Just dropping by to say this one has been very entertaining, despite your own frustrations :p Kinda adds to it a little bit imo. :) I'm new to watching geoguessr content due i saw another video that i enjoyed, it might've been another one of yours not sure. (was couple weeks ago) And now i got recommended this one.
If you see a road number in brackets, that means the road you are on leads to that road. So if you see A123 with (M1) above or below, you are on the A123 and it leads eventually to the M1
24:35 that jetfighter is SAAB Draken that was used by Finnish Air Forces between 1972-2000. Those fighters were replaced by McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets beginning 1995
There's ski areas in other regions too than just Lapland 😅 Himos, Laajavuori, Sappee,....
Yup, some trees are already turning in the northern finland. We have a word for it: "ruska" (autumn leaf colors).
24:42 Afermative, it's real.
I'm From Turku and drive past the Jet almost every week!
Enää vain 998 700 katselua jäljellä. Jaksaa jaksaa!
Marks and Spencer is a very up-market shop - great for assembling a fancy gift basket, but not affordable for most as a routine shop. Harrods is even more expensive and not a chain. Personally I do my main shop at Lidl then buy anything Lidl don't stock in Tesco.
I always visited that McDonalds at Amanda when I was a kid. We didn't have McDonalds in my home town back then, so when we visited Haugesund we always got to eat McDonalds. It was a rare occation, which made it nice. Now that McDonalds is everywhere, it's no longer exciting.
Wait no way 3:58 I know that Mac Donald’s! I’ve driven past it so many times, between 2 places I often go. Fun fact: That place is roughly just 2-3ish years old because the highway itself situated next to too is really recent, before that there were just small 2 way roads slithering around the mountains which, it may sound epic driving in those, but when you’ve lived in Norway it just gets boring and a highway is just so much better
Lmao this is so stupid I love it
Round 5 is my home town! I knew it would pop up one day! I used to live a stone's throw from Selhurst Park from 3yo - 11yo, I distinctly remember on Saturdays the floodlights and the crowd chanting and Thornton Heath pubs full of Palace fans. Haha I love the fact you can totally hear a South London accent even when its a whole crowd of people chanting. "EEEGAAWWWZ, EEEGAAWWWZ" (Eagles, Eagles) hahah
"...gets lost in the Midlands" - I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy! 🙂
Sir, you clearly love the art of GeoGuessr with that number of videos, my hat's off to you!
Car parks still look completely different from the US bc of the lack of F-150s. There's no law against bumper stickers - people just think they look bad.
Round 4 was immediately recognisable for me as Coventry is my local city (I live in a village a few miles out). The Skydome you mentioned on the sign in Coventry is home to the Coventry Blaze ice hockey team (as you can see from my name i’m a fan 😊) they’ve had a few American (and Canadian) players over the years. Haji Wright seems to have settled in well in the EFL with the Sky Blues, he’s joined a small list of Americans to have played for City with Cobi Jones and Roy Wegerle both at Coventry in the early 90’s!
Carphone Warehouse was founded in the 80's and didn't change their name (I don't know why). They were on almost every high street in the UK until they closed in 2020
I didn't even notice they disappeared - same with many other chain stores like Dixons and Kwik Save. It was only when I watched someone's old video of driving around London in the late 90's when I realised that phone numbers on advertising used to be everywhere but now they're all gone for obvious reasons.
Round 1: I think Merry Hill is Birmingham, but I don't know more precisely than that. I find a sign saying M5 north and Dudley, which helps narrow it down. Going a bit further and I find a sign with the A road number, which is all I need. Round 2: Cambridge Central Library is a big clue. The Grand Arcade turns out to be well marked. Finding the right bit of the shopping centre is trickier but 16 yards is close enough for 5000 points. Round 3: So many clues in this one that I didn't need to move. Round 4: This feels vague familiar, but not enough to place it. Moving I see signs for The Precinct which is too generic to help at this point, but then I see the Lady Godiva statue and a flag saying Coventry Pride. That's plenty enough clues to get 5000 points. Round 5: Centrale shopping centre next to tram tracks, that can only be Croydon. An easy 5000 points.
See It, Say It, Sorted is an initiative from British Transport Police to report problematic behaviour.
"See it, say it, sorted" is a phrase used by the British Transport Police to encourage people to report suspicious things found at train stations, bus stations, airports, or onboard public transport, anything from suspicious packages to people acting just a bit sketchy. They also have a different one for reporting harassment, you can just text a number with the train you're on and other info.
