Building our own market tent from canvas, white oak, and steel
We could've easily ordered a pop-up tent online, to be conveniently delivered to our door, but no. We put ourselves through the pain and misery of building our own tent from scratch, where the only plastic to be found is the thread in the canvas. See the process from start to finish: forging curled nuts, tapping screws, sawing white oak boards, sewing the canvas, assembly, and its first appearance at our first market selling our ironwork and herbs.

Weight-lifting with line shaft equipment
Переглядів 674 місяці тому
Dreams of a line shaft-driven workshop have been thwarted by our current shop's low ceilings, so the historic pulleys and shafts now serve as the weight-lifting equipment we've always wanted but never had the space for. Just add a few workhorses. What better use of extraordinarily heavy cast iron while it gathers dust awaiting their move to the next workshop?

Follow along here with the months-long process of restoring this 1910-era Dupont (Fairbanks) model C power hammer. This hammer was purchased from a blacksmith closing up shop in Delaware and hauled back to North Carolina on a 16-foot trailer. Once I got it home, it had to sit on the trailer for a month while I constructed the gantry crane, seen at the start of the video. The crane is made of re...
Antique drill press restoration EXTENDED EDIT
Переглядів 1,8 тис.10 місяців тому
Here's an extended edit showing more of the extensive restoration of a W.F & J. Barnes 20-inch drill press that was manufactured in 1910, from a time when form and function were equally important. Unlike many camelback drills from the time period, this one features back gears internal to the upper cone pulley and a worm gear auto-feed. Currently, the drill press is powered from a floor-mounted ...
Antique bandsaw restoration EXTENDED EDIT
Переглядів 1,3 тис.10 місяців тому
Here's an extended edit showing more of the extensive restoration of a 27-inch, 980lb, ~1910, American Sawmill Company bandsaw. It had been sitting unused in a nearby blacksmith shop since 1981 and required brazing repairs to the upper wheel sleeve bearing, as well as new guards. We use it to process small lumber, make handle blanks, and cut curves. The bandsaw is currently powered by a two hor...
Antique forge blower restoration
Переглядів 87610 місяців тому
This is a pre-1900 forge blower, likely manufactured somewhere between 1870 and 1890. It predates the more modern geared hand crank blowers. The restoration began straightforwardly but became more interesting once I realized that all of the shafts needed to be remade on the metal lathe due to their excessive wear. I don't have a great location to permanently install it in this workshop, but I p...
Our first festival
Переглядів 12310 місяців тому
Back in June, we sold ironwork and herbs together at our first festival at Rassawek Vineyards up in Virginia. Bradley demonstrated making a fireplace crane with friends and fellow smiths Roger and Wesley. We learned a ton about what people do and do not want to buy at festivals and look forward to refining our approach for the next one.
Antique metal lathe restoration
Переглядів 3,2 тис.10 місяців тому
The workshop is now home to a new (old) metal lathe. This model of lathe is a 9-inch South Bend from 1926. It sat unused for many years and needed a complete overhaul to be operational again. Luckily no components were broken or badly worn so the restoration was a straightforward one. It even came with the original countershaft. Since we are progressing towards building a line shaft-powered sho...

