This was originally part of a video on making a Richmond laboratory cartridge. I removed the paper selection and weight test and combined them into this video. When I find the correct envelope pattern for the cartridge I will make a separate video.

You have mentioned a couple times about a kit that you have. I can’t seem to find a link or description of where to look for it. Could you please point me in the right direction thx

Would the spray graphite mould release work in your pellet moulds?
@michaelredman5750 not sure, sounds messy. You don't want any kind of grease are oil on the powder. It's a very fine dusting of dry graphite.
Man, new innovations in everything--well done!
Thank you. Appreciate the walk through
Excellent. I can see the advantage of doing 6 at a time; I'll have to try it both one at a time and this way to see which is easier for me. This is a remarkable improvement, it kind of makes paper cartridges obsolete.
So I’m a Tintypist and collodion artist. I get collodion Nitrocellulose diluted in ether and alcohol) from several photographic chemical supply houses. You could further dilute it with either ether or grain alcohol
@@toddharrington7864 i did look into getting some photo collodion. The price was higher than the glue. I was thinking of getting some just to see if there's a difference. What's the best place to get it.
Brilliant! And thanks for the shout out on the idea and on the Ordnance Dept. report--I am so glad someone is making use of that.
@@Schlachtschule thanks, half of it was your idea. Those old historical documents do come in handy. Glad you found it.
I can't find the clamps you are using when you apply the glue to the nitrate paper on your website. The "Hazard clamps" for .44 cartridges.
I love this! Nicely done.
Where can I get your box notcher? Hand cutting, I cannot always cut straight and I sometimes end up with irregular shapes.
Can you make the formers available as a kit? I do not have a 3D printer.
I sent you an email asking about your bullet holder and glue container do you still sell them John
guess I'm out of the loop but I'm just wondering why one would want to wrap bullets with kno3 paper.
Just a note. This isn't nitrating. You ARE making flash paper, but you aren't nitrating cellulose. Making ntirocellulose would require nitric acid and sulphuric acid. You could also use the potassium nitrate instead of the nitric acid but either of the ways would require some safety precautions.
It is virtually impossible to really nitrate paper at home, at least here in Europe. The chemicals you would need aren't available to the consumer. And it is a somewhat dangerous process. Shown in the video is impregnating the paper with potassium nitrite christals. These form in between and on top of the fibers of the paper, but do not help the paper burn. You can use potassium nitrite and paper to make something that burns very well, by charring the paper up and adding sulfur. It's called black powder. But in this form, the christals most of the time are too large anyways and don't help or slow down the burning. Ral nitrited paper can be found as flash paper at a magician store. But it is sold wet, only the needed amount may be taken out the pack and dried just before use, and it must not be transported when dry, because it is very unstable. Sometimes it burst into flames on its own just because. So it can not be used as a cartridge hull for black powder, the cartridge might go off while in storage any time.
Very excited to learn about the skin cartridges
peak youtube content. we need more of this
i thought it's about nitration lol
That’s a lot better than coffee filters. Simple and easy. Thank you.
Hello, could you tell us please how you nitrated the tissue paper? ;) Did you Cook it in the solution, or did you just put it in some warm solution? Because it easily tears apart when cooking it 😂🙈 Thx in advance!
I did several layers together. Soak a stack, pull it out, let it dry and peel apart. The other way is to lay the thin paper on some widow screen and spray it with a weak solution of KNo3 in an old spray bottle. Do this 2 times on a hot sunny day. (dries fast). Clear the spray nozzle with water or crystals will clog it up. I will post a video on how to do this method.
@@crossencartridge6403 Thanks for the hint! :) I just tried this method and have to say, it works fine! Used a mixture of saturated solution with about 50 degree temp. (celcius) and sprayed it on both sides. Burns even better as I thought it would, so perfect for me! THX again! :)
Keep going. Thanks for the information. We are learning with your experience.
Why, do you need to nitrate the paper if you are waterproofing with nitrate glue?
I have tried it with out nitrating and had a lot of unburnt paper. The nitrating adds oxygen for a more complete burn. Nitrocellulose glue also needs oxygen to burn.
This looks amazing! Did you share the files, or are they for sale?
The STL files can be found on my Printables page www.printables.com/model/905170-john-s-adams-cartridge-chocker
@@crossencartridge6403 thanks! I will have to get to work on these at some point. I had seen the patent drawing in the Roundball to Rimfire books & thought it would be amazing to have one of these.
Same thing happened to me LOL.
Printables page? Looking for it, but couldn’t find.

