Oh Peter, You're So Nice: Jim Dapogny's Chicago Jazz Band with Hal Smith drums and vocal
Another excellent (if lesser known) tune from the Jazzology LP J-120.
The band: Jim Dapogny, leader, piano; Paul Klinger, cnt; Bob Smith, tbn; Peter Freeman, clt; Russ Whitman, clt, tenor sax; Rod McDonald, guitar, banjo; Ed Wilkinson, bass, tuba; Hal Smith, drums, vocal. Thanks go to the musicians and also label owner George H. Buck for this wonderful music.
As detailed in the video please take a look at the Syncopated Times website; this amazing jazz magazine has at last achieved charitable status which I hope will ensure it is around for a very long time to come. It is a truly exceptional publication. Please subscribe and support it.
Wishing you a healthy and Happy New Year.
Enjoy.
Peace to all (and love and sympathy to all those affected by the tragic event in New Orleans)

A superb interpretation of a well known jazz tune that brings freshness and delight. This band comprises first class musicians- and it shows; the whole album is wonderful. Thanks go to George H. Buck who brought so much music to us through the GHB and Jazzology labels. Friendless Blue/Fidgety Feet - Lu Watters Yerba Buena Jazz Band - live broadcast.

A great example of how this band played live. I have struggled to work out when the recording was made. The only version of Fidgety Feet in Sam Linschooten's handwritten discography is from October 1946 but it is shown as a KGO broadcast. There is no exact personnel but the probable line-up is Lu Watters, tpt; Turk Murphy, tbn; Bob Helm, cl; Wally Rose, p; Harry Mordecai, bj; Dick Lammi, bass; ...

A USA release of the British Decca album - Back To The Delta. Ken Colyer, Leader, tpt; Ed O'Donnell, tbn; Bernard (Acker) Bilk, cl; Diz Disley, bjo; Dick Smith, bass; Stan Greg, d. The album has excellent sleeve notes by Alexis Korner who plays on the Skiffle Group sides. The video includes a sad picture of the Lord Napier Public House which boasted to be 'South London's Leading Jazz Pub' where...

I have uploaded almost all of the 22 songs played at the Grand Rapids, MI concert in December 1957. Whilst there are flaws in the recording, hearing the band live and experiencing the fun of their performance is simply wonderful. Entertainment, and jazz, at its best. The band: Bob Scobey, Leader, tpt; Jack Buck, Doug Skinner, tbn; Pete Dovidio, cl; Clyde Pound, p; Clancy Hayes, bj, vocal; Tom B...

A 'comment' request that I am very happy to oblige; a great jazz tune and a band performance that highlights the remarkable talent of the musicians in this band. There is often a focus on the fact that Lu Watters and the YBJB launched the Great Jazz Revival but this track demonstrates that their success was in large part due to their ability as musicians. I will avoid the temptation to single o...

Another track from the SFTJF Lu Watters 1949-50 CD produced by the SFTJF. King Chanticleer - written by Nat D, Ayer in 1913, interestingly Mr. Ayer was born in the USA in 1887 but emigrated to England in 1911. He also composed the music to 'If You Were The Only Girl In The World'. The personnel are detailed in the video - both on the CD and in the image at 0.43. I have exhausted my use of super...

A jazz standard given a relaxed treatment by the great Lu Watters. Although a member of the YBJB that made its first records in December 1941, it wasn't until Clancy Hayes rejoined the band in 1948 that he made vocal recordings with a Lu Watters lead band. This excellent CD was produced by the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation which successfully preserved the music and history of the mu...

AS announced, this is a live broadcast from Hambone Kelly's, 208 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito. Released by the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation on MMRC CD10. The SFTJF released over a dozen high quality CDs and did a real service to jazz by preserving a vast amount of music and memorabilia. As detailed in the end slide, the SFTJF collection is now held at Stanford University and is wel...

A superb tune by an equally superb jazz band. Daybreak Blues was composed by the great San Francisco reed player Bob Helm, a key member of the Great Jazz Revival and lifetime musician. Robert Marshall Helm also played with many of the second and third wave jazz musicians including many in this excellent band. He was active into his late eighties and died aged 88 on 1 September 2002. This track ...