That phrase annoys me so much. I was once on a packed, overheated train and there was an audible groan when the message played twice in a row for some reason.
@@jpaulc441 i thought it was "see it, say it, sort it" for ages before i saw the actual sign. such a rubbish slogan
see it, say it, sorted. this is used on British Trains and is there to tell people that if they see something that doesnt look right, report it to the authorities.. ive always assumed this was crime related. Ive been to two of these Malls, Aberdeen and Cambridge (i go to Cambridge as least once a year to go to their computer museum)
With my stepdad's life insurance we get a £100 M&S voucher which we use to pay for Christmas food, otherwise we don't shop at places like that

Its so nice to see UK maps being played, so rarely happens nowadays. I have a map that may be of interest to you. Its all seaside locations around the UK. I know you like towns and cities, but I removed some of the more remote locations so you may enjoy having a look around the coast. Its called "Seaside Around The UK." Thank you.
Thanks for watching and creating a map. I will certainly play it - coming soon!
The fighter jet reminds me, somehow I've always lived in a place that is close to an airport and the fighter jets typically have practice on a certain day of the week. When I was a kid (1970s) they were still allowed to break the sound barrier when they flew over places where people live, and that always made a huge bang that kept echoing a long time afterwards. Fighters make 10x more noise that other planes anyways.
Wow, that's interesting!
4:34 yes, seems about right. That's Lahti.
Imatra actually hosted motorbike grand prix for years, those are the rememnants of the street track. Hail to Jarno Saarinen and Giacomo Agostini.
It did also this summer. That roundabout is part of the track.
The ski jumping hills probably gives it away, but Lahti is known as winter sports city: "Lahti, Finland, FIS World Cup, 100 year anniversary Lahti Ski Games". One local legend is ski jumper Janne Ahonen, who won the Five Hills Tournament five times. He has also competed in Drag Racing and became 5th in Top Fuel class in 2010 in the European Championships: "Janne Ahonen. Top fuel. Alastaro Night Race Finals 2017". I don't know, if you get a statue for 100K views, but Finland's greatest football player Jari Litmanen did get for his achievements. He's also from Lahti: "Jari Litmanen: The Finnish Maestro's Legendary Arrival at Ajax!" and "Jari Litmanen Ajax Legend Highlights HD". Thousand videos in, so someone might have brought this up already, but Lahti is also known for being Finland's Chicago: "Day Trip to Lahti - Chicago of Finland". Other cities have nicknames too; E.g. Tampere-as Finland's first industrial city-is known as Finland's Manchester and Kotka is known as Savonians' America, as some of them moved to Kotka after work and better living: "Mannerheim seisoo keskellä metsää // Mannerheim stands in the woods". While you are lost in the middle of rural nowhere, couple of ads from possible sponsors: "kekkilä "mafia"" and "TV-Mainos: Biolan - YksKakkaa 20v Retro". 'Messi' means 'mess'. 'Messinki' however means 'brass'. And if you drop one 's', then 'mesi' means 'nectar'. Where we are going we don't need roads: "Saab J35 Draken Marketing video", "Why did Finland have Soviet MiG-21s?" and "Arkistojen kätköistä - From the archives: Ilmavoimat 1980-luvulla - Finnish Air Force 1980´s". To make sense of what's going on in Imatra. The Imatrankoski rapids are one of the Finland's first tourist attractions: "Imatran koskinäytös 4K Imatra Rapids Show", "Imatra road races: A brief history", "Imatran koski ja Valtion hotelli, Imatra" and "Osmo's Cosmos: Highway To Hell - live 2018".
Biketrails have come since 1960's-70's. Steadily increasing.
That's great. We have a decent network of rail trails here in the US. Old rail lines now bike trails believe or not...
Congrats for platinum medal in Finland and 1000th video and hopefully you'll reach the 100k views! Answers for some of your questions: The fall isn't here yet. The daily temperatures here in south are still over 20°C/70°F and the nature is green. It begins to change to autumn colors from the north in September and it reaches southern parts of the country in the following weeks. Haukipudas used to be an independent municipality, but it was merged to Oulu in 2013. The jet in Turku was a Saab J35 Draken. They were replaced with F/A-18 Hornets in 1990s and some of those Drakens were left as memorials like that one. Finland's Hornets will be replaced with F-35s soon. That electric thing in the middle of the roundabout in Imatra is a memorial for Rautarouva (iron ma'am) line which was an electric line from Imatra to Viipuri (Vyborg), Helsinki and Turku and it was built in 1920s. Very near to that location is still the biggest hydropower plant of the country. Its capacity is 192 MW and annual production 1 TWh.
