      We are speaking at an advanced learner’s speed, so it will certainly be difficult to understand for high intermediate listeners and below. However, you can always turn on the subtitles (Josh edits them to ensure they are accurate) and slow the video’s speed. We don’t slow down much so listeners can practice adjusting their ears to native speaking. Keep practicing! 💪

    • @waiguofriendsenglish
      @waiguofriendsenglish 25 днів тому

      Yes, we use lots of synonyms, but they don’t always have the exact same meaning. Most of the time, a particular synonym is stronger in meaning or feeling than the more general word (or it’s more specific to the context). That’s okay! Here is your sentence: “Thanks a lot! I know the importance of using synonyms because natives use various synonyms with the same meaning.”

    Very good video, I think all of us who are starting out need to listen to this, many times the applications or places that teach English sell us the false idea that we can get a very good level in one or two years. I am about to finish a course that took me two years and I don't feel that I am at the level I would like but hearing that it can take up to 10 years reassures me a little and I have already set a more realistic goal that is achievable in a self-taught way.

    • @waiguofriendsenglish
      @waiguofriendsenglish 25 днів тому

      Yes! We found the same disheartenment in the past, so after years of research, we found that it all comes down to time and consistency. You can make some things faster by avoiding what you don’t have to know, focusing on your weaknesses, and working with a tutor, but having a measurable, realistic goal is crucial to making those things effective!

    Great stuff, guys! Indeed, the gerund can be a bit tricky. In Romanian, for instance, the gerund translates as an English present participle and is called a "mood" rather than a non-finite form, with no nominal features. Perhaps you could insist a bit on the various prepositions that can be used with gerunds (e.g. it's no use doing sth vs. there's no point in doing sth). Well done again!

    • @waiguofriendsenglish
      @waiguofriendsenglish Місяць тому

      Yes, present participles work as gerund nouns, part of progressive verbs, and adjectives in English-they are tough! Adding prepositions to them unlocks other common patterns for sure. We have at least 10 other patterns to film on gerunds alone 😅 Thanks for sharing!!

    How are advanced non native speakers from another culture more useful than those from your own culture? ._.

    • @waiguofriendsenglish
      @waiguofriendsenglish 2 місяці тому

      Good question! It’s more about the mistakes they make. When you work with advanced non-native speakers from your own culture, they MAY NOT pick up on mistakes in word choice, pronunciation, or grammar that you both share coming from the same language. We have seen this a lot. However, an advanced non-native speaker who has worked hard to identify those mistakes and corrects them for English learners from their own language can be a big help. It really depends on whether they are aware of those issues enough to hear it and correct it in their speaking partner’s patterns.
