I've seen dozens of videos of people building a workbench. What always annoys me there is that it's always the finest wood, the finest tools, the most precise surfaces. But what makes a really good workbench? The mass that keeps it in place. The diverse clamping options. Enough space to work. Let it age gracefully. It should show what we have achieved together. The most impressive thing about your video: You used wood that others would have put in the stove. You gave back this wood to dignity. Thank you for sharing your excellent work with us and greetings from the southwest of Germany
Work benches of old would have been made with whatever was available. They were for doing as they were called - work. Not to be a show piece. And I guess with the work involved with cutting trees into usable timber, best wood would have been for the products, so they would not have used best timber anyway.
So glad it didn't crush the Mrs when lowering it down. Could've kinda put a damper on things. Love the old way of making things. Quieter. Less dust. Pensive time. Well-earned skill.
I have this beautiful piece of burl in my front yard im sure it would make beautiful tool handles and such its a little hard to cut but yall seem to have it figured out ❤
Well done! Really like the mobile drill press at 4:06. Cool! I'm in my 40's and i've seen SOME old tools through the years but nothing like that, just variants of "regular" big ones. Nice. Gives me ideas... 🤔
@@MadebyKourmoulis, Yes my first thought also but I never seen anything like it until now. Cool gadget. I want one. 😁The drill used @ 1:40 is the type I've seen most of the times in "the real world".
Absolutely excellent build , that will be handed down father to son . Still got all the tools which my grandfather handed down to me , doubt I’m strong enough to use them properly at my ripe old age of 61 after 45yrs in the trade .
Holy mackerel, that is one gorgeous workbench. I particularly like that the timber already has a story to tell with all those checks and wormholes :) The editing was great, too - loved the shot of the two of you struggling to lower the assemled bench. Enjoy the finished Roubo, I am sure it will give you lots of joy.
Also came here to say that I loved the moment of seeing the young couple struggle together to lower the bench. Reminds me of all the times my wife and I wrestled furniture in and out of tiny apartments. Seeing it from this perspective made me appreciate the beauty having a good partner.
Un trabajo absolutamente increíble. Mis felicitaciones y muchísimas gracias por compartirlo. Por fin , alguien nuevo y con verdadero talento para seguir. Estaré pendiente a tu próximo video.👍💪🔨 🗜⚒️
Congratulations! Very nice work. I am building a similar workbench with old oak beams, your video helps me to better plan the next steps. Please keep posting videos!
Congrats on the successful workbench build, that's what you call a solid bit of kit and it's definitely been built to last your lifetime a.d probably a couple more lifetime's. As alway's guy's 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
Привет из России. Отличная работа. Четыре года назад я видел создание такого верстака .Ваш гораздо массивнее. На века построено. Удачи во всех Ваших начинаниях. Подписался. Жду продолжения.
I like the way you cut the dovetails...I'm building my first bench too and it's interesting to see you using an acme threaded rod and I wood block for the tail vise...imactually doing the same thing...beside I don't exactly have $400 for a BC vise eventho they make I beautiful vise...I do also like to have food!...you did an awesome job...its going to be a pleasure for you to use suck a beautiful bench!!!
The spalting is gorgeous. I skipped around, so I hope I’m not saying something already covered, but I like that the top is more blank, but the vertical pieces are what have the most character. Oh yeah, and the craftsmanship is pretty good too I guess… 😉 First video of yours I’ve seen, but it won’t be the last.
Couldn't guess the species...I have a live oak (I live in Florida) that fell on my property, and this stuff looks kinda like what you have. Enjoyed the video very much. You did a great job, especially using the old tools. Looking forward to your future vids. Take care of the bride, she's a keeper.
Just found your channel and subbed! Definitely my style of work and your videography and editing skills are something out of this world!👍 I may have to copy some of your techniques for my fledgeling channel, l o l.👐
This video came up in my feed today and really like it. Its a nice change of pace to all the power tool centric videos I usually watch. Is the workbench made of oak?
I'm planning to build my 2nd bench. I noticed that your space under the top is empty without even a shelf. My question is do you ever experience racking or movement when you are planing or working on heavy object on top? I'm leaning toward an integrated drawer system or possibly bracing underneath.
The design of the through tenon's into the top of the bench as well as the interlocking legs prevents any racking. I haven't had issues. I decided to leave the bottom without a shelf since it just gets covered with shavings anyway and it's a good place to keep excessive shavings. If you go with a shelf I would minimize the gaps on the top of the bench.

