.I navigated it - with a lot of help - by using Paul Evdokimov's notion of "interiorised monasticism," as opposed to a strict, literal following of monastic culture. This allows the adept to navigate the demands of work and married life flexibly and discerningly. And as for spiritual knighthood, how about Spenser's Faery Queene ?
Where can we read the essay please.
There is nowhere left to run. #CausaSui
@@TheGringoSalado one planet.
@Michael Martin. In America, we never had knights. We've been blessed with Hillbillies though. What we need are more Orthodox Hillbillies. Hillbillies always have been the fronteirsmen, pioneers, cowboys and warrior subculture of America. As the conversion of Rome was actually the conversion of the Roman soldiers, so too the conversion of America will only happen when/if America's hillbillies become Orthodox. I'm a Married Orthodox Christian hermit in a remote part of the Ozarks worling to bring the Orthodox Church to Hillbillies here. I'm always armed. Im a former Light Infantry Squad leader with private security and protection experience, and was a lay Orthodox Christian prison minister at Michigan City Indiana State Prison before Covid. When neighbors miles away need help they call me before the Sheriff. I get there faster. I spent Friday night last week holed up in a neighbor's house, armed to the teeth after a drunk "hebrew roots" guy took pot shots at his home with his kids inside. We evacuated the kids and stood watch. They moved to another house they just bought the next day. The seller let them move before closing because he knew what happened. Still waiting for the Sheriff. The Outlaw Josie Wales is based on a real man from here, Bill Wilson. Imagine if Josie Wales were Orthodox?
No envy here my professor, lol. You are challenging a false monasticism. Most Orthodbros or EasteCaths don’t have a proper understanding of our tradition. You are not challenging the spirituality that I live successfully with 8 kids and a wife who is my goddess. I promote Hesychasm and live it and I do so as man of the world. Hesychasm is the spirituality of my church's monastic tradition and is something that redeems the world. I will challenge anyone who thinks otherwise. Monasticism is the soul of the Eastern churches and the nonmonastic are the body. Female and Male. The monastery is like a missile silo and the nonmonastic home is the place of the territorial troops. Monasticism is not a retreat from the world. Monasticism is salvation for the world. The Monk engages the archons at the spiritual level and proclaims their defeat. The nonmonastic does the same thing by going into the world and claiming territory for the kingdom of God. Although utilized in different ways, the common spirituality ultimately achieves the same objective, which is to make the world Eden.
W/o ties to identity and tradition, people can be remade into the ideas/visions of master planners. People must face this brutal reality head on!
@@TheGringoSaladotraditions and identities are the ideas/visions of the master planners
These onlyfans guys are of the world but not in it.
What is Christianity without church. What is the meaning of Christianity? I would love to know more about this. I really like this talk.
And what would you have these knights do? Chase windmills?
I see what you did there! 😅
_Train your body. Going to the gym is a good habit, but ideally one would pair it with calisthenics or something that focuses on holistically strengthening the body, as opposed to targeting specific muscle groups (many common routines are designed with a largely aesthetic basis/bias in mind). Cardio becomes more important the more unreasonably stagnant one's line of work and/or lifestyle is. _Obtain and become proficient at wielding your weapon(s) of choice. _Hand-to-hand combat is always worth learning. Activities like boxing and combat-oriented martial arts like jiujitsu can address this and provide a practicing environment (very important). Learning military-oriented hand-to-hand combat techniques won't really be useful until one has learned the ins and outs of facing an experienced and well-equipped opponent, through extended physical engagement. _Never neglect training the spirit, if one plans to be Biblical about it. "Training the body is good; training the spirit is better" (paraphrased). Examples: being consistent in things like reading the Living Word, prayer, and fasting. What these things lead to can be hard to foresee, in times of extended "peace." Boxing with shadows (windmills) never helped anyone. Facing a real adversary completely unequipped and lacking prior experience is unlikely to end very differently if and when things truly go South. Just my 2c. (Note: I know very little about the Middle Ages or knighthood. To me, knighthood has traditionally implied being battle-ready, among other, more context-dependent things.)
Behind the enemies of Christendom
Please remember to turn your phone off when making vids.
Where do you come up with these nuggets? 😅
@@michaelmartin8681 Don't know, just seemed pertinent to a discussion on how modernity has adversly affected nature and our experience of being in the moment, undistracted. Lots of love😘
A creator is revealed through his creation, like an artist is reflected in his output. He made the world and called it good, and He made Man and called him very good. This logic cannot be presented by those who present a nature god such as Gaia, or the various iterations; nature creating nature, nonsense. The mysteries of nature will never be fully grasped by man because they are as infinite as its creator, God, but they can awe the human spirit and fill it with hope and wonder at its beauty and grandeur.
