Yellowstone Backpack: Amazing Wildlife and a Climb of Electric Peak HD 720p
This was a five day solo backpacking trip in the northwest area of Yellowstone National Park and is a beautiful area with abundant wildlife. The climb of Electric Peak involves some steep loose rock and requires good route finding skills. It is not suitable for unexperienced hikers or less athletic people. It's also susceptible to thunder and lightning storms -- thus the name Electric Peak!

Three Person Rope Team Crevasse Rescue
Переглядів 1,5 тис.7 місяців тому
This is a class and demo showing how to setup a 3:1 pulley system with a three person rope team to rescue someone who's fallen into a crevasse. This, and other skills, should be practiced before going on a snow covered glacier. Check out my other video showing how to rappel into a crevasse and ascend back out: ua-cam.com/video/htRGqDUn1wQ/v-deo.html
Rappelling into a Crevasse and Ascending Back Out with Minimal Gear

This video shows a simple method of how to rappel into a crevasse and ascend back out. It maybe "simple" but it's still an advanced technique that should be practiced in a safe, controlled setting. Checkout my video showing a full rescue: ua-cam.com/video/mdpl8bm4zZ0/v-deo.html Music: bensound.com

The auto block/carabiner option (if you don't have a progress capture device) image is at 15:21. This has the advantage over a prusik as it's self tending if set up correctly. It can also be released under load which is an added benefit. Note the carabiner with the built-in pulley which helps reduce friction and would be more efficient than just a carabiner.

If you don't use your had straps, you're likely not to have pols anymore after you feel in a step slope

You do have to let go of one the poles and it may go to the bottom of the slope while you hopefully stop. In most cases you'll be able to go down and get it later. I personally would rather take a chance of losing a pole than taking a long and potentially dangerous fall!

but then if you ski without your wrist straps there's a high probability of losing your poles when you take a tumble. what about with the black diamond whippet....I guess it is recommended to use the pole strap when skiing with that?

Love it, I've been skiing for damn near 30 years now and I've never heard of the self arrest. I guess I never really have been skiing in areas where I would really need to use this technique. With east coast skiing in the US I will usually slide 20 yards or so before coming to a stop. Good to know though!

This is bad advice. Never go on a snow/ice slope without crampons and an ice axe (and know how to use them). Put your poles away. Far too many accidents in the winter hills are being caused by people slipping without crampons and an axe in hand. I have fallen and tried to use my pole to arrest my slide. It doesn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ex-SMR team member.

Surely driving an object into the ground with all your might whilst holding on for dear life is a fair way to slow yourself down if you're hurtling down a slope though.

I’ve done it and it works. 20+ years of skiing all over Europe. I’ve fallen quite a few times on some huge slopes and have been able to stop myself from sliding all the way down.

You've either never been to a ski resort before, or you're just crazy. Have you ever seen a skier at that ski resort skiing with an ice axe instead of ski poles?

Great video, very good point to keep both hands as close to the basket as possible. I’ve seen two friends try to arrest with a trekking pole with hands spaced 1-2 feet apart and both times the pole snapped from the force and they were unable to regain the array and got hurt. Both are okay now but they hit rocks going pretty fast. Be safe out there!
