Reddit is a hub of community and discussion, but the writing subreddit is lackluster. Each month, we dive into some popular posts for further discussion. Today, it's all about the state of indie writing and some rules of storytelling that I see pop up every year or so.

Lmao mainstream publishing is a cancerous nightmare if you're right of Karl Marx. SP is freedom. Go look at all the drama the past 12 years and ask yourself if SP is bad outside of the fact most writers doing it suck.
Bank level security?! When military grade security is freely available? Oh no!
Be ADD, write all the good parts in a glorified outline, put it away, and tell everyone you wrote a novel once. What a great plan.
Carson, good to see this podcast - a longer form of discussion. Hope it does well.
I really appreciate this video. The more I learn from other people, the less I feel like an outlier. Other writers do things similar to things I’ve always done, branded by teachers and professors as wrong. You now have a new sub!
Glad you found it helpful! Hope to see you around the discord!
I thought this was supposed to be about writing killers. I'm disappointed.
This is great writing advice, but I might mention that it's advice, not absolute laws. Different things work for different people. Personally, I couldn't write a proto-draft. I can't write anything until I work out the full story, with beat sheets, character profiles and scene charts. In a sense, my notes become the first draft. When I start writing the initial words I'm writing an already edited version of the story. From the initial concept it may take a couple of months to a couple of years before I start actually writing, but when I do the finished draft is already fairly readable. Then I can go back and deal with things that develop while I was writing; a character that shows up to challenge the MC might need to be introduced earlier, or a critical geological feature may need to be shown in the first chapter so it's not a surprise when my hero arrives at the final battle.
Great video and great collaboration! That IS a very serious standing desk 🤔!
Great insights from two of the best on UA-cam.
That means a lot to hear - thank you 🙂
omg my two favorite writetubers or else, together!
Thank you for the kind feedback - it really means a lot 🙂
Love this video and the collab of two of my favorite channels. This video also gave me a big idea for my WIP so thanks for that!❤
That's what I'm talking about! 🤘
A video was always worth it if just one writer gets inspired - at least that's my take on this every time 🙂
Two of my favorite writing channels collaborating, I can’t wait to see more!
Such praise is incredibly heart-warming, thank you. I'm sure it wasn't the last time we'll try such a collaboration video 🙂
I watched this with intention and intentionally hit the like button
That’s what I’m talking about 🤘🤘
Intention you say? Great video! So cool to have a familiar face join the channel for a video
Glad that you liked the collaboration - it was a great idea from Carson 🙂
5:11 The love story that drives Princess Bride is not Wesley and Buttercup: it's the love the Grampa has for his grandson.
My head does that, so i get up and hammer it out. Then i can sleep. Or my characters tell me to go this way or gife m ecan idea to fix something, fortunately they wait for me to wake and then remind me.
Thank you for giving a shout out to Senlin Ascends! The Books of Babel is one of my favorite series of all time and while I was endeared to Tom from the beginning his journey and growth throughout the series has been so satisfying to read.
Someone’s gotta rep those indie reads!
Another great video mate. :)
Appreciate the kind words!
So what about the final conflict man vs author? I'm thinking Daffy duck in the short where it turns out that Bug's was not only his antagonist but also the animator, or perhaps the less slapstick takes of Dante's inferno or Paradise lost of 'man' vs god. Heck the very premise of Evongelion was that the Kiju are biblical angels, because like in the flood as it turns out god hates us. How would you go about crafting a story by say giving every aspect of an obnoxiously written Mary Sue or a Shonen protagonist to the villain?
oh, yeah, back in the 80s we all got a good laugh out of humperdinct
writing routines of the rich and famous? you're calling it that? and it's not ironic or anything? gross!ima robin leech in my pants
The book about writing romance is just what I needed right now.
Also, I like the brown dog occasionally on the background. Cute.
"Murder your darlings" has a much better ring to it IMO.
*watches this video to motivate me to finish short story challenge😭💀* Seriously tho this was very helpful 🙏
Let’s gooo!!!
It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are well done make you feel *something*.
Word of the wise: ending punctuation immediately after (no space) a text modifier will undo the modification. For example using asterisks for bold text with a period/full stop after the ending asterisk. To keep the modifier, either put the ending punctuation inside the modifiers or put a space after the last modifier separating the punctuation. Original text: It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are well done will make you feel *something*. Placing punctuation inside the asterisks: It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are done well will make you feel *something.* With a space to separate: It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are done well will make you feel *something* . Depends on preference of aesthetic, whether the look of asterisks is preferred over the look of bold text, and also where the punctuation appears.
@@Eidolon1andOnly The asterisks were a holdover from posting mostly on Discord (italics). Goodness ... really, a comment dedicated to formatting text in chat? I would recommend focusing on the *intent* of the post.
@csb78nm Ironic given that the intent of my post was intentionally overlooked so one could be snarky, with what appears to be some sort of offense taken over a criticism that was never made. I understood the intent just fine, and there wasn't much more I felt needed to be added. I wrote a reply on text formatting on a channel dedicated to the craft of writing, after observing a piece of formatting which may or may not have been intentional, so felt it was a good opportunity to share what I knew about text formating here. I've had many posted comments questioned for how out of place they appear, but my above reply was perfectly well placed given the nature of this channel and the OP containing the formatting. Not many are aware of how text formatting works here and what does and doesn't work. I offered no judgement, no criticisms, yet get met with some snarky judgemental reply questioning my reading comprehension and use of my time, with a poor excuse as to why asterisks remain visible due to some _other_ platform's coding. For future reference, on *_this_* platform, underscores are used for _italics,_ asterisks are used for *bold,* and hyphens/dashes are used for -strike through.- My advice about ending punctuation applies to all equally. It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are done well make you feel _something._ What should I think about a character who is ungrateful of the time I put in to give an informative comment, complete with examples, while never criticizing that person?
