Manns Creek in On3, first operating sessions
my 2024 goal was to host an operating session by the end of the year, and I made it with one day to spare. Here are some scenes from an operating session with a single guest and my self operating, and a session with three guest and myself as dispatcher.

Ron Lane, West Virginia Narrow Gauge Manns Creek Railway Interview
Переглядів 587Рік тому
On 5-5-2023 and 11-16-2023 I interviewed Ron Lane, co-author of the book "West Virginia Narrow Gauge, The Manns Creek Railway". Part one of this interview we talked about Ron and how he and Ted Schnepf came to write a book about the obscure, nine mile long, Manns Creek Railway. The second interview we talked specifically about some of the major contributors to the book. Some photos were provide...

here is the first trip from Clifftop to Sewell. This process started 17 years ago, and this is the first time I have been able to unload a train and run it to be unloaded all on its one and on one layout. I started messing around with live loads in HO scale back in the mid 1980s. In 2008 I build my first On3 Manns Creek hopper from a Sam Swanson article, and on a whim I tried to see if I could ...

Crownironman, I'm building an "era 2" model coal rail and have not been able to positively identify what kinds of coal carts they used on these trains. Your gondola's seem right are they modeled from that period?
I am not sure what "era 2" is. The Manns Creek used these hoppers from about the 1930s-1956
Fantastic videos on this weathering job!!!!
Nice video, thanks 🙂 of a magnificent railroad
Interior details super great,,nicely done,,😊
Flat car looks great,,I did a few for my place but yours is drop dead beautiful,,I’m going to try and get one like this now,,thanks for sharing,,nicely done,,😊
Jeff, looking forward to your 2025 progress! The layout is looking cool and the loading of coal is much better than I imagined....8 out of 10 on the cool scale....Brings out the inner child. I like that your compromising to bring caboose into the operations....Time will come to do the accurate models (that only you and handfull of others on the planet know about). Backups make lots of sense, I have duplicate Sn2 brass locos to do the same and to provide replacement locos. Thanks for sharing.
BTW, could you post the jig you built for bending the LED LEGS.
I built the jig from styrene pieces, an image that shows the dimensions show up in the video
This is way super cool! I’ve been thinking of using momentary push button control for my servo thrown turnouts. In my case I was going to use a separate bi-color LED but what you’ve done is way cleaner. I’ve gotta get some of these and try it. This is great! Thanks.
Well done video and informative! Thanks. It’s funny how when hosting sessions every job takes longer than anticipated. As you noted.
I wonder if the cork is allowing your tipple to flow too fast into the hoppers, hence the spills
What a stunning shadow box type of shelf layout, and your artistic vision and creative capabilities are obvious. * subscribed for more inspiration *
I have my little Cox Pinto gas powered tether funny car but I never knew that there was a full size one and I never seen any full-size footage until today! *This is the absolute first time and thank you very much for listing it!
wher u get that background ... its beautifoul ahhhh i need that in N :)
@A.J-TrainS trackside scenery, they have a website to order from
I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing the support materials you have prepared to assist the operations. I never realized that static friction could be such an issue.....
Nice update. Great additions in the train room.
Layout is looking great. What did those guys think of running steam and shays?
thanks, they said they liked it, and they want to come back, so I guess that is a good thing. These guys were picked because they were ok with slow running, so that helped as well. the jobs still take much longer than I though, so maybe rather than adding more than three people I will just split the session and run the second half with a second crew on a different day
@brianbond2901 The shays ran so smooth. As I mentioned to Jeff, I honestly had zero thoughts of anything having an issue. The mechanics of each piece was unlike anything I’ve witnessed first hand in the model RR space. Sure, people can say, “You haven’t seen so and so’s RR.” Put this RR on the top of that list. The pace is what I really liked and with that, the experience was unmatched. In my opinion, this railroad will be one of the most technologically advanced RR’s in the country. The in person sounds was unlike anything I’ve heard first hand. The echo of the whistle feels like it’s filling the air for miles. It’s all so well thought out and executed with such precision. The acclimation of the RR takes a little time and I’ve followed this channel/Jeff’s work for years now. Seeing it in action was great, but to run a job takes the cake. Thank you & a job well done Jeff.
Interesting problem on loading the small tipple. I recently added live loading to my second smaller tipple and am having the same problem with coal "jumping" out of the car. Of course, mine is manually operated, not a cool conveyor, automated system!! I like your fix and will give it a try. Nice update. I'm going to give the different throttle a try, looks interesting.
originally I planned on a chute that would raise up and down, but I decided to keep it simple. now I think the answer might be to go back to the raising chute. I think that a vertical drop would be a solution also. if I make a chute that is more like the ones used a steam locomotive coaling tipples (enclosed with a turned down end), I think that will help. The Clifftop tipple has cutes that are not sloped as much, so the coal flows slower, which I think helps a lot.
that's really neat.
Looking very good sir! Lovely Backdrop, TS does lovely stuff.
On the landisburg tipple, could you use a hinged door at the end of the shoot? Just a thought.
That’s not a bad idea….i will have to think about that one.
Great stuff!! My experience on shays is after completed drive run dry for some time . Then lube this will remove any binding and mesh gears together.
Great video..
This is amazing :). Similar to bonsai is all I can think of to explain why this hobby is so addicting and feels so good even just to watch other people’s toys (models) running around. Something about it and when you get a layout this immersive it’s just a pleasure. Thank you very much for the hard work and the vision and for sharing :)
Great explanation! And great patience!

