Hi, I'm Richard Hyatt and I'm beekeeper since 2019 when I bought my first 2 bee colonies. Like many beekeepers, I've had successful years and some that have not been so successful. Beekeeping is journey with a long learning curve. This channel has been created to connect with other beekeepers and hopefully enhance their and our beekeeping and learning journeys together.
I might note here, while I started this channel in 2014. I began to start beekeeping in 2019. And in September 2, 2023 I changed the theme in earnest to be about honeybees.

Beekeeper's Smoker
Honeybees think the beehive is on fire when the beekeeper adds smoke into the beehive. As a means of protection they gorge themselves with honey. This makes them much more docile to work with. They become more concerned with the perceived house fire and less concerned with the beekeeper.
A smoker is not that hard to keep lit but, in this video there are a few things that make it easier.
This video shows just one way to do it. There are many more, just ask any beekeeper for starting your smoker tips. Most are are willing to help you get yours started.

I have no desire to be a beekeeper, but I enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks, it's an interesting hobby or business. Lots go surprises.
Congratulations!🎉 ive been watching your bee shorts for a few months, i may never own any myself, but youre the reason i ever had the thought in the first place! Keep up the hardwork, youre the protector of the little ones! 🎊
Thanks I'm glad you are enjoying them.
Subscribed! What is the best way to start beekeeping? And also convincing my wife that I want to keep bees? Thanks in advance!
I would suggest a couple things. Join the local beekeeping club. Read beekeeping books. Beekeeping for Dummies is very helpful and covers the basics. Take a beekeeping class. Now as far as convincing your wife goes...??? Hey, thanks for the comment.
@@richardhyatt-beekeepingthank you!
aww underated! this is so nice
Thank you, Zoey.
It’s beautiful a life, that’s for sure.😊
Thank you,
Good brother ❤
Thanks ✌
awesome
It is fun, sometimes. Work other times.
Room to grow! 😂 yahoo!
Room to add honey and sugar syrup actually while the bees get ready for winter. Brood production should slow down soon., But, yes the existing brood will emerge shortly so, there will be more bees to the colony. Thanks.
Love purple asters! The petals are so delicate they feel like feathers
My wife says these are New England Asters. The bees love them as well as other pollinators.
You sound like a gentle soul who enjoys what is simply beautiful
Thank you, I've wondered what I sound like to others. I do enjoy the pleasantries of nature.
Beautiful as are the bee's.
I think so too!
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Reminds me of my childhood. Suculent floor covering were planted on the ditch sides. In the spring, purple flowers blooms.
My parents managed a nursery for a little while and when they retired my dad always had flowers for church any day of the year. Snow on the ground, he would find something pretty. This garden was made by my wife. I do the honeybees.
I’m waiting on the flow!!!!
Fireburn weed? If so it's a native plant
Nice I got bees to
She was reminding you to wear a suite or at the very least, a veil!
Fascinating. I'd love to learn about beekeeping
Follow along my journey. Join a beekeeping club. Read books. All good ways to learn before doing.
I have noticed the same thing. My elderberry bush started turning in early August. We had plenty of rain. I’m in Southwest PA
Yes, it's coming on fast.
We have the purple and white ones around here.
Pretty, I'll bet.
I had no robbing yesterday! Drawn comb is gold!
Robbing hasn't been a real issue here yet, either. But, it could be as the dearth comes on.
If they're considered livestock, can you get all the subsidies all these poor millionaire farmers get that live around me?
You mean Monsanto? No, I don't think I'll get any subsidies. But, I may get a farm tax deduction for farm expenses once I sell 10,000 worth of farm products. (bees, honey, beeswax, candles, etc.) That said I've invested far more than that and haven't recovered a tenth of it. Probably never will.
@@richardhyatt-beekeeping nah, not Monsanto, I'll have to look it up on how they get money like that. But as far as getting paid, you're keeping the cycle alive.
Glad it helped!
What can you do if African species try to invade?
So far they have not reached my area. It's pretty cool here in the Blue Ridge so, I'm not sure they would survive.
Thanks for showing us! Really interesting
@@briantrobles9802 You’re welcome. Posting an update in a few minutes.
Why do you freeze the frames with wax? I’m new to beekeeping and have never seen this. Is it due to your location? I live in Wyoming and we get plenty of freezing.
If there is a deadout the wax moths and beetles move in and destroy the comb. So, we freeze it here while the low tempertures are about 50f for now. Freezing weather starts in late October or early November. Wyoming is a tad farther north than we are. About 500 - 700 miles farther north.
