YES! I'm so happy to see Senlin Ascends get some love. The Books of Babel series is one of my favorites. The theme of going from feckless to triumphant goes right through to the end of the series.
Word of the wise: ending punctuation immediately after (no space) a text modifier will undo the modification. For example using asterisks for bold text with a period/full stop after the ending asterisk. To keep the modifier, either put the ending punctuation inside the modifiers or put a space after the last modifier separating the punctuation. Original text: It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are well done will make you feel *something*. Placing punctuation inside the asterisks: It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are done well will make you feel *something.* With a space to separate: It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are done well will make you feel *something* . Depends on preference of aesthetic, whether the look of asterisks is preferred over the look of bold text, and also where the punctuation appears.
@@Eidolon1andOnly The asterisks were a holdover from posting mostly on Discord (italics). Goodness ... really, a comment dedicated to formatting text in chat? I would recommend focusing on the *intent* of the post.
@csb78nm Ironic given that the intent of my post was intentionally overlooked so one could be snarky, with what appears to be some sort of offense taken over a criticism that was never made. I understood the intent just fine, and there wasn't much more I felt needed to be added. I wrote a reply on text formatting on a channel dedicated to the craft of writing, after observing a piece of formatting which may or may not have been intentional, so felt it was a good opportunity to share what I knew about text formating here. I've had many posted comments questioned for how out of place they appear, but my above reply was perfectly well placed given the nature of this channel and the OP containing the formatting. Not many are aware of how text formatting works here and what does and doesn't work. I offered no judgement, no criticisms, yet get met with some snarky judgemental reply questioning my reading comprehension and use of my time, with a poor excuse as to why asterisks remain visible due to some _other_ platform's coding. For future reference, on *_this_* platform, underscores are used for _italics,_ asterisks are used for *bold,* and hyphens/dashes are used for -strike through.- My advice about ending punctuation applies to all equally. It boils down to emotional connection -- love them or hate them, characters that are done well make you feel _something._ What should I think about a character who is ungrateful of the time I put in to give an informative comment, complete with examples, while never criticizing that person?
Thank you for giving a shout out to Senlin Ascends! The Books of Babel is one of my favorite series of all time and while I was endeared to Tom from the beginning his journey and growth throughout the series has been so satisfying to read.
Have you seen his No flat Stanleys video yet? ua-cam.com/video/MqgbFzm2Tvw/v-deo.html @ 12:43 is "a tip from Nicholas" that's me, it works too, really helped me get inside my main characters heads.
So what about the final conflict man vs author? I'm thinking Daffy duck in the short where it turns out that Bug's was not only his antagonist but also the animator, or perhaps the less slapstick takes of Dante's inferno or Paradise lost of 'man' vs god. Heck the very premise of Evongelion was that the Kiju are biblical angels, because like in the flood as it turns out god hates us. How would you go about crafting a story by say giving every aspect of an obnoxiously written Mary Sue or a Shonen protagonist to the villain?

5:11 The love story that drives Princess Bride is not Wesley and Buttercup: it's the love the Grampa has for his grandson.

Someone’s gotta rep those indie reads!
Great video! It definitely makes me think more about what traits are strongest in each of my characters. 👍
