In episode 1 I drew and 3D printed an early era nuclear flask wagon to be steam hauled as in some photos I'd found online. In the second part I draw up and print the flask and cover. I also print a second later version of the wagon to show how easy it is to make different versions of the same basic wagon. Bits list:- Nem coupling , buffers and wheelsets from Bachmann Pinpoint bearings from Alan...
Project Magnox wagon Part 1
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
I wanted an early era nuclear flask wagon to steam haul as in some photos I'd found online. As no one seemed to make a ready to run or kit I thought I would see if I could draw and 3D print one myself. I added a few bits that I could buy and this is what I managed to build. Bits list:- Nem coupling , buffers and wheelsets from Bachmann Pinpoint bearings from Alan gibson I think. Special thanks ...

KR Models Consett Ore Wagons
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 роки тому
I finally received my Consett Ore wagons from KR Models and had an afternoon to unbox them, look at them and have some fun running the wagons on my layout. I had to do a quick fix on the bogie screws but after a year and a half on pre-order I was just pleased to have them. So here's a short film of them being pulled by 2 Bachmann 9F sound fitted locomotives with the same sound chip but differen...

3D Printing a Signal Box Interior
Переглядів 7963 роки тому
In order to add an extra level of detail to the layout I've bought a 3D resin printer and in this video I'll show you how I drew up then printed an interior for the signal box which appeared at the end of my mimic board film. Extra Information:- The printer is a Creality LD-002R £180. The wash tank is an Elegoo Mercury £100. The resin used was Elegoo Photopolymer Grey ABS type Resin £30 per lit...
mimic boards for point and signal control
Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
I've finally finished rebuilding my first mimic. In this video I'll show you how I did it and how it works. Only another 4 to build and fit but it's nice being able to control the signals and points, well in 1 area of the layout at least.

Rolling Stock Arrivals :- Bachmann Mk 1 Carriages
Переглядів 1113 роки тому
New rolling stock arrivals. A rake of 3 Bachmann MK 1 carriages bought on ebay for only £16 each, bargain. As I grew up in the BR Blue Grey livery era I kind of missed seeing this stock on my railway so I got these two carriages so I can run some "End of steam to start of diesel" type formations. I'm planning to have some mixed livery DMUs if I can pick up a replacement class 105 or 108 bodyshe...

looks fantastic what a great tool that laser cutter is
very handy
Great stuff - how thick was that ply/mdf?
4mm mdf
Nice idea. It looks like you could use the cut=outs for a similar idea or even as toys for the youngsters. A nice painting project even. Cheers!
i have some lined up on edges and the like around the workshop
Nice video, I just picked up a GWR version yesterday.
Where does one get the sound decoder?
My one came from Legomanbiffo via DC Kits
@@andy_croft thanks
Masterful bit of 3D drawing! It looks like BR Freightliner containers were slightly different from ISO shipping containers that are commonplace today
Yes, they were different. They created a "standard" which has been modified and improved over the year since.
Has anyone had any problems with any orders with KR direct? I've been waiting TWO months for my order. I then discovered Rails of Sheffield have these wagons "off the shelf".
Hi. This is just what I have been looking for my n gauge layout. I went to the website suggested and followed the suggested instructions, even added a variation, but it do not come up? Peter

