Porsche 912- Some side project now complete!
Workshop Archive #14
I have been on and off in the shop doing some smaller projects. Also waiting for a while to get these used CV joints in order to rebuild mine. The exhaust/muffler work was something i have been putting off but decided to go ahead and fix it.

    That exhaust is not US vs Euro or anywhere else, but it’s a 356 exhaust which is why the pipes are so far from each others. Euro - actually German and Swedish markets - 912 have a different set of pipes for the J tubes as the heat boxes are different and placement of the pipes are too.

    Great work. How did you maintain the torsion hole mounting point measurements it’s been a while since putting a pan in. I do recall the pans had a little play up down left right. Not having a bench Celette or car-o-liner you seemed to have aligned it fine I got to install one in mine. With no bench available

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 Місяць тому

      I was fortunate that the suspension controls could be bolted to the chassis. That location was not damaged so I figured if I just bolt the pan to the suspension that is being held in place on the chassis, that the pan would be suspended in the right spot. Thus, I could start bending and taking the car to the pan and be pretty confident that everything is in the right spot.

    Questions. #1 What pistons are you running and do you know what the piston angle dome is? #2 What was the deck height set at? #3 What was the static compression ratio? IMHO, I would send out the heads to get chamfered to the corresponding angle of the piston, that way you have a better quench.

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 2 місяці тому

      The piston are original I didn’t split the case and change them from factory. Unfortunately I don’t know the angle. The heads are brand new with valves and springs. And the seats were cut with the proper angles. I just had to shim them. I have to still run a compression test when I bring the engine outside to test start it.

    good stuff man! gonna start tackling some suspension stuff for my 77 911. I think I read somewhere that the inner splines on the torsion bar account for like 3 degrees and the outer splines at the spring plate account for like 1 degree or something like that..a fine dance to find the right numbers but glad you got it!

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 2 місяці тому

      Yeah I believe you are correct, i spent around 10 min just finessing it to get to around 33 degrees. Good luck with your build.

    Nothing beats fresh heads… I didn’t know AA performance made 912 heads. That is great to know…. What is that groove in the pump cover? Is that worn into it from a cooling tin?

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 2 місяці тому

      Yeah my local machine shop told me about them and gave them a shot based on the cost. The valve springs need to be shimmed though, they don’t come built in. Are you talking about that circle groove seen before putting the cover on? There is a tin piece that covers half the cover that goes under the crank pulley that I didn’t install in the video yet.

    • @markhoul6909
      @markhoul6909 2 місяці тому

      @@ilias8010 yes, that groove on mine is almost all the way through the cover. I wasn’t sure if this was a groove worn in with time, or there from the factory

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 2 місяці тому

      It looked like to me something that was from the factory when they casted the case. There only thing that moves are the gears, nothing on the out side that would “cut” that groove.

    Nice and very satisfying I can imagine. But, hold on, is your oil drain plug screw on upside down? Hex on inside of motor?

      @ilias8010 2 місяці тому

    I assume you realise, but your soft window Targa is a very rare car. With a high quality restoration it would be quite valuable. It's great that you're doing it up, but the finishes and techniques you're using (such as black paint on parts that should be raw aluminium or zinc plated) are not the best option for a car this rare.

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 2 місяці тому

      I agree with you, I’m trying to do the best I can with my budget. I can’t get the car into concourse condition, really I’m trying to get it on the road and build it for my self.

  • @steveporritt1550
    @steveporritt1550 3 місяці тому

    Good work but I believe you might regret reusing the seal. I'd also advise using a brass drift when knocking out the bearing race, as it's unlikely to do any damage to the bearing housing if you hit it.

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 3 місяці тому

      The seal it self looked good. Someone else gave me a tip to take that spring that’s in the seal and cut a piece of it off and reconnect it. Giving it a tight fit for the seal. Time will tell if I’m wrong

    • @steveporritt1550
      @steveporritt1550 3 місяці тому

      @@ilias8010 Hi, I hope you're lucky, as it looks a lot of work to replace a seal costing a few bucks. If the seal is too tight it can eventually ruin the sealing surface, which then requires a sleeve or spray metalling & re machining. Porsche use good quality materials in general, so you probably won't have that problem, as long as the seal remains intact, but once it starts to wear, fine grit can get stuck and quite rapidly wear the surface, where the lip meets. Anyway keep up the good work, it looks like you have a lot of bodywork to do. I thought MGB's rusted badly but there are a lot of early 911/912's on UA-cam with serious rust problems. At least with an MGB, mini, TR6 if it gets too bad you can reshell the car.

    • @ilias8010
      @ilias8010 3 місяці тому

      Thank you for the advice I appreciate it. Yeah the body work it’s self is a whole other level of the build. For now I just want to get it on the road and driving before I can think about body and paint.

    I think you might have invested the rear position light and turn signal bulbs. The turn signal should be the outer lights and the position lights is closer to the license plate. Those should be the dual spade light holders that do position lights and brake lights as well. The reverse light is actuated by a pin in the transmission, and you should be able to check them by connecting the two wires that go to that switch

  • @matlecomte
    @matlecomte 7 місяців тому

    You may want to upgrade to a dual master cylinder which was standard from 68 onward, it gives redundancy in case something happens to the brake lines. The lines in the front are slightly different and you need a pedal cluster with a different plunger to the MC and a switch to the side.

    I am enjoying your channel, just curious why a 124? any history on that? I've had three and still have one, I just knew from the first time I saw one that I had to have one, the styling had me at first site. The rest of the car was icing on the cake. So I got the 124 as a barn find when I was around 16 and I tried to fix it up over many years ( whenever I made a few extra dollars). Since I got the 912 I have been ignoring the fiat unfortunately. But I like to use it during the warmer months so I needed to fix the head gasket issue. I also find it a very good looking car but can be difficult to fix at times lol.
