Super 55 Drum Smoker - Detailed Build

Guys, this Super 55 Drum Smoker Project has been SO FUN for me to work on. Full disclosure, this video was shot back in 2023 and I'm just now getting to post it. Mostly because I wanted to make sure I actually loved the Super 55 fist, but in reality, I've been busy with my full-time job/hobby of RC.
Anyway, you guys are going to notice this is a long video, but I think it is the only video out there of a full proper assembly and prep of the Super 55 Drum Smoker. Enjoy! Perfect for a fun weekend with yourself or your kids to build this.
I will post the final video soon! If you've never enjoyed the beauty of a drum smoker, now is the time. Not only are they fun to make, they are super versitile and frankly incredibly portable. Love the flavor and speed you can get out of one of these cookers. Its no wonder they are becoming super popular on the comp circuits.

    Thank you for this. After about 10 minutes my 800 series grill would stop working after getting to the desired cook temperature. I did your under grill wiring setup and everything worked fine. I didn’t think it was the fan with mine since it heats up pretty quick. I ordered a replacement fan also from amazon just incase as it seems those go out too. I’ve had mine for 2.5 years and this was first issue I’ve had with it.

    Nice! I tried my first yesterday, but way different: No beans, several different fresh peppers, green enchilada sauce, beef broth, tomato, onion, beef and chorizo loaf heavily seasoned over the top, not following a recipe. Excellent. My point being chili is so adaptable to taste. But even if not really a chili fan, smoking the meat over the base could change your mind.

    Look at 6:15 in the video. There is a hickory chip caught between the auger and the opening of the pellet tube. That is what is causing those "awful" sounds. There is too much clearance between the auger and the pellet tube. I'm certain the amps to that auger motor were spiking! Still, other than that, it's not too damaging. Especially if you plan to replace your pellet grill before ~500 to 1000 cooks. Now this might sound counter intuitive, what you need in your situation is no chips that are small enough to get trapped between the auger and tube yet are still small enough to fit between the auger "blades" and none that are wedge shaped. If you sort those chips through hardware cloth for size and then sort out those that are wedge shaped, this will work. Frankly, if I were going to do this, I'd just hand split larger chunks. That way you can sort for size shape at the same time. However, I'd just use one of those smoker tubes. I don't have the time to hand sort wood chunks. That's why we use pellet grills instead of an offset smoker!

    12V external power is not needed to get 100% fan speed. 5V external is enough to run at 100%. I rarely run above 60% on my 1050, so an external battery may not even be necessary with the GS

    • @Smokingmeatsbbq
      @Smokingmeatsbbq 2 місяці тому

      After testing, you are correct. I'm not sure where I read that at the time, but it appears 5V does work fine. I will say having 100% fan speed makes for a much quicker start up.

    Wow your lucky over a year had to replace my controller twice, 2 of the door switches failed, and the worst, one of the wires for the temperature sensor came off the worst plug ever made, the connection to the plug with a 4-40 nut and the controller somehow still worked and ran the grill full blast until I came and saw the paint melting off the back of the grill. Don't buy Masterbuilt it's dangerous.