@@richardhyatt-beekeeping Thank you
Equinox is in the spring and fall, when the sun is directly overhead at the equator. Solstice is in the summer and winter, when sun is directly overhead at the northern or southern tropic.
Yes, I know that. At least I should. I was born on the summer solstice. Just got mixed up. 🙂Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for loving on the bees!
Always!
I would give them another box just for the room.
You know, I've been thinking I should do that. But, I've thought just remove a few frames of bees and put them in weaker colonies. Mostly been too busy to do either. Guess I'm going to sell a lot of bees next year. Getting too old for this. Thanks Rodney.
@@rodneymiddleton9624 Did add a deep box this morning. Drawn comb. Posting a video short.
I had the same thing happen I was told they do that when it’s too hot for them but I did add a box they were a bit crowded!
I'm thinking I'll do that tomorrow. I have plenty. Raining right now so, maybe it will be tomorrow, too. Always something! Thanks.
Very nice yard and homes for the bees🎉🎉🎉🎉🐝🐝🐝
Thanks, I built the house 🏠 myself. My wife made the gardens. Flowers 🌸
There was so much information in this video but the only part of what you were talking about that we could see was the bees. Idk anything about beekeeping so I was completely lost about what you're preparing to do.
Yes! Exactly! I realized that when I watched it as I was about to upload it. I had a choice, post it as is or reshoot it and post it tomorrow. So, I posted it and will likely replace it tomorrow. I could make excuses. But, I'm pretty sure no one wants to hear my excuses. I do plan on making a long from video doing Oxalic Acid Treatment soon. THANK YOU for your comment.
Do you own the bees!?
Yes, I own about 20 beehives. If you look at my UA-cam Channel you will see 439 videos of my bees.
@@richardhyatt-beekeeping oh wow I will make sure to check
Do they stay inside & get later starts on working when mornings start getting chilly? They don't do well with cold temperatures right?
Most of the time I wait until it's over 50f and after 10 am. Usually, they will be out and about by then Under 50f they stay clustered in the hive. Today, I started at 9 am because I wanted all the bees to be in the hive during Oxalic Acid treatment to kill Varroa Mites, But, I was not taking the hive apart to do that.
Drought. Did you have adequate rain this summer? We did not.
No. May get a little in the next few days.
@@richardhyatt-beekeeping That's why the leaves are turning yellow. The plants are conserving water by letting some leaves go. It's a sign of drought stress. We have that also here in the midatlantic USA.
I love autumn! 🥰
Me too. Love all the seasons, actually. Change is good.
The clean up crew!
Bees hard at work everyday!!❤
Yes, they are.
I’m afraid of bees and I think it takes tremendous courage for beekeepers to keep them!
@@dianawatton7570 Yes, it’s a bit intimidating but, unless you’re allergic it not too hard to wear protection and avoid most stings. And, you can get used to a sting now and then.
I love 🐝
Sounds so fun!
I love your beautiful set up.
@@landomilknhoney My wife’s the gardener, thanks.
I have a robbing station set up with open bottoms for easy access! Thanks Richard!
Done it both ways. I leave a bottom board on now to catch any cappings they pull off, most of the time. This time the bees didn't go for it until I left the parts apart. Then I put them together and they are still cleaning it out today.
@@richardhyatt-beekeeping I have a big plastic tote from Walmart and a couple short 2x4's in the bottom to set the box on and I don't loose the wax from them robbing it.
Scrape the trays and make some bees wax. Then freeze the empty trays before you put them back in a hive.
Thanks, may do that.
I put them in the freezer for a week and then feed back the honey to the bees. That’s minor damage. Glad you caught it quickly. I’ve seen other UA-camrs burn their equipment over that. I won’t. It’s too expensive to just burn over wax moths. Thanks Richard!
Thank you. They are almost cleaned out now. I’ve got quite a bit of drawn comb for next year, may melt some wax to sell or make some candles.
@@richardhyatt-beekeeping Sounds like a plan!
Oh ya we 🤬HATE Waxmoths. I think what it is, is if the honey has turned they wont clean it up but but if it's not to bad they will use it. It happens some times, it's part of beekeeping this time of year. I am glad you are feeling better, Blessed Days...
Thanks. In beekeeping if someone goes wrong, you can fix it or use II for something else.
Make wax
Yes, that is a good option. But, I think I'll save the frames of drawn comb to make nuc splits in the spring. Should build up and be ready to sell real quick. Pretty sure some of it will be salvage for wax products, too.🤔
Lovely🕉💚
They are thirsty!!
Just like you and I. Hot days require more water.