YES! I'm so happy to see Senlin Ascends get some love. The Books of Babel series is one of my favorites. The theme of going from feckless to triumphant goes right through to the end of the series.
Great video! It definitely makes me think more about what traits are strongest in each of my characters. 👍
Have you seen his No flat Stanleys video yet? ua-cam.com/video/MqgbFzm2Tvw/v-deo.html @ 12:43 is "a tip from Nicholas" that's me, it works too, really helped me get inside my main characters heads.
@@yuckal Cool! I'll have to check that out. Thank you!
How we feel about Bella or Katniss one I want to bite the other I want to shoot just saying Katniss was so freaking annoying. LOL
I didn't like Ghost Story my first readthrough. I have since loved it on all my rereads.
I usually develop the character's personality and/or hobbies/story a bit before naming them. The one character i have that i know breaks this convention is named Vex- he used to be an edgy oc with the name vortex and then I shortened it when i changed his character. I like my names to have meanings related to their character, like a kind character being named grace, but usually a bit less heavy handed than that example. Also yes the translation thing!!
I really liked On Writing, more as a book than writing advice, but I'll definitely have to check out Bird by Bird. On a side note, I've lived in SoCal my whole life and bundle up when it dips to 60 degrees, I think if I even step foot into -5 weather I would immediately die.
I would add K.M. Weiland's series of books on various aspects of writing (many of which also have accompanying workbooks)
John Yorke's Into the Woods: a Five Act Journey Into Story and Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics are two books in my writing library I couldn't do without
I can't tell what the difference is between a rough draft and this protodraft concept. Are these words describing the same concept?
I was not expecting to see our demon prince pal Be’lakor mentioned in this video
Summation on King's advice: xxIT Happens.; or it doesn't.
Garland, Swain, McKee, Field, Truby: Top notch books. Weiland and Gale (Betwixt) are head and shoulders above anyone when using archetypes to drive plot and character arcs.
Chuck Wendig's Damn Fine Story is a damn fine book on writing. As are his others, Gentle Writing Advice and Kick Ass Writer, but Damn Fine Story is my favorite.
I bought Romancing The Beat when my first book demanded to be a trilogy, and the second book was going to be a double romance. Not just a modern love story, but a classic Ivanhoe style romance with swashbuckling adventure and political intrigue. The third book will be a hearty adventure where the hero takes her army to war. I need a book on that, too. I also have "Writing Magic" by Gail Carsoon Levine. It's mostly a book for kids just starting, but with some useful ideas that are worth looking at. A tidy 167 pages, including the index at the back.
You Can Write A Novel - the 1st edition - by James V. Smith jr This has been an invaluable resource for me with my writing. He wrote a second edition which I got, but was not impressed with. His 1st edition I highly recommend you check out.
1:45 I would argue Stephen King's On Writing is popular neither because of A) His name or B) it being a helpful writing book, but rather option C) because it's a GOOD BOOK, meaning it's fun to read. And this is exactly my criticism of it and why I don't think it's a good book on writing: Stephen King has been writing for SO LONG--and he's a "gardener" or "pantser," so genius just kind of flows out of him (and he works really hard). But he can't put it in words imo and is actually pretty negative about the whole craft, like, "You either got it or you don't." Get out of here with that crap. Yes there is talent, like in anything, but a newbie can learn to do anything better IF they have a good coach or manual. I recommend this book but not to be taken as a guide.
Good insight! I’m with you
8:33 - 8:42 / What about representation? Like race and skin color, disabilities, facial differences, and body types? Like, I'm not against leaving people to interpret certain details, but if you're writing minority characters, especially if they're the main characters, then you have to own that you're writing minority characters, even when them being a minority doesn't play a significant role in the story. And even then, if you write those descriptions, you should do that for your white, abled bodied, etc characters too because otherwise you'd end up othering your minority characters and implying that white/abled bodied/etc people are the default, so they don't need a description.
Jeff Vandermeer's Wonderbook was good.
I have this one and it’s great for flipping through and not worrying about a dense wall of text!
I'm not sure if I suggested this one but Consider This by Chuck Palahniuk is one of my favorite books on writing. I also wanna add Secrets of Story by Matt Bird, and The Idea by Erik/Eric Bork.
Great recommendations!
I have read Stephen King’s On Writing, and I will definitely try to pick up some of these other ones
You won’t regret it!!
This is the most contradicting video on names I've seen. Basically saying that bad names should be avoided but then giving examples of bad names as good names too 😂
"Never start two names with the same letter." Unless you're writing for Inu Yasha, then every major character name starts with "K". Kagome, Kaede, Kikyo, Kagura, Koga, Kohaku, Kanna, Kuzu... and like a dozen more.
i just found out i accidentally called one of my characters (someone who is partially DRYAD) a form of the greek word for bloom! perfection. (cloe)
to be fair the two women that are close to him are in love with him, then men like butters and Michael have there own stuff, and his brother not human, so yea it does make sence.
Where is the spreadsheeeet? :(