Thanks! A Saab jet - quite interesting! F-35s are on their way
You got the platinum medal for the 25k, that's why it didn't look like gold.
Yes, I'm a bit old school so I always think of the Olympics - Gold, Silver, Bronze. I forget Platinum. Haha
congrats on 1000 videos 🎉💪
Thanks. I enjoy doing it.
We can't play along if you didn't set it to Challenge! All i can see is your results
But to get the platinum medal he wanted he had to play in single player. I guess they've done it that way because otherwise you could just have someone create a challenge link and let you know the locations and easily get the 25k.
gg
Thanks
Bicycle routes (kevyen liikenteen väylät) are not anNew phenomenon in Finland. I guess the boom started as early as in late 1970s and 1980s.
Found a thesis work that confirms that the focus towards building bike paths along the roads begun here around 1970s. Though there might have been an odd one built even before that.
I started biking on my own in 1976. Bike paths were everywhere here In Ulvila by then .
That "lighthouse" sign directs travellers towards "Rantatie" - road on the coast. It goes along the Gulf of Bothnia all the way from the south to the north. Haukipudas is now a part of Oulu, the municipal merger happened in 2013.
What was the reason for a municipal merger?
@@alloverthemap23 Usually, the reason for mergers is economy: smaller municipalities have trouble fulfilling what is required by law. In this case it seems that there was a vision (by the mayor of Oulu?) of "Greater Oulu", a large municipality that could be the powerhouse of the 65th latitude. Please, someone can correct me if I'm mistaken. These municipalities have merged with Oulu at some point: Oulujoki (1965), Ylikiiminki (2009), Haukipudas (2013), Kiiminki (2013), Oulunsalo (2013) and Yli-Ii (2013). Muhos rejected the merger in 2013, and Ii probably is not currently interested.
10:27 "Myrkky" means poison in Finnish. Quite an interesting location name. 21:09 "Messinki" is brass in Finnish. It's from the Germanic word "messing"

That fighter plane is Draken SAAB J 35B, which was used as a training plane in the Finnish Air Force for 23 years (1972-1995).
It was a full blooded fighter jet actually, not a trainer.
@@fleshesposito especially this particular one since it's a single seater

@@Hairysteed Last B-model Drakens were retired in 1995. F- and S-models remained in service until 2000.
@@fleshesposito J35BS was always considered a trainer in Finland, a substitute for J35FS and J35S with more capable radar sets, to spare newer planes from some flight hours.

Kaivopuisto is a District of Helsinki... a very opulent one, and home to many embassies, biggest of them being the US embassy. The other district full of embassies is Kulosaari, which is also very opulent.
I've been to Gothenburg as a child, but only accidentally :D Back then (early 1980s) there was a cruise ship called Finnjet (built 1977) that sailed between Helsinki and Germany. My mother and I and some family friends took the cruise and had a good time in Hamburg. But when we were supposed to travel back home, we were told that Finnjet was broken and that they'd arrange an alternate route for us. It became maybe a bit bigger detour than we expected. Another ship took us to Gothenburg and then a bus drove us from there to Stockholm. Then yet another ship took us back to Helsinki. Not what we had planned, but hey, we got to see the world :D Towards the end of its life cycle, Finnjet did one unanticipated trip. When the hurricane Katrina caused havoc in New Orleans in 2005, Finnjet was sent there to act as temporary lodging for students whose campus had been destroyed. I felt good about that because I had good memories of the ship and it was nice to see that it got such a worthy task at the end of its life. After that it changed owners a few times and was finally scrapped in 2008.
I recognised the last one as Kuopio because of two stores: the Carlson department store and the Partanen toy store, which used to be the biggest toy store in Finland. Both of these are exceptional stores because they have managed to be around for a very long time but haven't needed to join any bigger chain. Carlson started maybe 150 years ago, Partanen in 1966. I remember that Partanen was one of my favorite places when I was a kid back in the 1970s and 80s because it was HUGE compared to other places that sold toys. A lot of smaller stores have been sucked into the K-group or S-group over the years, or have been bought by international companies, but these two have somehow managed to be successful on their own. Nowadays they both have stores also elsewhere but they both started out in Kuopio.
You pronounce finnish and swedish words quite well! Usually they are butchered quite badly by people not familiar with the languages.
About the old American cars, as a Finn (never owned one but have driven as a guest a couple) as I saw it from the outside it was the community around the hobby. They were cars to restore/modify, drive around in hobbyist gatherings, and to been seen in.
