Well The Mercruiser Outdrive Is Blown Now...
Well, we spent a lot of time adding in new parts and not a lot of time enjoying them... Fixed our drained battery/starting issue so that's behind us but now we have a new issue. Alpha 1 Gen 2 outdrive blew. Gears are gone and there's metal everywhere, now to find a replacement one is the challenge.

Well, didn't go great but could've been way worse! Bad alternator, dead battery... easy fix. Parts on order, swapping them out asap and getting back out there for take 2. Boat absolutely ripped! Awesome to see all the hard work finally paying off with this project.

    Brian quick tip when boat isn’t in use you should trim your motor down to take the stress off the bellows, with the motor not trimmed down you have the bellows stretched and when the motor is trimmed the bellows are in a relaxed position. No need to replace them no sooner than every four years.

    Pretty sure the same thing happend to me last week, was out on the lake for 5 hours and running good then randomly just stoped and the motor reved up, wouldn't shift into fwd or reverse while engine was on. With the engine off it seems like it shifts but I haven't opened that top cap yet to take a look as I'm gone for the week. Did find a guy selling a used but clean Alpha one Gen one for 100$ I'm going to replace mine with, mine has a crack at the bottom that JB Weld didn't hold up and it was empty on oil which I think caused mine to fail. Hope you get yours fixed up!

      @@brianbluemkejr it all depends on your plans for the boat I guess. If you are going to keep it - the new outdrive is definitely worth it. If you are going to fix\enjoy\sell\move on, than a used one seems more reasonable. @@brianbluemkejr wow, the price is really sweet! not so sure about 1.47 ratio though. That number sounds way too low, like for a diesel engine with low rpm and high torque. The petrol alphas usually come in 1.64-1.85-1.92. Dunno, ask where he got it and if it was from\for a diesel, that's probably how he blew the motor (with excessive load) and the same might happen to yours.

  • @andreireal9158
    @andreireal9158 3 місяці тому

    Congrats on the first launch, the happiest moment in every boat project! Hard shifting could be the mercruiser shift interrupt switch not working. It's a little switch near the shift cable linkage, that kills the motor whenever you go in forward or reverse gear, making it easy on the lever, cable and gearcase. Check if it is pressed while shifting and the motor dies when so. Also noticed you switched from sitting to standing while behind the helm - same with mine boat, standing gives much better view and control. But on a full cruising day where you go like for 3-5 hrs it sucks, heared there are cushions for this type of seats to make standing more comfortable. If steering is hard and requires 2 hands, check the steering cable, also torq steering and prop walk on mine on low speed is pretty annoying. In the end, having over 300 hrs of runtime with similar boat I found out, that the passengers enjoy it much more than the captain, so driving this thing is kinda like work for me and fun for them)

    • @brianbluemkejr
      @brianbluemkejr 3 місяці тому

      thank you! yes it was a long time coming lol. You got me questioning the shift interrupt switch... don't recall seeing one but it for sure doesn't kill the engine when I shift. I'll have to look into that and follow back up. It almost felt more like it was jammed little bit? I'll have to pop the engine cover and take a look when in the water next time. Steering is little tight but it's more so just difficult to turn when standing just because of the angle of it all. Got a steering knob in the mail so that'll fix it. I have a bunch of new parts going in now, next video will be out soon!

      @@brianbluemkejr that switch is in the motor hatch, where the shifting cable is connected to a plastic assembly, near the spring loaded rod, standard on every mercruiser i\o drives. On mine the switch itself was disconnected, it was clicking and working but did not kill the engine as it should. When reconnected, the shifting became smooth and easy, like on outboards.

    The teak hatch played really nice! I need to upgrade mine, never thought on making it grated, but now that's a nice alternative to a carpet cover or a solid plywood piece. Also the carpet inside the wet storage compartment really added some "civility" to this otherwise unpleasant place) The floor on the closeup looks so-so...I'd consider returning the carpet back, or covering with faux teak.

    Also hate the roller gelcoating part - the first layers always look like crap, in contrast to auto paints spraying with compressor/hvlp, where the results look near pefect right from the start. And to get the desired quality you have to sand a lot. But the good part about the floor is that ypu can always cover it back with carpet or fake teak.

    • @brianbluemkejr
      @brianbluemkejr 3 місяці тому

      Very true, want to start messing around with paint sprayers to see if that can help make this alittle easier. Curious how the gelcoat will spray though since it’s such a thick consistency.

    • @andreireal9158
      @andreireal9158 3 місяці тому

      @@brianbluemkejr I sprayed mine no problem, using 1.4mm HVLP with filter removed. Leave the can in the sun or preheat in the bucket with hot water, than thin the gelcoat with styrene and wax solution up to 10% and it will be fine.

    Awesome job. Gives me confidence that I can do it to mine as well. What did you fill the original ladder holes with ?

    • @brianbluemkejr
      @brianbluemkejr 3 місяці тому

      So I applied tape to the back side of the hole (from inside where the motors at), then I mixed up some fiberglass resin with fiberglass chop strand to make a thick putty like mixture. Used that to completely fill in the holes to bind it back into the rest of the swim deck. Super easy to do. Pretty sure I covered it in a previous video too from the beginning of the Monterey series. Plus, use the topcoat non skid paint and it hides any imperfections as well!

    antifouling paint on a trailer kept boat is kinda no-no, but than again - it's much easier to paint this bottom than to sand it clear and then polish to a shine.

      Exactly, completely agree. Boat was kept in the water most of its life but not the plan now for me atleast. Bottom painting it was already difficult enough let alone sanding it and repolishing it lol