How about Christmas Blues?
Thanks for the suggestion but I can't locate this one. I will take this upload down as there is an annoying crackle that I have only just noticed. Also I note I uploaded the song a while back! so this is a repeat. Happy New Year. Best, Chris
@clancyhayesjazz8226 Happy New Year. But not so happy in NOLA. Awful tragedy. God bless.
This is the wartime YBJB - and that's the great Benny Strickler on trumpet; Bob Helm & Ellis Horne, clarinets; Bill Barden, trombone; Russ Bennett, banjo; Burt Bales, piano; Clancy Hayes, drums. Fidgety Feet was originally released on a Good Time Jazz 78 #22, and subsequently reissued on 45 and then CD. This was broadcast by KYA in August, 1942.
I heard Clancy many times at Earthquake McGoons. Jack Buck was my friend. A great trombonist and pianist. He was warm hearted.
great jazz got this record
Just wonderful music.
NICE, TY SO MUCH
totally loved this Channel. can you upload "wild man Blues"? ty in Advance
Glad you enjoyed the channel, best CHJ
Madre mía querida😮😮😮QUE CLASE DE TEMA POR DIOS 👏👏👏👏. Voy a montarle un sampler con rap y ver como suena. QUE VIVA LA MÚSICA 🎧 EN MI CORAZÓN ❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
As always, love the music, cover art and photos. McGoon's (Clay St.) is forever burned into my memory. Thank you, your work is appreciated.
I'm so glad people still remember that place. A big part of my childhood.
Thanks for your comment, I am glad you enjoyed the music and video. What wonderful times they were.
I knew all these people but the commerciqal stopes everything so this is the second time that I have tried to say someething but I guess they only want what they want. Anyway good luck - if this gets through
So anyway, even though it says 1 day ago. it was months. Anyway I met Pat Yankee at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee and told her that I was at Earthquake Magoons when someone asked Turk Murphy what happened to her. And he said that she married a Spanish Count and moved to Spain. She did marry, but not a count (Turk liked to embellish) and I met him. Anyway, since this is the Clancy Hayes channel I did see him many times, mostly with Turk and he would do the intermission and bring in the players, one by one, for the second half, and was always a great hit. Maybe this will get through.
Can't do better than Turk Murphy
My thanks to @asbg1for the personnel details; it is good to know the musicians on this excellent album, I will upload another track in the near future. Also how good to hear from have from Max Wurr; your suspicion is confirmed. Regards to you both, CHJ.
Personnel: [Steve Lane (cnt) Mike Messenger, Mike Pointon (tb) John Wurr (cl,sop,as) Brian Austin (p) Jim Cox (bj) John Arthey (tu,b) Chris Marchant (d)] Recorded Sept. 26, 1968
Also issued as a 45 here in the UK in 1955 Gold Parlophone MSP 6127
Okay, I posted in volume 2 before reading this, volume 1. The technology available at the time, (1942) would have probably been wire recorders or acetate discs probably recorded at 78rpms. Tape did not exist in the “Free World” as that was perfected in Nazi Germany, and not available until about 1947 or so, largely through the efforts of Bing Crosby who wanted a better way with higher fidelity to prerecord his radio show. I am a student of the history of recording and recorded sound. I believe the fellow who brought the German machinery to the US was named Mullins.
Clancy Hayes brought me here! I do wish someone could clean up this sound! Was this done on a wire recorder or acetate 78 rpm?
I believe "Kid Cag" is Ernie Cagnolatti.
The correct title is "Silver Bell"
I was riveted by the photos and cover art. The music is always pure joy. Thank you!
Thanks for the comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the images and the music. Best.
Nice
My father John Wurr on clarinet seemingly. Would be good to know full personnel.
Steve Lane (cornet), John Wurr (clarinet), two trombone players used on this album Mike Messenger and Mike Sherbourne, Jim Cox (banjo), Brian Austin (piano), John Arthy (bass) and Chris Marchant (drums).
Pictures of Scobey's Fleet of Caddys. Nice
Jelly Roll Morton special , but SO good here !
Retro Dixieland jazz
Great jazz from the revivalist period in the late 1940's
These are the records I have from the late 1940's
I love Clancey Hayes so much.
Nice to see Lammi and Monty again! I never knew Lammi was a strummer too!
Glad you enjoyed it. Dick Lammi is credited as a banjoist in K.O. Eckland's incredible Jazz West books.
Master George Lewis 🎉🎉🎉🎉 thank you 🙏
Loving this everyday, thank you.
Brilliant music
Glad you enjoyed it.
awesome!
1948 I was ten years old. Ten years later, in 1958, okay, maybe a couple of years later I saw Clancy Hayes with the Turk Murphy Jazzz Band. He also did the intermission and the band came back and added to his solo. Got the record
That's my Uncle Tony Gibbons playing the Clarinet, what a great guy he was, he died too young. He was the youngest of four kids, my father John Gibbons, was number two, he just passed away June 2023 at the age of 99.5 years, he was the last of the Gibbons children, great people and great times for sure!....❤

Terrible banjo-sound!
One of Ken's loveliest recordings.
Lovely tune
Interestingly... I used to date the lady that owned Turk's washboard! Dunno if she has it now, or where she is...
The ballroom was massive and the bands were big The Troc

Thanks for your comments. The photos are from the later TMJB releases on Stomp Off (1) and Merrymakers (3) as follows. MMRC 114 has the band photo with Ray Skjelbred and Lyn Zimmer plus another with Turk and Pat Yankee at microphone; MMRC 115 has a band photo with Bill Carroll on trombone; MMRC 117 has the colour photo of band. Stomp off LP SOS 1161 has a band photo from 1980 with John Gill at the mike and the close up photo of Turk on trombone; the LP also has a repeat of the 1984 photo from MMRC 114. Hope this helps. Best, CHJ.
Is there a better version of this song ? The band get it right, ensemble and solos, from beginning to end. Love the piano solo.
Thanks for the information and the memories. A great first buy. Yes, when a band gets the perfect tempo and the tune really swings it is very special. Thanks again for your comments.
The first jazz record I purchased - I was 11. The record shop was in Wellington Street, Luton.
Steve Lane recorded for the Major Minor label three times I recall - Riverboat Shuffle (The Dixie Stompers), Sweet Lorraine (The Rhythm Kings) and Just Gone (Steve Lane's Southern Stompers).
always one of my favorites! And you have a picture of Jim Goggin in there, awesome. We had multiple copies of his wonderful book about Turk and the band.
Glad you enjoyed it. The musicians in the Turk Murphy bands were always exceptionally talented. It is a pity that Pete Clute didn't make a solo album; such a wonderful player. Best. CHJ
