  • The jazz band that is rightly credited with launching a worldwide interest in traditional jazz in 1940 plays at the end of its war interrupted ten year history.
It is hard to believe that such joyous music is being played by an outfit that would disband only months later on New Years day 1951. Times and tastes had changed and Lu Watters' health issues would see a very early retirement from jazz; although the YBJB alumni would lead traditional jazz throughout the next decade. The video includes images of the later bands that continued to play this fine music including the Down Home Jazz Band and the Yerba Buena Stompers- who played well into the new century.
From the SFTJF collection at Stanford University, the band in this live recording from Hambone Kelly's at El Cerrito is:
Lu Watters, Leader, tpt; Don Noakes, tbn; Bob Helm, clt; Wally Rose, p; Dick Lammi, tuba; Bill Dart, d. Clancy Hayes takes the vocal and plays banjo.
Thanks go to all the musicians who started, continued and still continue to play traditional jazz music.
    Enjoy.
    Peace to all