the link is still working @@RabidWombatz
@@andy_croft cool, working now! I got a “not found” yesterday.
Absolutely extraordinary - the detail you have captured is quite astonishing. An incredible piece of work! As others have said before me, please let me know if ever you are minded to sell these, as I would absolutely love to have one!
Just as a point of interest and correction. The wagons shown on the Airfix Kit box for their 9F were not Consett iron ore hoppers but NCB coal hoppers. These were available from Lima 302892 . I too was always interested in the Tyne Dock Consett wagons and collected 9+ of the lima wagons intending to convert/repaint, but I'm now waiting for a delivery from KR of the correct ones. NCB had built a similar wagon and was quite common throughout Europe, but the Consett wagons were specifically designed for that one route and only ever used there. It's just a pity the doors on the KR model don't operate, they do on the Lima model!
I can remember looking at some german db wagons which were similar
Very good example of a flask. I was a Refuelling controller at Calder Hall power station and loaded hundreds of flasks in my time for transfer across site. Have you posted the STL file on the Thingiverse site by any chance. I have the same Illigoo printer has your self and Chitubox to produce them. Would appreciate your assistance if you have put them on the site or if not could you mail me the file, im happy to reimburse you bearing in mind the amount of time it must have taken you to design the flask. I have a class 37 with the Lord Hinton name plate. A large bolder was installed just across from my office with a plaque commemorating Lord Hinton has he was part of the team that designed Calder hall
Is this to make one for yourself, just the flask?
Yes im interested in making a flask and modifying 1 of my FNA flask wagon
@@andy_croft yes its only for myself, ill modify 1 of my FNA flask wagons
What sort of power are you using on the laser cutter to burn of the paint
It's a raster engraving, about 40% power of our 100 watt laser but speed is high at approx. 400mm per second. hope that helps
@@andy_croft Thanks
Andy, Would you be interested in printing and selling some? As i currently dont have a 3d printer and about to start my layout and could do with a load of these.. Thanks Rodger
how many ?
@@andy_croft 15 Please.
Very nice, well above hobby level
I see when you are designing the plug that the version uploaded to thingiverse has no scallops for the soldered wires, did you decide in the end these were not required?
well spotted , I uploaded the wrong file. New version is now there,👍 enjoy printing it.
Great video, I am just staring my journey on 3d printing and designing something like that would take me a very long time, I did search for the files on thingiverse as suggested, but they did not appear for me. Please can you share a link. Thank you
Wow - that's a lot of skills involved in all that! Excellent results - and well explained. I'd like to have seen a bit more on how you did the wiring and connectors. Great stuff though.
Wonderful work!
thanks, i've made improvements on the next one.
Hi Andy. Great solutions to problems - both for the mimic board and the point motor plugs. Unfortunately, this is a little too technical for me at my early stage of building a layout and the fact that I have no access to either a laser cutter or a 3-D printer. Nevertheless, it's great to see what can be achieved.
Hi. I have both analogue and digital locos, so I would be very interested to hear how you manage to supply DC and DCC power to your layout.
All the analogue locos have been fitted with chips now and the dc power is only for the cobalt point motors and leds feedback lights. AC 20v via 6 cdu s for the peco point motors. A happy mix of old and new
I was looking forward to this. Given the information you had to hand this is a good representation. I've seen quite a few of the later model flasks which you have pictures of. Never know the early ones were painted yellow. I was a initially bit surprised that there's no buffer wagon between the flask and the locomotive but being steam there's a tender so I guess that would serve just as well.
i think you are correct, the tender would act as a substantial barrier wagon in the event of a derailment or crash
This video made me quite nostalgic. My father helped start up the Hunterson A reactor in Scotland and spent his last years travelling to different reactors writing the manual for the decommisioning crews . He said there were more people working on the reactor after it was shut down then there ever were when it was running. He was once involved with an incident with a flask where someone had drained the water from it without telling anyone, so when it was opened at the bottom of a fuel pool, a giant air bubble came out and there was a mad scramble to run away before it reached the surface.
that sound like a very worrying moment, but all were ok ?
@@old_duffers_chuffers I think it must have been very unpleasant at the time, but by the time I was told about it, it was a funny story about the silly people at Dad's work.
Nice work. Did these flasks contain nuclear waste? Cheers Joachim
Yes, these were used to transport spent fuel rods from the power stations to the post-processing site where it would be separated into different materials . While technically "waste", part of the purpose of these reactors was to produce weapons grade Plutonium as a byproduct. 90% of the volume of the flask is filled with water, with the "hot" radioactive material in the very center. When filling and emplying the flask, it is sunk in a deep pool and robot arms are used to put the fuel rods in and take them out again.
@@jmackmcneill Spent fuel rods are loaded into a skip which is then placed in the flask. You do produce plutonium during the fuel cycle but it undergoes fission so it's actually useful for producing energy rather than for making weapons.
