Paris Olympic Build: Olympic Marathon (Episode 16)
We made it to race day! The Paris Olympic Marathon was everything I thought it would be and more. The crowds were deafening and thrilling. Somehow, amid all of the excitement, I managed to hear my mom, my sisters, my dad, my coach, and my wife, among other friends and family. Thank you for all of the support and the love out there! The hills were steep, but I kept my head down and took it a step at a time.
Those last hundred meters on the blue carpet were a dream. I felt so much gratitude.
I finished in 9th place with a time of 2:08:44. I'm happy with what I accomplished, even as I'm rethinking every mile I ran and every move I covered.
These past days and weeks have been filled with time with family and friends. I'm so grateful for the community that surrounds me.
Thank you to all of those who have followed this journey. It has been an amazing ride.
My next build has started! I'm training for the New York City marathon on November 3rd.

Paris Olympic Build: Sankt Moritz (Episode 15)
Переглядів 29 тис.21 годину тому
Training in St. Moritz, Switzerland lived up to the hype and was absolutely incredible. This week was all about recovering from the high of the start of the Olympics in Paris. We dropped our total weekly mileage down to 75 miles, and ran our last two workouts. “Tapering”, when we cut back mileage and workouts, is tough. My body feels like it goes into withdrawals and the mind starts to get anxi...
Paris Olympic Build: Bonjour (Episode 14)

I crushed my last predicted marathon pace of the build and set a new course record up Hobble Creek. Made it to Paris, checked into the Village, had fun at the opening ceremony, and traveled to St. Moritz for one last stint of altitude training. What an eventful week! In October 2023, I ran 2:08:00 at the Chicago marathon. Then, at the US Olympic Trials marathon in February 2024, I placed second...

Week 13 was my last 120 mile week of the build and arguably one of the best weeks of training of my life. You could say all the previous 12 weeks were to build to this moment where I could really push my training to new limits. Big marathon workouts, last long run, lifting, sauna sessions. Eat, run, sleep, repeat. Everything is starting to click. In October 2023, I ran 2:08:00 at the Chicago ma...

Week 12 had my biggest marathon simulation workout of the build-a 12 mile predicted marathon pace workout. It ended up being one of my best marathon simulation workouts I've ever done. 4:47 pace per mile. The week ended with our last 25 mile long run of the build to cap off 120 miles for the week. Almost time to taper. Grateful to train in a beautiful place. Grateful for my village. Grateful fo...

Welcome to week 11 of my 16 week build to the 2024 Paris Olympic Marathon. More miles. More big workouts. Nothing very pretty, just a lot of hard work. Happy to be healthy as I dial in these last few weeks of training. This episode shows a little more insight into all the decision making and the support crew that it takes to compete at the highest level. In October 2023, I ran 2:08:00 at the Ch...

Boston 10k and Team U.S.A processing in week 10 of my 16-week build to the 2024 Paris Olympic marathon. I spent the first part of the week in Boston for a 10k road race. I got absolutely drenched in the downpour on the start line, but what a great event! Flew straight from Eugene to Boston and made it to Hayward Field just in time for the men's 1500m. That was electric. Team U.S.A. processing w...

Gearing up for the Boston 10k this weekend! My workouts this week were shorter than usual for a marathon build. Deceptively difficult. Finding that turnover I need. We've reached a new parenting milestone: my 5 year old can now keep up with me on her bike. So fun to have the girls at the track to cheer me on. Ended the week in rainy Boston! I've been here a lot of times, but this will be my fir...

Halfway to the start line of the 2024 Paris Olympic Marathon! 8 weeks in, 8 weeks to go. I ran my third fatigued mile repeat session of the build, and it was my fastest session yet. I'm feeling grateful for my PT, Scott McKeel, who helped me work through some lower back and glute issues. In this episode you get a little peek into my siblings and their families on a camping trip. This was my first 120 mile week of the 16-week build to the Paris Olympic marathon. Seven weeks into the build, the legs were heavy, but the workouts were just what I needed. I struggled on my first workout of the week-an 8-mile uphill tempo-which was a good wake up call. I have work to do to be ready for the hills on the Paris Olympic course. I was able to bounce back and have one of my best 1...

Week 6 of my 16 week build started with race day at the Bolder Boulder 10k on Memorial Day. The roar of the crowd in that stadium finish is surreal! I’m hungry for more and I’m committed to these next ten weeks leading ...

What an amazing journey you’ve completed and started all at once. Congratulations on a special achievement and it’s a true blessing you got to share it with your family and closest people in your life. Aside from being an exemplary elite athlete, you’re an even better role model for what a great father, husband, friend, and training partner should be. Many blessings to you, your family, and your team, and look forward to seeing what the future holds for you.

All the hard training you’ve graciously shared with running fans paid off. To finish sub 2.10 in that heat on that course is an amazing achievement. Greedily, I wish you and Conner got on the podium, but who knew that this would be one of the fastest marathons in the Olympics! I hope you had a great Olympic experience. You certainly made it special for us.

This was such an amazing series to follow, grateful that you let us all see behind the scenes into what it takes to be an elite marathon runner. I was in the grandstand at the finish line and was delighted to see you and Conor do so well. (And Emile of course as I was supporting the Brits!) I ran the mass participation race that night and I don't know how you all managed those hills, I'm in awe. Such a special and memorable experience to be part of Paris 2024. Wishing you a great build and race in LA2028!

This whole episode I kept thinking, "this is what it is like when your dreams come true". All the focused toil to attempt to be among the best in the world, having a good day when it matters and most importantly having people around you who love you. None of that other stuff matters without the love.

What a race and what a journey it has been, thank you so much for sharing it with us, in my opinion this is what UA-cam is made for, showing some of the most brilliant aspects of our humanity. I was looking for this specific moment in the race were you caught Conner Mantz and you "high-fived" discreetly, even though you are competitors, maybe it was just a dream. I hope that you'll have a great NY marathon! And thank you again for the good time!

Quote from Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller: "The original word 'sanctify' meant to set yourself apart like an Olympic runner. We know what it means to train for the Olympics. it means that absolutely everything in life is subordinate to one goal. It means that every minute of the day, every activity is done in such a way as to contribute to that aim. There is a great deal of pain every day, but it is endured without complaint. Only that level of passion and commitment can earn the gold." Thank you for setting yourself apart to represent our country at the Olympics. A top ten performance and a 2:08 on that terrifying course in the heat and humidity are amazing! Rich blessings to you and your family!
