  • Here's a little bit of Uncle Pen which is getting me psyched to teach Intro to Bluegrass Mandolin: A Six Week Zoom Course with Michael Daves starting this coming Tuesday, March 7. The song was written by Bill Monroe in tribute to his fiddling uncle who mentored him in the melodies and bow shuffle timing of old-time square dance music. That's one of the three essential ingredients of bluegrass mandolin style that we'll be exploring in the course. The other two being vocal melody/ornamentation and the blues, the latter of which can be heard in Bill's break at the end of the video.
The class is appropriate for beginner and intermediate players - I can accommodate a pretty wide range of abilities and will assign a range of options to help meet each student's appropriate level of challenge. It runs from March 7 - April 11, meeting Tuesday nights from 7:45-9:15pm. The class is limited to 10 students and the fee is $225. You may reserve a spot with a $50 deposit - please see the link for full info, and DM with any questions.

The days of solid family tradition and fellowship are strongly recalled in that song, it is an emotional jolt to compare to our world today to that one long gone; we are all much worse for all our technology and advances.
Excellent teaching tool and nicely done.