Enjoyed your latest video you done thanks for sharing DD.
Glad you enjoyed it. More are on the way
@@old_duffers_chuffersGreat and thanks very much for replying to my comment. Like the work you are doing so l subscribe to your channel .Thanks DD.
I'd also be quite interested in a kit mainly to have something unique on the layout-to-be
Great work. Still interested in one if you're planning on making a few to sell in the future.
if i do make some it will be a kit, minus wheels, buffers couplings. I have tried to get Rapido, Accurascale and others interested but just get zero response 👎🙁
@@old_duffers_chuffers A kit is fine with me. That's a shame I would have though Accurascale especially would take this on as they doing the "powering Britain" line on things, I even suggested one to them. Fran is usually good at replying as well, don't give up.😁
brilliant work :)
That is some impressive do-it-all-yourself. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant. I have a Monoprice 3d filament printer which I purchased a few years ago. I should have held out fir the recon but at the time I was told it is a bit messy. Great job📐🖊👍
still a useful machine, resin printer are better for detail , but there's lots out there to download and print 👍
Superb! I'd like to see that in 7mm (O)🤔👍😊👍
I haven't modeled in 7mm so i'm not sure how it would scale up . how long is a typical axle
I would buy two of these with pleasure Sir!!Excellent Model!!
Glad you like them!
Terrific work. Which software dud you use to model the Gantry?
I used Rhino 7 , its the software we have at work
I only came across your channel today and I am so impressed. Your skills with CAD, 3D printing and laser cutting are revelations as to how far the model railway hobby is progressing. It is astonishing that you have so few subscribers and views. Your presentations are excellent.
Thanks , the CAD skills are as a result of many year making models of buildings for architects. As a profession we discovered lasercutting 20 years ago and started to get into 3D printing 12 years or so back. But it's great to be able to use my skill base for my hobby too.
Brilliant job, been looking at these for a while in the hope they become RTR. I'd buy one as a kit or RTR if you decide to sell.
I may make some later
Really like the CAD drawings along with the very detailed explanation and the picture in picture run round.
Have subscribed to your channel, it's a masterclass.
Just the job, very impressive.
Absolutely fantastic. The best, neatest and most professional mimic panel I've ever seen, truly a thing of beauty. I've never seen a printed circuit board used in a control panel for a model railway before, but the neatness, along with the D sockets and plugs take your work to the next level. I also admired your use of eyelets and cable ties to keep the wiring neat and tidy below the basboard. Outstanding quality of work. Do you produce these panels commercially?
Glad you liked it! it took a fair bit of drawing and planning
Wow that looks fantastic 👏 superb. I worked alongside these at my place of work and that looks identical. Put me down for 2 if you decide to make a few to sell 😉😁
I'd better get on and finish it
Excellent work, when are you going to market them?
Not sure yet
Really impressive build and inspiring, wish I had the time to design and build models to the standard you have achieved. I like the way you take the viewer through the steps to make the model.
Thank you very much! I usually draw up the models over lunchtime at work, way too busy at home with family stuff
Have you got the plans or
I have my 3d drawing and stl file for printing it is on thingiverse , search for "signal gantry components"
Nice video you done lots going on thanks DD.
Excellent detail! Just how long did it take?
20 hours or so build time , but I have 5 or 6 projects on the go at once, so it was spread over a couple of month
I don't want to be amazingly critical, but the sound is only representing the exhaust from one cylinder. It should, as Peter Smith writes in Footplate over the Mendips on driving Black a Five, have 4 beats to a bar, or revolution. Each cylinder delivers two beats per revolution, your driving rig shows very clearly only two beats.. Can the chip be reprogrammed to do this?
sadly that what you get with a "cheap" hornby TTS chip, and you can't reprogram them . I may upgrade the chip later
Great video and review. Out of 9 wagons only one screw in mine actually fitted correctly into the counter sunk hole. I suspect screw head outer diameter too large?
Yes I'm of the same opinion but didn't what to grind the screw heads down in case I had other issues and had to return the wagons . They're only 0.5mm too large. Very poor quality control at KR
If this gets repeated it’s because I’m an old duffer, your idea is to good not to steal & probably by the company that makes the point motor
With the greatest of respect to my old Duffer you know someone is going to steel your idea as it’s to bloody good not to
I don't mind people printing them for their own use. And having been published on a reputable medium ie. You tube, it is cover by intellectual property law
I take it you got a load for the one that was missing
yep , 6 emails later!
The wagons look good but the build quality is not there. I have heard about the bogie screw issues and missing loads before people are paying a lot of money at least the manufacturers can do is make sure it's fit for purposes. I brought K R Models blue GT3 a while back got it home placed it on my layout to run it in . The model lasted 20 minutes before the motor gave out the lights were on but no movement. I took it back to Rails of Sheffield they tired to get it to run even putting in a DCC decoder in still nothing so was refunded. I doubt I will buy another KR Models product again .
I have a GT3 also, very weak pulling power . I won't buy a loco again . the front bogie screw had the same issue on that too. 1 of the bogie screws on the wagons was stripped as well.
