RJ Sheep Farm
Приєднався 14 лют 2024
I raise sheep in Alberta Canada. I run approximately 300 Rideau Arcott ewes, and lamb from January-March. I grow the majority of my feed, and run most farm operations alone. My sheep are on pasture in the summer, and confined in the winter.
I'm making videos of what I do day to day. I hope you enjoy.

Organizing Newborn and Orphaned Lambs
🇨🇦 I have a question. When we have to drench a calf I always hold my hand on their throat to make sure the tube is going down the correct pipe. Otherwise the calf will be drowned . Is there any special thing you watch for when drenching aka tubing a lamb?
🇨🇦I just found your channel. I was watching your A Day of Lambing Season in Canada. I really enjoyed it and have subscribed. I see I might have some binge watching ahead of me 😊 Your farm is neat and tidy and I can see you love your animals Heather D
My cows Reed canary grass hay made right 😊
What the name of that song in the background? Nice video, thanks!
My allergies just flared up watching you blow off the baler. Yikes. Although watching that tractor operation was pretty awesome, I really enjoyed that
What model is the tractor. I really like that interface. I’m used to the older case new holland tractors with the 18speed power shift but that looks slick
Good video. I run a Vermeer and I find that the very outside layer is pretty soft. And core is like block of cement
I know I like my new Vermeer baler way better than the john Deere baler I got rid of. Heavier built too. Quite a few guys run new holland around here. They seem to like them.
Honestly only thing holding us back on them is the color. Was hot in 1983 but not anymore, plus this NH dealer is hot after our business.
Nice comparison vid. I too like the new holland bales when I’m purchasing for my sheep as much as yes I would love to feed tmr I have to buy in all my feed so dry hay is the way I found is best 🤨
They sure make a nice bale!
That bale coming out on the NH was much smoother. In my opinion. cool video Buddy.
Thank you!
Was the tractor able to full fully from one side?
Nope, good catch. Only able to run 80% loads
I remember spreading manure once and the feed chain came off.. when it was full... then dad and I spent the next couple hours shoveling it all out. Luckily it was no where near as big as that thing.
I would die if this thing plugged
2:45 “this things made for Dutch people for sure” 🤣🤣
Is silage bad on the bag i have katahdins and people say that
Ah yes. Manure spreading in a cabless tractor... that was my favourite too haha. Nice operation of the tractor buddy, keep it up.
Yeah I really should wear a helmet but I duck real fast if something comes at me
Great video! Thanks for posting. Really awesome to see the dogs doing what they need to do. Getting dogs for our farm too. Too many coyotes, bears, and foxes for me to feel comfortable. Question - the floor of your barn, is it cement/concrete or dirt? Debating what to do in our future lamb barn. It’s a lean to off our barn now where the tractor etc lives but I’m going to convert it next year and not sure what to do about the floor. Thanks!
Dirt. Sheep pack the ground so hard that the manure pack just slides off the ground. Obviously cement is always better but I've been using dirt for years.
@ thank you!
@@RJSheepFarm I think cement floor is bad for the legs and the hoof. I good natural floor is the best, important thing is to have a good drainage system for water/urine.
Looks like you should’ve been weaned them lambs
I really enjoy your videos! I used to have just 3 or 4 sheep and the lambs are real cute! You mentioned that Fendt tractor being a nice tractor. Well I have worked at a farm equipment dealership all my working years and yes a cab would be nice but Your feather ahead with your John Deere. The Fendts are awful winter starters, resale value really sucks and unreal over priced and parts are crazy expensive. No I did not work for a John Deere dealer, just being honest is all! Sure loved that You mentioned that You went to Bible study, way to go!!👍🙏 Keep up the good work!
Hey! My husband and I are sheep farmers in Sask. We enjoy watching your videos. I'm curious, how old are your lambs when you wean? I cant recall if you've mentioned it in a previous video.
Thanks for watching! I aim for 75-90 days, I keep them on longer than most rideau producers.
