Curtain Call with David Spatz - Guest: Trisha Yearwood
Before becoming a Food Network star, all the TV specials, Emmys, Grammys her massive 1996 hit "How do I live", even before becoming Mrs. Garth Brooks, we had an opportunity to sit down with Trisha before her first ever performance in Atlantic City, just a few years into her career. It was apparent early on she had the talent, the brains and the respect she needed to become one of the greats.

How do you describe Wayne Newton? To his devoted fans, he is an insanely talented musician who embodies classic showmanship. For others, he is a living breathing cartoon character drawn from a bygone era, something Damon Runyon would conjure up if he had been from Vegas. The truth is probably both to some degree but what is undeniable is that he is showbiz history. Who's alive today that can sa...

Merv Griffin's Coconut Ballroom shows were always a summer highlight during his tenure in Atlantic City. He always found a way to give this old fashion show from a bygone era a twist and sparkle that made it seem fresh, spontenous and fun. In 1994, Merv defied expectations again by coaxing Cybil Shepard to spend a July weekend at Resorts to sing in front of his loyal audience. We caught up with...

Johnny Rivers is essentially Rock and Roll's secret agent man. He's somehow flown under the radar for over 50 years with nine top 10's and 17 top 40 hits. He set the standard for live rock albums with his "Johnny Rivers Live at the Whiskey A Go Go" and made that club the happening spot in LA. He produced the 5th Dimension and gave Jimmy Webb his big break. We caught up with Rivers in 2011 at a ...

From 2000 to 2003, Ron White rode a wave of success with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour that is rarely seen in stand up comedy. Seemingly overnight, he was transformed from a favorite club comic who told stories that got funnier with every scotch he drank into a key piece of a multi-million dollar comedy brand. We caught up with Ron in 2012 at Harrah's Atlantic City. The Blue Collar Tours were the...

Every now and then we got a chance to meet a celebrity or artist that was not known in the U.S. but was very popular overseas. Human Nature was essentially Australia's "Backstreet Boys" and were coming off an incredibly successful Motown tribute album. Smokey Robinson caught their act and so impressed, he helped bring them to America in 2008. One of their first stops in the U.S. was in Atlantic...

Jerry Blavat was a 13 year old kid who won dance contests on the original American Bandstand back in the 50's. He eventually parlayed that teenage gig into a legendary 60 year career in music and broadcasting that is still going on today in the Philadelphia & Jersey Shore region. We caught up with "The Geator" in 2011 at his book release party and went down memory lane with the "Boss with the H...

We caught up with Jamie Farr in 2008 and found out that his story goes far beyond his Corporal Klinger days and yet is oddly similar to his famous MASH character. 1968 is notoriously one of the "bad" years in American history... but not for Gary Puckett. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap exploded on the pop charts that year with three Top 20 albums and four Top 10 hits, was nominated for a Grammy and played the White House. Within 2 years, Puckett's run with The Union Gap was over but those songs and that big voice never left the airways. Puckett made a comeb...

Here is a "lost show" from our archives. So lost, it never ever aired. This 1995 interview with Hawaiian icon Don Ho was done right before a special "players" show at the Trump Taj Mahal, his first performance on the East coast since the 70s. It's kind of a mystery on why this show sat on the shelf for 35 years but we do remember it being a weird interview and the vibe backstage was really odd....

I was not much more than a toddler and I had been given the 45 of "Rockin' P....woogie flu". Just took me to another level of free form funk. Like doing drugs, almost, to find out you could have this much fun making music. Then it happened. I saw my personal messiah, on TV, In a Tux. Playing Rock and Roll. In a Tux! There are no Tuxedos in Rock and Roll! Even as a kid I knew that much. Tuxedos were for Dean and Frank and Sammy! I've gotten over it, but it took a great deal of time. JR was just on the cusp of the rebellion. Hadn't gotten the call on wardrobe yet. But he could make the music.

When I first watched Stargate SG1 I was drawn to it, not because I was a SciFi fan, but because I thought of it as a comedy. There were so many hilarious bits and hidden gags that I fell in love with it. It was only years later that I learned of the connection of Dom DeLuise and Stargate. He has always be a great comedian and a sweet person. I am so happy to see that his life is carried on in his children.

I grew up in Italian neighborhood near the Poconos. There was an Italian town right next to us founded by people from an Italian town northeast of Naples. These would emigrate to the American town. In 1963 a group came over. My sister embraced the older Italian people. Among those that came over in 1963 was an older couple with the son. Later I became good friends with the son. When Johnny Rivers came on the scene, I noticed s striking resemblance between him and Johnny Rivers.

I’ve always liked Frank Jr. He was a regular guy and there was no bull shit about him. He was so honest and really missed his dad when he past. I never had the opportunity to see Frank Jr. perform. I’ve seen his father many times and the last time I saw his father, Frank Jr. was conducting the orchestra. It’s a shame this kind of music isn’t played at all. It’s far superior than what passes for music today.

Similarly for myself. I happened to be in Vegas in the late 80's or so and my son had left to gamble so i walked around walked into a show not knowing who he was. He was a total riot, but at the end of his show I still hadn't learned his name, but never heard about him after that in spite of occasionally recollecting his show...until low and behold I came across his obit some 25 years later. Saddened me. IMM he ranks with the all-time greats for his humor and expertise of his delivery.
