    If you were to spray vinegar on the clean steel and it turns rust-colored, is it rust or ferric acetate? If the rust-colored dust can easily be wiped off, is that an indication that it is just ferric acetate? I plan on getting a clean piece of sheet metal tomorrow and spray it with vinegar to see what happens. My concern is I have a van bed that I have ground and ground and ground, used rust dissolver and just yesterday, vinegar and baking soda. It looked like the whole thing flash-rusted. Some of it wiped off and washed off at the car wash. But there was plenty that had to be ground out. I can't tell if the vinegar rusted the metal or if there was unseen rust that the vinegar converted into ferric acetate. Maybe you know the answer?

    Looks nice well built, but poor design, should use angle iron so that bullets will deflect and not hit square tubing straight on, also need guard made of angle iron for top. Im not a professional but I use mine and the bullets deflect nicely when you miss the target and don't destroy the stand, Also the round plate extensions need angle iron shields otherwise you will destroy them first time out

    What cause a bead to be thick looking on the top instead of flatter like yours

    • @weldingbusinesssecrets
      @weldingbusinesssecrets 4 місяці тому

      Heat and penetration mostly. It can also be the joint being welded. For example if you have two pieces of flat stock and butt them together without beveling them your weld will more than likely be think instead of flat.

    Fantastic story for people that don’t know any better. No question that welding is a great trade as that I have a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing and numerous certifications for many different areas of welding. Chances of making it to a million dollar welding business in completely unrealistic. If you want be successful in that industry I would suggest getting all your certifications and college degree in science, engineering is more realistic in this world because only hard work and determination pays off. Great introductory video on the subject!

    I feel I should mention, even though GMAW doesn’t produce slag, it can produce small silicone spots or islands on the beads, and if they aren’t cleaned off, they can cause the same problems as slag.

    I have lots of soldering experience, but ZERO welding experience and I would LOVE to have a welder in the garage for various emergency repairs. I first need to learn the difference between welders like tig, or whatever and so on .... Then go from there.

    • @whogavehimafork
      @whogavehimafork 3 місяці тому

      The various welding types is really what overwhelmed me initially but I was fortunate enough that a coworker gave me a crash course in wire welding. I would argue that it's not totally necessary to learn the different types if you just need to get started. A flux core wire welder like this, in my opinion, is the absolute easiest and most user friendly way to start.

    Great video, Trevor! My buddy and I work for a company that is in the custom railing and custom office furniture business. We love what we do (he is the lead fabricator in our steel shop and I am in project management/installation), but with where the company is going and ownership not treating employees super well, we are in the conceptual stages of starting our own thing on the side while we still work full time. Our goal is to develop the side hustle into something full time so we can win back our time, do things we love, and make what we're worth so we can better take care of our families.

    • @weldingbusinesssecrets
      @weldingbusinesssecrets 9 місяців тому

      I would love to say running a business can win you time, give you the time to do what you love and make you what you are worth. At times it is quite the opposite. Right now you are an operator, once you become a business owner most, if not all of your waking moments will be spent working in the business. That is if you run a good business. It is NOT easy and not for the weak. I’ve given up everything I love to do in trade to grow my business. At times I don’t make any money but at times I do win and that’s when it is worth it. Don’t let the internet make you believe running a business is easy. It’s not by any means. But it is possible and it is a grind. Everyday. So be ready, it’s a drastic jump to go from operator to business owner.

    • @ryanmagnuson4330

      @@weldingbusinesssecrets all of this is understood. I have a small business background and have worked in small businesses all my life. Getting screwed over by an employer who doesn't treat you well or truly wants what's best for you is worst than all the heartache and difficulty of being your own boss. You're giving them your time and the fruits of your labor are never recognized. Times this by 40-60 years and you have NOTHING to show for your body of work and what you have put in. The risk is worth it to me.
