    Good to know. Just watched a video of a guy flying 50 mph down the slope for a mile.

    Great video, very good point to keep both hands as close to the basket as possible. I’ve seen two friends try to arrest with a trekking pole with hands spaced 1-2 feet apart and both times the pole snapped from the force and they were unable to regain the array and got hurt. Both are okay now but they hit rocks going pretty fast. Be safe out there!

    Thank you! This is very helpful. I'm planning backpacking trips with the potential of crossing the occasional snow field and this could really come in handy as an extra safety measure.
    All the best, Scott

    Love it, I've been skiing for damn near 30 years now and I've never heard of the self arrest. I guess I never really have been skiing in areas where I would really need to use this technique. With east coast skiing in the US I will usually slide 20 yards or so before coming to a stop. Good to know though!

    If you don't use your had straps, you're likely not to have pols anymore after you feel in a step slope

    • @mountainwise2811
      @mountainwise2811  3 місяці тому

      You do have to let go of one the poles and it may go to the bottom of the slope while you hopefully stop. In most cases you'll be able to go down and get it later. I personally would rather take a chance of losing a pole than taking a long and potentially dangerous fall!

  • @proverbalizer
    @proverbalizer Рік тому +2

    but then if you ski without your wrist straps there's a high probability of losing your poles when you take a tumble. what about with the black diamond whippet....I guess it is recommended to use the pole strap when skiing with that?

    Great video thanks! Think it would work on a steep groomed trail as well if you were going at high speed and fell?

    • @tonyjewell478
      @tonyjewell478 3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the positive feedback. Hard to say about how well this would work in a high speed fall, but it would certainly be worth trying as it might slow you down and keep you from tumbling. It really works best at the start of a fall before you pick up speed!

      Because actually pulling this off is much harder in a real sliding episode(on skiis) where either your hands are tied to the pole handle or the safety trigger caused them to fly off while you're trying your best to straighten out your sliding trajectory. This is such an unrealistic strategy honestly you're not gonna be able to grab the end of your pole unless youre on a long stablized slide at which point you'll have figured this out yourself or some variation of it. But this tip is useless for 99.999% of all falls.

    • @shaddjohnstone8075
      @shaddjohnstone8075 3 роки тому

      I would NOT recommend Black Diamond. If you are expecting to take these poles into Black Diamond type of conditions, these are NOT for you. I bought them with the faith that they would stand up in Black Diamond type of conditions. One broke with very little force in a green diamond type of condition. Black Diamond will not stand behind their product. I had to call and email them for a month and they said that I was at fault and put excessive force on the pole. I always pay top dollar for fly rods and they always replace them with no questions. I would recommend Walmart. You will get similar quality for $30 and at least they will replace them if they break.

    This is bad advice. Never go on a snow/ice slope without crampons and an ice axe (and know how to use them). Put your poles away. Far too many accidents in the winter hills are being caused by people slipping without crampons and an axe in hand. I have fallen and tried to use my pole to arrest my slide. It doesn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ex-SMR team member.

      Surely driving an object into the ground with all your might whilst holding on for dear life is a fair way to slow yourself down if you're hurtling down a slope though.