@@crossencartridge6403 thanks, I didn’t dig far enough to find these the first time. Will have to get on the computer here to be able to make the download simpler.
Thanks 🙏
I'm curious, did Hazard actually make cartridges for rifle-muskets during the Civil War, or was this an experiment of your own to see if it would work? I know they made revolver cartridges and also heard that they made artillery charges as well, but hadn't heard that they made musket rounds.
They made cartridges for 52cal sharps, 56cal colt revolving rifles, 58cal muskets, and 69cal muskets.
I know when have to pull out a bullet from the cylinder, the first is put some water to deactivate the BP, and then with a screw it is possible to pull out the bullet. How you think do this procedure if the powder is waterproof?
I am late to the video However, I have an 1859 sharps Berdan with the set trigger. When I first got it, I had been watching Mike Beliveau on Duelist 1954. He suggested that if you purchase one of these guns to send it to a gunsmith and have the chamber and block worked on to eliminate excessive gas escaping. I sent mine to a gunsmith named Larry Flees in Michigan. He did an excellent job. His work sends 99% of the gases down the barrel. Fouling at the breech is almost non-existent. Something to think about.
Could you cary these on a gun belt like you can with brass cartridges?
Your making duplex rounds outstanding sir
Why is he compressing?? Not needed
It's to make sure it is completely seated. It also causes the bottom of the crack open. I can feel a slight crunch. How many sold compressed cartridges have you shot? Besides, it doesn't hirt anything.
How do you mix it?
Subscribed! I have to watch all your videos now!!
I watched Mark Hubbs video on testing the cartridges you show in this video. In his video he gave a address for your store for the molds. My question is are you going to make available your yellow jigs for folding and scoring. I was thrilled to see the molds in your store but they are out of stock,(darn it😮) I don't have a 3d printer but I am working on the boxes with your pdf files Thank you for all your wonderful work on the cartridges of the past.
I'm making more hazard sets. It takes 10 hours to print them. I will print some box jigs and put them on the store.
Thank you very much!
Your channel is absolutely fantastic! Great!!!!!!!
Why 7 caps? In case one is dropped or lost?
Quite interesting. Why wrap the cartridge with silk? Doesn’t the glue hold the bullet and powder charge secure enough?
Following your instructions, I got good results. thank you for your commitment and effort to share your knowledge and work with us.
Good to hear, thank you for trying them out.
Here's and original in good condition www.horsesoldier.com/products/firearms/cartridges-and-gun-tools/45629
Given your research into these cartridges, how authentic is the method that most other sellers of paper cartridge formers utilize......the 2 piece paper envelope and the way the paper is wrapped around the mandrel, such as the Manley mandrel?
This is how the original Johnston and dows were constructed. Each manufacturer had different ways of making the envelopes. All the modern formers are not historically correct for the Johnston and Dow cartridge.
Will the cap be able to pinch through the rolled and twisted end of the cartridge? Just made some of these and I am a little concerned about that, because the center of the twist ist fairly thick...
@@crossencartridge6403 Just saw this original JD cartridge. www.horsesoldier.com/products/firearms/cartridges-and-gun-tools/45629. If you zoom in, you can see some twisting of the paper at the bottom of the cartridge tube. I also ask.....Will modern percussion caps fire these cartridges made by the method that you demonstrate? The bases do seem a little thick.
It would be interesting to see a needle rifle version of these cartridges
You know. I suggested that those who use old needle fire rifles, use the nitrocellulose flue to seal the cartridge, stiffen it and waterproof it. Now I see that that trick is old hat and already known LOL
Looks like you can use this to make yoyr own "pyrodex Pellet" knock offs
I’m just curious- why would one consider pyrodex in place of genuine BP?
@@ryanlemons7831 Pyrodex was once the only thing available for most Black Powder shooters, as the real thing was not to be had. It has remained popular because it is slightly more powerful (faster velocities) and ver slightly easier to clean up
What size is that drill, John?
25/64th gives the right about of pinch on the 36colt bullet when the wire is placed between the two halfs.
Like a reel loader for fishing line, or a coil winder! Do you have different lead screws and fly heads for different width ribbons?
The gearing advances the cotton tape by 3mm for every turn of the winding mandrel. This allows the maximum number of turns on the mandrel while keeping the tape flat. Changing the mandrel size will change the cut ribbon length up to 5 inches max.
Such a complicated machine for such a simple job...... Holy crap thats slick..... Outstanding!
After cutting hundreds of them, ya start looking for easier ways to get it done.
Mein gott in himmel, you have a machine for everything! But how many Eley cartridges do you go through??
Their one of my favorite cartridges. I like to stock up. I'm thinking of putting a 31cal eley can kit together.
I have watched these videos again but I can NOT find where to print the labels from.

@@crossencartridge6403Thank you sir. This is just what I have spent the last 2 years looking for. Now all I need is the dimensions of the box folder and groover so my son can make it for me. He has a 3D printer.
This video is just what I have been searching for. Both my revolvers are 36 cal., One is a Colt replica the other a Griswold and Gunnison, so just using the Colt label would be period correct wouldn't it?
Yes, for the colt. The griswald and gunnison is a confederate revolver. Johnston and Dow was of union manufacture.
You keep turning out great content, John, thank you!
good job dude,, well done..
