Wow! It's interesting seeing a female Network Engineer, this is an encouragement to me; as I'm just starting out in this career path. Though I've not gotten a job offer after my training in CCNA, CompTIA network+, A+ but I'm believing to get one soon.

I want to be a “manager” at my job only because it’s 100% possible to have a manager title (due to workload and therefore increased pay) without people managing a single soul In my role, I deal with upper management all the time. I treat them like regular peers because they are lol I get along with them very well

Companies don’t own us and we don’t marry them. We sell our skills and experiences to them, that’s all. In consulting my job doesn’t involve x hours, it is about completing a project. The key is to set a goal, don’t expect to do it forever or aimlessly. Plan to pay off your house, or cars, or save a half a million, then commit to quitting the least desirable one.

I have seen people come to the field and dont even know how to use outlook but they have 5 to 10 years experience working! lol. Bootcamps can be great but like she said, they are scamming! The prices are outrageous and sometimes the training is so basic and unstructured!. That's why i always encourage people to shadow to see the day to day work and how its done!

I agree 100% with what you said! Everything you said was spot on and exactly what im feeling. I'm an E-6 in the Navy, I was promoted last year, and now I'm a leading petty officer (LPO) of a division of 12 people, and I fcking hate it! I would argue being a "manager" in the military is even worse than being one in the civilian world, because not only are you responsible for their professional lives you're also responsible for the personal lives. Every little thing they do will come back to bite or burden you somehow. If they dont make their bed in the morning you're going to get yelled at for it, if they forget to file some admin paper work you're a bad leader because you didnt remind them or werent tracking. If they get a ticket or get arrested you're going to know about it or have to show up to get them. If they dont get something done that has nothing to do with you, its your fault! I have to know where they are and what they're doing at all times of the day and be able to explain why or else I get yelled at by my superiors. I have to type up and edit all of their evaluations and awards packages. Which I hate ALOT! If they're not doing anything, I get this constant pressure from higher up to make stuff for them to do. If their uniform is messed up, somehow, no matter how small the discrepancy if I dont catch and correct it before someone higher rank notices it, I get yelled at. When we don't get out early enough, I feel like the guys on my team blame me for it. You were so right about the meetings! My job has become so much more political since I got promoted. The number of meetings with other first classes, chiefs, and officers I get pulled into skyrocketed significantly. They're talking about nothing or nothing I care about in these meetings and it drives me crazy. There's a committee of other first class petty officers that I automatically got added to just because I got promoted and I didn't get a choice, so now I gotta go to their meetings, pay dues, and do whatever volunteer BS they sign us up for. I used to not mind being in the Navy when I was an E-5, I would be assigned tasks/problems to solve, I would solve them, and then the rest of my time was mine. I, myself am an independent, libertarian type, I like freedom, autonomy, and being left tf alone. Now, I'm put into a postion where I feel like im baby sitting grown ass adults who arent that much younger than I am. Im constantly on the hook for everything they do (on & off the clock), I get multi-paragraph messages from my divisional officer about business at 8 pm when im trying to relax and decompress. It feels like a prison and im constantly waking up feeling anxious, angry, and depressed all the time. So, now im planning on getting out and going into IT/Cybersecurity. It's not normal that I'm going through the five stages of grief every week. I dont like being a leader, I dont care for it, and I especially hate it because I was put into this position because I passed some test that they forced me to take. I was never really given a choice. (If you dont take the test its disobeying a lawful order) I never asked them to promote me, I was perfectly fine where I was. 😓

The government sector is where it is at. A large number of the videos I have seen on UA-cam is people getting fired or laid off in the private sector. You feel bad for these people because it is almost similar to how the NFL treats its players. Cool as long as you produce, but when you cannot produce, here goes your final check.
