  • Follow along the exhilarating day of chores/happenings on the sheep farm, in the midst of winter lambing. If you are watching this in summer, only a few short days left until the frigid doom returns.
    Thanks for tuning in!

Doing great, I'll be tuning in. Can't wait for some good summer grazing videos as well. I'm down in the states so summer is full swing. I'd like to see a few videos on the numbers and paperwork as well. Lambing rates, amount of ewes bred, feed costs, etc. We are in the process of starting up a rideau confinement operation we are 100% hair pasture based right now.

Thanks for the comment Tyde. Not sure how in depth I want to get on numbers in the future, still getting used to seeing my face on the internet. I am filming several months behind, which is by choice. Confinement Rideau is work, plain and simple. Thankful I don't do it that way. I live very close to the largest packer in western canada, and our prices in Canada are very strong. This week finished lambs are around $350/hd (expect this to crash shortly due to season). Roughly for this lambing there were 3 groups. 120/120/40 for 280 total +/-. I lambed about 260, but 25 of those that didn't lamb were open for 2 years in a row so they were just bad sheep. I ended up with about 440 live, marketable lambs. Keeping about 100 back for now, trying to rebuild with some better genetics. Thanks for tuning in, I really appreciate it. Any other questions ask away.

New subscriber here! I found your vlog and I think you’re doing a great job with the sheep, seems like you’re out in the barn from daylight til dark, tough job I bet! Also, your vlogs are longer than most, which is great! 😊

How long are your lambs and ewes in the barn before they are moved out?

I realize you are way past lambing but...for next time....Letting ewes run out of water is the fastest way to decrease milk production. Better to install tank float valves in your stock tanks and gravity feed. Then you only have to ensure the water in your main tank is higher than the float valve. Dare Tank-O-Matic Float Valves work great. You can dose a ewe with oxytocin several days in a row to boost milk production in low production ewes when they've just lambed. Why don't you put your poorly outdoor lamb in with your weaned lambs inside? That fast forward lambing was priceless. Last bit of advice: barn cameras. Bet your glad the grass is up now!
