At Beckenham, Kent in 1941 the local AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service) were called out to a serious air raid in the East End of London. On arrival at the scene of the air raid they exited from the Appliance but unbeknown to them above suspended from a building was parachute mine. It exploded killing the 14 fireman. There is a commemorative plaque on the old Town Hall at Beckenham. Hero's all! RIP!

    Income Tax (American Ambulance Members)
    HC Deb 25 January 1944 vol 396 c560W
§Mr. Perkins asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether members of the American Ambulance of Great Britain are assessed to pay Income Tax on moneys received from that organisation.
§Sir J. Anderson I am advised that the members are liable to tax. I must point out that the American Ambulance is not part of the U.S. Forces but is a voluntary organisation employing persons resident in this country.