Fantastic video. Great bench without $100,000 or more in machinery. Not pristine lumber but lumber that gets the job done. Thank you.
Nicely done. 👍
enjoyed watching the two of you bring the bench down to the ground, haha
Wow! Really nice video 😎
Good looking work
Старинные станки изумительны!
Awesome work mate and loved the wee eyebrow raise at the standing Bench! Subscribed :)
Mr. Chickadee style video. Still love it . Bravo .
beautiful work

With simple equipment that doesn't mean you cant make a table that good,,good job
Very atmospheric! Thanks for the inspirational video!
A massive timber Roubo like ive never seen, mostly by hand with vintage hand tools. A great history lesson and inspiring example of handmade.
Just saw your channel for the first time...great job building your Roubo
sharing this amazing work to all my wood working buddies
nice work, great lumber, and perfect workshop.
I’ve watched hundreds of these bench build videos. This may be my favorite. Great work, my friend.
Well done!

The first version of the modern magdrill I think. (Or where they got the idea of the magdrill from!)
Timber framers use them alot.

Outstanding build. Good design. I built one similar out of southern yellow pine

Nice build! Just finished a roubo earlier this year. The process can get long in the tooth at times, but the results are worth it!
I like the realistics of not always having the perfect pieces of wood to work with, unless you're a huge job undertaker, that's the reality of it.
Absolutely. This wood was free for a reason. Workbenches don't have to look like fine furniture. They will get beat up anyway.
Yes buddy, that was nice to watch 👍
I liked the images as well, just the colorgrading was way to yellow. May have an eye on this next time.

How long was that wood outside aging? I like the spalting and the worm patterns. Nice and heavy workbench too!
These trees were dead when felled. So hard to know how long they were dead. Probably a couple years.
You're the hipster @Mrchickadee and I mean that in the best way possible.

It's made of ash. That had been dead for a while and recently cut down.
Risk losing a wife to get a new workbench, we've all been there.
You can chisel mortises on a Workbench, you can't on a wife.
Don't ask why I know
Hey I’m on my fourth wife they come and go. But a good work bench? That’s a whole other ball of wax.
@@gosonegr I can imagine, you probably wasted a nice piece of wood to find that out.
.... it's a beautiful workbench though. Sacrifices must be made.
Beautiful work man. Where is that vest youre wearing from?
It's a filson vest. Not cheap but solid vest.

The joints are oriented to resist in the directions they will experience. Plus the shear mass of it.
I did not know they had movie picture cameras to record this back then.
this is awesome! I am planning a Roubo style bench myself for the future...
Great job.
How long did it take you to finish this project?
The bench took about a month and a half of intermittent work. 2 months if you factor in the log processing.
Tools that could have been his grandfather’s. And eventually could be his grandson’s. Cannot get tools like that any more.
Natural shellac?
50/50 tung oil and citrus solvent for thinning.
Look for a frame saw. Ulmia or dictum.👍👍🇩🇪. Easier to work.😅😅
I do have a frame saw but it's very coarse. You are right I should make a smaller one.
What will you build to bring to market ?
I am planning to primarily sell forged iron items with possible wood elements.
Where’s the epoxy bro?
😂
Seriously good wood working porn there for all of us couch carpenters. Chapeaux!
That MF is a beast! Not a bench...
