The Extraordinary Salish Sea
The Salish Sea has it all: mountains and volcanoes, cactus and rainforests, over 400 islands, waters sheltered from ocean storms, an extravagant biodiversity from orcas to eelgrass, a rich history of Coast Salish peoples, and today - nine million people. It's EXTRAORDINARY!! So, let's stand up for it!
Action List: How You Can Help the Salish Sea
1. Learn About Your Local Area: Research the history of your town or city, focusing on the indigenous land it was built on. Suggested resource: nativelands.ca
2. Leave No Trace: Spend time outdoors and practice the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT.org)
3. Reduce Car Use: when available, opt for public transit, ride-sharing, biking, or walking for errands.
4. Participate in Community Events: Volunteer for beach cleanups, tree planting, and other conservation activities. Join community scientific research projects that monitor the health of the Salish Sea, such as water quality testing and wildlife or habitat surveys.
5. Share Your Concerns for the Salish Sea: let elected officials know that the Salish Sea is important to you. Share information about policies that are needed to protect the Salish Sea. Vote.
6. Save Energy: purchase only energy-efficient appliances, explore solar panels, heat pumps for house or condo. Encourage landlords and homeowners associations to do same.
7. Promote Sustainability in Business: Showcase your sustainable practices to customers and prioritize buying local to reduce shipping needs while supporting your community.
8. Conserve Water: Implement water-saving practices at home, such as fixing leaks, using low-flow fixtures, and being mindful of water usage in daily activities.
9. Local Food: Purchase seafood and produce from local, sustainable sources as much as possible.
10. Learn: Attend workshops, lectures, and community meetings focused on the Salish Sea. Share this knowledge with friends and family to raise awareness.
11. Create Wildlife Habitats: Build birdhouses, bat boxes, or insect hotels to provide safe habitats for local wildlife, contributing to biodiversity.
12. Reuse, Repurpose, Repair, Recycle: Reuse items as much as possible and participate in local recycling programs.
13. Responsible Pet Ownership: Keep pets, especially cats, indoors or supervise them outdoors to prevent them from harming local wildlife. Properly dispose of pet waste.
14. Nix the Helium Balloons: balloons often end up in our marine waters and can even be ingested by marine animals. Please find friendlier alternatives for your celebrations.
15. Share your love of the Salish Sea with friends and family! Have fun together.

HERRING: Why Kill the Foundation of the Salish Sea?
Stunningly beautiful images, though I didn't hear the words "old growth forests," and wonder why they were largely ignored: a brief visual image, that's all. They are also a foundational part of the system that fosters all that variety of life, including the intertidal and estuarial zones.
Found this video while looking for short videos to share with my students in a homeschool co-op marine biology class that I teach. This week's lesson is all about our very own Salish Sea. I love the similarities between the Salish Sea and a windblown tree. Thank you for putting this video together. We sure do live in a beautiful part of the country and I love co-existing with such amazing creatures around us.
thank you Rachel. I am delighted that you find the movie useful for your class. That was my hope when I made the movie - that a tree might be a helpful way to tell the story of how the Salish Sea works.
pure fascination. Thank you so much
Great! Thank you!
The greatest of all fish in my eyes! Watching them in Fraser River year after year going through many obstacles to where they were born. Life givers to many species. Massive respect for them.❤
i want to be a salmon
the sole reason i went to canada as student and got my PR was to explore its vast flora and fauna. But was soon got stuck in Vancouver city life . Ppl around me didn't want to miss a days work to explore mother nature . I still cherish my solo trip from calgary to Toronto, Williams lake . Soon ppl declared to my family back home in india that i have gone mad . so went back to live in rural india and soon will be back to diacover these areas plus Andes, Rockies, Himalayas . life ia too short to discover all of our earth . May be next life is booked as well .
What a wonderful channel ... and delightful video! A wonderful adventure and is just a wonderful experience for us to witness such a beautiful wilderness!!
Thanks that was an amazing trip. Takes me back to the '70s. That was an awesome film! It looks like you guys had a great time!!
This was very enjoyable to watch. You captured the feel of the place and the time so well. I was 16 in 1974, living in coastal B.C., and I spent many happy hours hiking in the mountains around and near Vancouver. Thanks for this great explore and for sharing it with us. What beautiful memories for all of you. <3
I just wanted to say - thank you for this video. What a journey! Someday, I hope to see the Nahanni with my own eyes -- in big part thanks to you sharing your adventure!
Climate change? ....... Stopped watching!
So no little winged creatures came out at night as one guy has claimed? Said he and 3 others went there and spent the night on the water since the creatures didn’t go on water. He said they were fast white things with wings that would scurry quickly across the ground from sunset to sunrise. Is it true?
No monsters, cryptids 😢
This is an incredible video!!!
So who taught them how to do the nest thing?
I love it ! its so hard to find info and videos on salmon like this that are not related to fishing, I just want to admire and understand their habitat and ecology, not trick them and play around with them :)
The creator spirit blessed the Salish Sea, thanks for wonderful work of this video
Amazing footage! Thank you
Very good Video. By coincidence I just started reading Dangerous River last week. Thanks again

thank you for your beautiful film and very effective educational content Bob - you are a treasure just like the environment you describe:)
A friend and I canoed the Nahanni from Glacier lake to the falls in 85.We had no white water experience,I was 18yrs old, and capsized on a bend over a rock before Rabbit kettle.I thought twice about continuing on after the falls and without a spray skirt. That river spooked the hell out of me.
As a Hornby Island summer resident based in Vancouver I deeply appreciate the effort you put into making this film. It's delightful and delicate, informative, beautiful and poignant.
Another gorgeous achievement in filmmaking! Thank you for caring so much about this precious region where we live. ❤