Metaverse will take us even deeper into the unreal..
We are dealing with a deep hate for nature..the sacred.. A gnostic hate.
I'm so in love with all this in this video. thanks Mike! I need to get a copy of your book.
It has really taken me a lifetime to escape the theological boxes that I grew up in my thoroughly modern evangelical upbringing. You know the drill … with everything compartmentalized into either the sacred or the secular - the bible or the world - the natural or the supernatural, etc. etc. Even as a kid - though - I knew I felt more whole camping in the woods with my Boy Scout buddies than I did in church, but I had no theology for what I was experiencing until I was much older. Anyways - it took a while to unpack the mysticism and spirituality you can find in nature and weave it into my personal theology. But it happened over the decades through layering in things that I had never grown up with in my dispensational church … like the “Gifts of the Holy Spirit” (a present to me and my wife from Charismatic Catholics) or the “sacred character of all creation” (a present to me from my indigenous roots in Scandinavia [i.e., Sami Reindeer herders & Swedish Village grandparents] as well as from Native American friends and prophets who follow the “Jesus Way”). Over time my theology has widened and deepened, and becoming more embodied, artful and sacramental in the process. I am also glad that I am still alive to experience our current moment of “apocalypse” and the strange possibility that the worldwide Body of Christ might now begin to come to their senses regarding the spiritual state of the modern world. We seem to be in some kind of great awakening that may take many decades to reveal itself, but which just might help our children to reground themselves in truth, beauty, and the love of the Creator. In any event, … that’s my hope.
Lovely, nourishing thoughts. Thank you
The kingdom of God is in the heart of man built on the ruins of churches and words
just as you spoke of praying to the goddess (Mary ) and to Saint Hubert, an entire possee of deer appeared to me as i was driving; another car was coming and scared them, but i pulled over and waited for them to cross the street. the buck was waiting in the woods, watching ❤
whoa!
If you were poor and had nothing you're kind of living in nature already. Thats why people that have less are closer to God.
GRACE - SACRIFICE, as offered by nature, as mystical revelation, is very reasonable. methinks too, Christian mysticism seems to require ...(?) fulfillment (?)... through a relationship mediated by the word and, (probably) therefore, The Word.
Dear Christians, when will you take seriously the mandate to proclaim the gospel to all CREATION. (Mark 16:15)
“language is not only the vehicle of thought, it is also the driver” #NeilPostman
In Genesis Adam’s duties were to “dress and keep the garden” According to my Young’s Concordance the Hebrew for “dress and keep” could be translated to “serve and observe closely”
Hiking out in the desert of Moab Utah there were moments of clarity and a realization how small we truly are and how grand nature and God are.
I also enjoy Dylan Thomas, and Sophia is important- good talk
Every moment is a gift of Grace, question: what will you do with each moment? Should we fall,, each moment, the only response is penitence. Rough, tough, like the Cross. The blockchain of BEING, nay the gnostic modernist blockchain of BECOMING. You should interview Dr Douglas Haugan. Your poetic soul, and his political one could,, may source Truth.
how do you apply the concept of blockchain? I only know it as a technical matter. What is the analogy?
@ Process, chain of unfolding,, recommend “Dr Deep State” for anyone in this corner of the internet.
Yes
Yeah definitely possible.
The first time I truly understood what Christ did on the cross, and what he meant when he said, “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day”, was when I came across a 400 year old Sitka spruce that lay on the forest floor and all across the top of it rose young Sitka spruce and various other bushes and plants. A micro forest within a forest of giants. I remember feeling my breath taken away and I immediately began to weep. I saw my Lord crucified for me.
“If you can’t find a Christianity like that, there isn’t one.” - Michael Martin Best thing I’ve heard in my WHOLE LIFE!!! Thank you.
@ if you don’t “like people” you have definitely failed to see the Love within Creation. Understanding this relationship Sophianically would cultivate an empathic resonance with God and with each other. Where the resonance is absent, the relationship is incomplete, imo.
There's so much depth to the idea of eating and what we eat and being food for something else. Does the fox love the rabbit? I think so. The whole predator prey scenario and there being an agreement of sorts that happens. It's always bothered me immensely how people will join a cult and allow the cult leader to do horrible things to them. But there's an agreement that allows it. It's very deep. And important, I think, for people to understand.
I actually came back to my faith through time spent gardening and tending a small bit of land in northern Wisconsin. I would get these epiphanies (so to speak) that were convincing me of God's goodness and love.
Time outside and the development of awareness can be a very learning experience. Talking more about being in nature on a regular basis. Daily for long length of time like over an hour. Personal observations then take a unique path to greater understanding.
Religion, catechism, even scriptures are just words until we begin to know God by truly living in His creation.
