If a retailer accepts PayPal for payment in-store, then you can pay with PayPal to earn the 5% back in-store! It’s just more common for PayPal to be accepted for online orders rather than in-person ones.

That can be tricky for sure! To be honest, not a whole lot of places accept it in-store. From what I can see, retailers like Best Buy and CVS are some of the more common places that accept it in-store (some people have complained about partial payment issues with using it at CVS though). You'll be able to make online purchases for delivery orders, or even for store pick up, with way more retailers (such as Walmart and Target). It's also good to be aware of the policies for returning items and purchase protection as well (Paypal is generally best used to buy items you don't plan on returning and that will eventually be used up, like household items and groceries). The quarterly activation can definitely be annoying! The Citi Custom Cash card is a great alternative to consider - you'll earn 5% back automatically on your highest eligible spend category (with no annual fee as well).

My question is if I add money to it just before I get my interest added will it make a difference or will I see the increase next month when the money is added ?
With the Amex HYSA, your interest compounds daily and is deposited in your account monthly, and you'll be earning interest on that increased balance as soon as the transfer hits your Amex account. As far as seeing the increase in your interest earnings on your account, I looked at my own account statement and it shows the interest is paid out for the full month up to and including that very day (though I'm not sure if there's a time cut off for the statement day). For example, if your statement period ends on the 15th of every month, and your transfer is credited to your Amex account before the interest is credited to your account for that past month on the 15th, I believe you should see it included within that statement. Even if it's not included that same day though, that interest is still compounding daily, so it'll still be included in your balance on the 16th, and you'll definitely see the increase on the following statement date. I replied to your question from the other video, but Walmart Supercenters do not officially fall under either of those categories (Walmart Neighborhood Market locations should code as 5% though, since they're official 'grocery stores'). Some people *have* reported that their AAA Daily Advantage card codes certain Walmart Supercenter locations under the 'grocery store' category for 5% back (in addition to Walmart Neighborhood Market grocery stores coding as 5%), but it's in no way guaranteed it'll code for the 5%, so if you're mainly applying for the card to use at Walmart Supercenters, you're taking a pretty big chance, as you won't know for sure if it earns 5% back at your own local Walmart in South FL until after you apply for the card and start using it (and the coding could also change at any time in the future as well). Another card to consider for possibly earning 5% back at Walmart is with AAA. That's right, funding the account with $50 is totally fine! Both Amex and Discover are offering 4.25% APY at the moment, which is still a really solid rate (the rate will fluctuate along with the market)

You can just do the high yield savings if you want! If you do open a checking account, you can also get a debit card as well. I just opened the savings account, and it's worked well so far with just transferring funds online between my brick and mortar bank account and the online savings account. Hope that helps!

To me, the Advantage Plus Banking is an excellent traditional checking account and it's perfect for me since I have direct deposit of more than $250.00 and I don't keep a balance at all (well, I do keep a little balance 😆), so these fee waivers are a real treat. I rarely write checks, but I use my MasterCard debit card a lot for transactions.

That's a good point - this account is an even better option if you get their debit card from opening their checking account for sure! I just have the high yield savings account personally (so I don't have a debit card), but it's still easy enough to transfer to another brick and mortar bank as well to deposit/withdraw cash
What if I don’t activate the 5% in certain stores? Is there a deadline? How do I activate it?
For the Chase Freedom Flex and the Discover It Cash Back cards, you’ll have to activate the quarterly offer for each card within each bank’s app in order to earn the 5% cash back, and their cash back calendars are constantly changing as their categories rotate every quarter, so you can only earn the 5% back at Walmart or Target if it’s being featured that quarter. For example, Discover is currently featuring Walmart in Q3 this year. Chase has a deadline towards the end of the quarter, so you can earn cash back retroactively, while for Discover you’ll need to activate the offer before you can earn the cash back. For the US Bank Shopper Cash Rewards card, you can earn the 6% cash back on two stores of your choice, but you have to manually select your categories on their app each quarter, and they do have a deadline each quarter, so once that deadline passes, you can’t edit your categories for the rest of that quarter. For any of these cards, there is usually a section under the credit card in their app that shows something along the lines of ‘cash back calendar’, ‘activate quarterly offer’, or 'select categories', so you can click through and make sure you click the activate button or successfully submit your categories of choice. If you don’t activate the quarterly cash back offer for the Chase and Discover cards, or you don’t manually select your categories for the US Bank card, then you won’t earn the high cash back rate - you’ll just earn the base rate, which is 1% back for Chase/Discover and 1.5% back for US bank. Why did Amex drop down the rate. I seen it at 4.35 one time then 4.25. I still have Amex Savings lower the amount I'm putting in and went with Wealthfront they are still at 5.00. I have both have more in Wealthfront now then Amex
The APY for high yield savings accounts is variable, so it’ll change along with the market. The Fed has lowered the rates a few times over the last few months, so that’s why rates are a bit lower across most high yield savings accounts than the were last year. Wealthfront is definitely a great option as well! CDs are also a good option right now, since it’s expected rates will drop quite a hit over the next year or two, so you could lock in that higher rate for a fixed term, like a year or two.

Just opened mine, because I already have CC with them, I figure might as well to have HYSA, instead opening an entirely different account with different bank, I am aware different bank have more yield but like 4.6% or even 5%, but I will have new card, app, system, UI, which quite a hassle

I too have an AMEX HYSA and am very pleased with the earnings to date. I particularly like that there’s no requirement for direct deposit. I’d rather do it myself every 2 weeks.

I have one through product change and the other through a signup which is 2 citi custom cashes. I also have the Discover It Cash Back and the Freedom Flex product changed from a Freedom Unlimited.

Agreed, I don't expect they'll be changing their main $200 bonus on a spend of $500 for CFF anytime soon. This video was highlighting their limited time offer that stacked on top of that $200 bonus (for 5% back on gas and at grocery stores for your first year with the card, on up to $12k spent for that year). Hopefully they'll bring that extra offer back later this year!

I do not suggest that anybody gets the reloadable card. You have to download a separate app, customer service isn’t informed fully on how to help, you also do not get this information without having to research to a degree. A messy/unreliable card. Just do debit or credit
That's good to know - thanks for sharing! Many people have also reported getting very low credit limits for the credit card, so the debit card might be a better option