Crossing activation failure at 4:01 lol. Nahh, you didn't run that light it dropped beforehand
I'm planning my first layout - HO scale industrial switching - and because I have 3 cats, was thinking of trying to create some sort of shadowbox shelf layout with a protective front cover, and you have given my a lot of ideas. BTW, the amount of operational details, and scenery components you're creating is stunning. * subscribed *
Thanks. I have a cat now, he is too old to jump up on the layout now, but when I started building it he used to like walking on the roadbed and go through the hole in the wall. As he got older I stacked boxes up for him to climb up on the upper level, however once I laid tracks he didn't like the feeling of walking on them. these days I have a chair in the room that he will sleep on while I work. my wife says we will get another car after this one passes, so I may be glad I have built the layout this way as well.
@@crownironman I hope your cat keeps doing well as long as possible. One of ours passed a few months ago. It's not easy...
The amount of thought put into your process is staggering.
What gauge track is it? What brand track? It looks scratch built!
It is On3, so that makes it 3 foot gauge, and yes it is all hand laid
Beautiful fit and finish. Love the cubby spots underneath the layout. They aren’t just for cards. Gotta have a place for your beer!
Man, you have really planned this out well. Great walk through and explanations. The fascia transformed everything nicely. It really helps to highlight and showcase the layout. If I could summarize the entire project thus far I would say very neat work.
I have to say, you've taught me quite a few things over the past 15 minutes. Definitely a high IQ individual!
That's some high quality work there! The black valance, fascia, the card boxes and controls look great. Thanks for the update.
I really like the defect aspect of the operation. That is a really neat way to make the "repair" facilities useful other than being a visual placeholder. Also adds a bit of switching for shops and hostlers.
Good word...truncated...your fascia looks outstanding! The hard work paid off! I like your low-lit inset panels too. The layout is coming along great!
Thanks, it’s been a bit of a project
Subbed you love it
Oh so cool
What scale is this? Thanks...

Does anyone besìdes me remember how those SooLine patch jobs on Milw units were deriseivly called the "Rotten Pumpkin" paint scheme?
i like how the cars have sound in them, pretty neat
Great progress, even if summer has not impressed the rest of the family. I can envisage plenty of train "lost" in the wilderness scenes as this progresses. Wonderful is an old fashioned word but surely appropriate to the era you are portraying.
It does look like Cass! All those switchbacks.
What percent grades on your layout and are the locomotives Bachmann?
the grades are 5.25%, the locomotives are all my own design.
Once you add the rock and green these scenes up, they are going to look great. Thanks for sharing
Awesome video and great narration🎉
I live about a mile from the real Quincy mine and this very close to the original. Out buildings and all. The ore cars are spot on. Great work.
Very nice layout and equipment. Thanks for sharing with us.
Do you have a link for that light strip that you used?
Suggestion: where the creek, at landisburg, goes into the backdrop. You were going to put a house on stilts. Wouldn't it be cool to maybe do a copy of the Babcock gristmill?