Hey man. I am a phony sheep farmer, I only have 22 currently, but I’m in northern UT and run my own fencing business for my work. I am 27, hard worker, and would love to come up and bring my welder & donate a few days of work to your place & see how a real sheep ranch operates. Not lookin for money, just lookin for a working vacation to learn how you scaled this whole sheep thing up to full size. Real impressed with your success
No such thing as a phony sheep farmer! Who knows what the future brings, keep it in mind. Thanks for watching!
I love watching animals get let out to pasture in the spring. They get so excited! Reminds me of letting cows out at the Dairy in Spring, they jump and run around like they're calves again. How big is that bucket on your tractor?
Spring time is the best time. Unfortunately we are back to frozen. Bucket is about treeeeeefiddy
Great work, keep it up. Just a question, how soon does the 2nd lamb arrive after the first is born?
Have you noticed a difference between crops that get sheep manure and ones that get say, cow manure? Does one do better than the other?
Do you breed offseason as well?
16:33 what temp? I’m in New Brunswick. I don’t think we get near as cold as most of Alberta. But this is the first time I’ve seen someone do a mostly outdoor system like yours so I’m trying to get a fair temp comparison! Thanks ☺️
Probably around -20. We don't get the humidity like you guys though. We have days of -30 or worse especially with the wind. Lambs can take cold, but they can not take wind. Good wind fence and shelter is key
@ thank you!!
0:33 the intro of this video is so relatable 😂🙈 “this don’t work, this fell off” story of my life hahahah
Excellent video well explained, I've farmed sheep in the UK for many years and have always weaned my may born lambs end of July after the first draw to market, Ewe lambs over 35 kilos are kept for breeding 🐑
Nice info, thanks for watching!
3:46 my border collie is a coward, maybe I should learn to rope lol
0:02 knew that was an old truck immediately! Nice. I’m in a 92 dodge myself
That Joy is one tough woman. That's awesome. That sorting squeeze (or whatever you call it).. is pretty sweet.
Joy will outwork the best of them
Stupid uneducated comment about the baler. Baling two different types of forage one which is light and big stems the other which is dense and small stems which do you is going to be heavier? I have a 469 silage special jd and it will put out 2200 lb bales at 45% moisture all day
You sound like a typical Deere customer. Thanks for watching
Wondering why you dont have a decoquinate in your creep? Our supplier puts it in and its essential to make sure every lamb is getting it
I do, and add additional besides it
Hello, i was wondering where in canada are you located?
We need more videos rj
those ear tags are primarily for tracking Scrappies the way i understand it.
Hey Man, I have been enjoying your content. I was hoping if you can make a video on how one can start lamb farm as a beginner. I love animals and loves to be around them but I am new to Alberta, Canada and have no idea how to start. 😊
Hey rj looking g to buy ewe lambs for start up business .i have emailed you if you have time give me a call
“Parental involvement is very important.” Am I watching a family counselling video or a sheep production video 😅? All good & very true, Ryley👍!
25:06 them lambs big enough to be weaned they just as big as the ones in the bottle pen that looks pathetic lambs that big still on milk 😅
Another great video! Look forward to more, coming from the mountains of North Carolina where there are no sheep!😂
I don’t know about everyone else but I love watching sheep doing whatever, they’re so interesting! So don’t worry about reposting things because that’s what your viewers are here for. I look forward to seeing you post, you’re an interesting guy who knows so much about farming
We bought a few replacements ewes from a farm and they cut the ID tag (between the numbers) after tagging it in the ear so it’s just less likely to snag on something/harder to get caught on something
Thats a good idea!
glad you have some new videos very entertaining
🐶🐑👍😊
Hey rj great videos . Looking to get some ewe lambs from you I’ll email you with my info . Thank you
When is your lambing season
Another great video dude. I always wonder, what Is something you could use on the sheep farm that would make some aspect of the farming just that much easier? I'm not talking a heated shop or a new fancy tractor... something smaller scale but makes a big difference
Gotta love a farmer that can operate a tractor as well as you do. Well done my friend. Also those feed bunks look awesome, did you buy or build them?
When they cut teeth I would introduce creep then wean whenever their eating well because the milk only make them grow up to a certain point then the creep makes them fill out faster so 90 days way to long unless you don’t have the money or feed to support the lambs right away
Great information Keep posting as your channel is very entertaining