Is there any heat treatment of the tines that you recommend or were they OK without bending as they were built? Thanks.
Who needs a gym, when you have a farm instead
If you need to clean up rusted machined surfaces, use scotchbrite padd.
Nice work guys!
This is a wonderful way to film this work. Can hear all the sounds that come with it. No overly loud music playing. No 'youtube' entertainer commentary. Keep up this fantastic work.
I like the idea. Well done! First like, comment, and shared.
thats a amazing restoration ! it looked like it was even more work getting it into the shop haha i know the struggles of doing that :P got a one tone 1920 lathe in a small little garage , keep up the good work cant wait for more videos , post some soon !
That hammer is bad ass. Where's the free beer and pizza?!?😂
I like to imagine that this machine was actually very light and that Bradley and co did an excellent pantomime that it was heavy.
You got me. Its well disgusted Styrofoam.
Nice machine, i just did not understand what are these two external gears for? Both a connected simultaneously to the main spindle? Can someone explain me the function please?
Fantastic video. Great bench without $100,000 or more in machinery. Not pristine lumber but lumber that gets the job done. Thank you.
cool 👍
i have the exact same drill ! its a amazing piece of machinery . i haven't restored mine just yet but its coming up soon on the list :) . as always you did a fantastic job , keep up the good work !
I so wish we still made stuff like this. The artisans who made this would be tickled pink to see you restore it!
Stunning work!
thats a nice band saw . been looking for one like that for my shop for a while , nice job
Well done. Nice restoration and would have loved a longer format version of the video. I have a very similar Crescent bandsaw that works well enough but needs some TLC
Beautiful work sir. Awesome set of machines you building. Does the paint you used have any sort of rust conversion or self-etching quality? Completely freeing such large cast parts would be a huge undertaking, so just interested in your process. Thanks! Happy Forging
Good question. This paint is nothing special. Its simple oil based rustoleum paint. I have used fancier paint with etching qualities as well as primers and rust converters. I have found that this rustoleum paint is the easiest to apply with a brush and looks the most similar to the original japanning that was on machines from this time period. Its also a cheaper option than something like por-15. Its held up well for several years on some of the earlier work.
Nice job on the lathe. I love the old machines. In the future, I would like to hear commentary from you in your videos, to hear your thoughts and ideas.
Thanks for the feedback. I will consider this. Its more work to add commentary, and a lot of this work is done ad hoc.
That wasnt a restoration that was a cleanup and paint job lol. No way in hell you'll be machining any precise parts with that.
Do it right with some updating and those old machines are beasts.....back when they made high quality cast iron frames....the illegal EPA has removed that possibility now. Improve bearings...tighten all tolerances grind the ways , new close tolerance lead screws etc. Other than not having the ability to cut metric threads easily these old machines can be better than new ....If done correctly.
Cutting metric threads on a lathe with an imperial lead screw is quite easy, actually. I did a restoration of an old Torsa lathe a few years ago. Oddly enough this German made lathe comes with an imperial lead screw. No problem to cut metric threads with a 127 tooth gear in the change gear train. Using a thread dial is not possible though. (Well, in theory it would be possible with a very complex one.)
Gotta love the old stuff, built with pride to last a lifetime. Thanks for sharing Cheers
Nice clean up.
South Bend used the same castings for decades.. Served my apprenticeship on my dads model A.. nice lathe you got there.. from the Ole Line Shaft Era
thats a beutafle lathe , nice to see shes still up and running making parts :)
Hello there. How did you exactly weld the cast iron parts back up? I bought an old drill press today but it has a small crack that i would like to repair. Thanks in avance. Friendly greetings.
It’s a method called brazing, similar to welding except more difficult and it uses bronze to fill the cracks. It’s very difficult to weld iron castings on old machines like this, so they are typically brazed instead.
I like the three over one window...as the painting went from primer to ....Pacific Blue?....that window really stood out for me. Great job everybody!
.....Can we start with dessert?..........May we start with dessert?
Shazam! That was work work & work! Well done congratulations! The drill looks fantastic!
Witam. Masz piękny warsztat i cudowne narzędzia 👍🙋♂️
Love it may I have measurement
When first unpacking the thin metal was problematic ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh The design once it’s together feels solid. I purchased to build a greenhouse. I definitely recommend for the price.
I have this beautiful piece of burl in my front yard im sure it would make beautiful tool handles and such its a little hard to cut but yall seem to have it figured out ❤
I like chicken
This is SICK ❤
Youre going to have to let me in on your audio video set up. And how you handle audio in post. The tools have a crisp sound to them with minimal to no background noise, how do you do that?
Nice
I’d want to live there if I was a chicken. Nice blacksmith work too but I think the star of the show was the white chicken she’s so cool and rocks those feathers on top

Just found your channel and subbed! Definitely my style of work and your videography and editing skills are something out of this world!👍 I may have to copy some of your techniques for my fledgeling channel, l o l.👐

Tools that could have been his grandfather’s. And eventually could be his grandson’s. Cannot get tools like that any more.
I've seen dozens of videos of people building a workbench. What always annoys me there is that it's always the finest wood, the finest tools, the most precise surfaces. But what makes a really good workbench? The mass that keeps it in place. The diverse clamping options. Enough space to work. Let it age gracefully. It should show what we have achieved together. The most impressive thing about your video: You used wood that others would have put in the stove. You gave back this wood to dignity. Thank you for sharing your excellent work with us and greetings from the southwest of Germany
Work benches of old would have been made with whatever was available. They were for doing as they were called - work. Not to be a show piece. And I guess with the work involved with cutting trees into usable timber, best wood would have been for the products, so they would not have used best timber anyway.
Thank you!
How long was that wood outside aging? I like the spalting and the worm patterns. Nice and heavy workbench too!
These trees were dead when felled. So hard to know how long they were dead. Probably a couple years.
Старинные станки изумительны!
I'm planning to build my 2nd bench. I noticed that your space under the top is empty without even a shelf. My question is do you ever experience racking or movement when you are planing or working on heavy object on top? I'm leaning toward an integrated drawer system or possibly bracing underneath.
The design of the through tenon's into the top of the bench as well as the interlocking legs prevents any racking. I haven't had issues. I decided to leave the bottom without a shelf since it just gets covered with shavings anyway and it's a good place to keep excessive shavings. If you go with a shelf I would minimize the gaps on the top of the bench.
The joints are oriented to resist in the directions they will experience. Plus the shear mass of it.
What will you build to bring to market ?
I am planning to primarily sell forged iron items with possible wood elements.
Very atmospheric! Thanks for the inspirational video!
Wow! Really nice video 😎
beautiful work
