That's right, funding the account with $50 is totally fine! Both Amex and Discover are offering 4.25% APY at the moment, which is still a really solid rate (the rate will fluctuate along with the market)
You can just do the high yield savings if you want! If you do open a checking account, you can also get a debit card as well. I just opened the savings account, and it's worked well so far with just transferring funds online between my brick and mortar bank account and the online savings account. Hope that helps!
